I'm so glad you spotlighted Noli Me Tangere I feel the same about it being the best classic I've read this year. You're right that it's dense, and I took my time, but I read it while struggling through the unabridged Tale of Genji and was SO grateful for a traditional form of plot. really moving to consider in the context of Rizal's own life and death.
Just finished The Secrets of Hartwood Hall Late to the party I know but keen to read at this time of year Thoroughly enjoyed Katie A real page turner and great story Put me right into a perfect gothic space Many congratulations x
Being French I particularly appreciate listening to the audio book while I reading the book at the same time! For Our mutual friend I think the woman who reads it is just brilliant! She makes each character come alive! Meera Syal is great!
I haven't planned what I want to read in october, but I started Oliver Twist - I'm taking my time reading all the novels written by Charles Dickens, thanks to your enthusiasm 😁
I read Our Mutual Friend and absolutely loved it! 😊
Thank you Katie!
Once you finish Ayala's Angel, I'm certain you can understand why it would be an absolute favorite of some die-hard Trollope readers. It is a wonderful book with characters that to me at least seem to be the truest Trollope has written. And my gosh what an ending - sublime.
I’m happy that you enjoyed Noli Me Tangere. I wish I had known more of the history of my Lola’s home country. I hope Filipino literature is more recognized here on Booktube, because Philippines had it rough for centuries. I want to do a reread now that I have more background.
And then there were none is my favourite Agatha so far.. i need to read the mystery of Edwin drood
It's so cool that you read and enjoyed Hawkgirl. I really love comics and superheroes and in my mind classics and comics go so well together. These characters with such a wide universe and characters and backstories that have changed and adapted over time. Many of the characters are literally classic characters, invented in the 1940s or 60s and yet they are still involving and we can see the way each era has characterized the same character differently and it is a similar joy to reading a classic and entering history but also having the history of how people have read it throughout the decades.
One of the comics I really love is The Other History of the DC Universe by John Ridley, it has beautiful art and retells the stories of some of the first Black, Asian and Latina heroes, contextualized in the decade they first appeared. The writing is also just so good. Three years after reading it I still think of certain panels and lines.
I read Our Mutual Friend on your recommendation, thank you , loved it so much and found Eugene so amusing .
My nephew used to own a mountain of comic books/graphic novels but as he was moving city he no longer wanted them and I brought them all to Oxfam as they meant nothing to me. However he really entered into that world and maybe you might yet abandon Victorian land for Gotham.😂
You might want to read Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, considering why you liked Hawkgirl.
Be interesting to hear your thoughts on London Tide, the play based on Our Mutual Friend. Believe it’s streaming on National Theatre at Home shortly.
And There were None is an excellent murder mystery.
I think I know why the Trollope family added that final e, but I'm guessing.
Hello! So aside from Victober and Non-Fiction November, what at the other reading themes for the other months? I am new to this reading themed event!
Reverie
Tell me book, learned in the way
All the wisdom you hold
The words through your pages
Through the ages
Beacon of strength and mastery
Tell me book, what lesson for today
“I bear stories and accounts aplenty
Of travels and treasure trove
But on this day - look not for the pathway
For my pages give in to no words today
No quivering soul
No foresight nor philosophy
Behold the brittled find
Today I bring thee token from a fairy
A modest garden flower
Fragile but not weakly
Prized in my folds safely
Long ago, awaiting light of day
Press it now onto your heart securely
Let yesterday live anew today”

I have a question. Agatha Christie's portrayal of Egyptians is not nice...in fact, kinda racist. Would it be a minor part of a novel if a man wrote it?
