  • Police in Georgia fired teargas and rubber bullets at protesters demonstrating against a bill that would require organisations - including media and NGOs - that receive more than 20 percent of their funding from abroad to register as agents "pursuing the interests of a foreign power". The bill has been dubbed the "Russian law" by its detractors based on its similarity to legislation in place in Russia. "We will never be OK with this law," one demonstrator told FRANCE 24's Taline Oundjian. "I'm also afraid we will be isolated from the world outside, and especially from Europe."

This law requires all "foreign agents" to pass regular reports, which should be reviewed by the government and in case of any questions, a "foreign agent" can be fined (relatively huge fines) or banned. This is the point. It is an ultimate weapon to destroy all independent voices, as in undeveloped countries like Georgia, local business are usually very dependent on local authorities (official and most importantly unofficial) and legal system is weak.
Georgians are right. It is a slippery slope towards russia-like totalitarizm and lawlessness.

btw we protest in the afternoon so as to not interfere with everyday lives of people. these people work during the day like everyone else and protest from evening to maybe morning. it has been a tough 3 weeks almost and we honestly dont know if there is a peaceful end in sight. they are very brutally beating people up. doesnt matter young or old, male or female, they beat them up very hard. main opposition leader was beaten bloody when he was dragged in by the riot police. 10 people surrounded him and beat him up. he was hospitalized yesterday and had a broken nose and a very swollen eye (almost had permanent damage done to it). people like to chime in saying what about transparency when the main judges appointed by the russian dream resist and dont declare their income and property, when politicians themselves dont declare these things and they are excluding their daddy oligarch bidzina ivanishvili from this law. he can get the gazprom money he gets and he isnt a foreign agent :). thats how it is going to be enforced by liars and hypocrites who cry transparency and yet hide everything.

Crazy how "disclosing who pays your salary" is now considered an "attack on democracy". 🤡🇺🇸🇪🇺

Crazy how in Russia a law like this is used for hunting down companies and organisations and stamp them as terrorists against the state. 🤡 🤡 🤡

It has nothing to do with "disclosing who pays your salary". The Georgian Special Services know full well how NGOs are financed and who finances them. This information is available on the websites of those NGOs. The real reason of why they rushed this law through parliament is that they want to use it against the opposition during the upcoming election.

its to kill any opposition by smearing them as foreign agents as well as any opposition media. they excluded their oligarch leader of the party from this law btw. crazy how people who dont disclose anything themselves and their appointed judges are illegally resisting doing their income declarations arent gonna enforce that law on themselves or their allies. just the west and the opposition. CRAZY RIGHT?

@@adampgrm Are you saying that without that law, it would be impossible for the special services to obtain exhaustive information about those NGOs? Don`t make me laugh. The similar law was adopted in Russia back in 2012, then it was amended and modified several times according to their political agenda. Now, they`re using it to target political activists, media personalities and even poets, artists and journalists. Not so long ago, one of the Members of the Russian (parliament) Duma even proposed to adopt a new law, that will enable them to seize a person's property without their consent in case a person will openly criticize the government.
