The idea of Harvest Moon being so old that it's 'a game you've never heard of' fills me with an existential dread I can't properly articulate. I loved the SNES Harvest Moon.
My gf has never played Harvest Moon which is so sad to me because growing up I always thought the because it's so fun everyone must love it as much as I do! Turns out I do not know a single soul irl who actually knows about it lmao
I played Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town and Back to Nature in middle school and it’s still the greatest farming game I’ve ever played to this day. It has a charm that no other games can replicated. Everything in the game, the characters, the sceneries, the events, the dialogues are sooo charming!!
41:46 Also untrue. They did not split over creative differences. They split because Marvelous absorbed XSEED as a localiser and it was more cost-effective to localise in-house with them. (Not to mention the quality of their work was better.)
Grew up on harvest moon planning on it being a relaxing game, when in fact is awoke the treasure goblin in me at a very young age and every iteration I've played, yes even since the very first, has been me ignoring the townsfolk and raking in fat stacks of cash!

ModernGurlz and Harvest Moon was not in my bingo card lmao it's like my childhood i can still play it now and be the happiest woman ever i'm so glad u made a video about it
The way you detailed every marriage candidate at the beginning of the video with their personalities, quirks and roles and then proceeded to just list names at the end kinda highlights one of the problems the series has been facing outside the Natsume debacle or the Stardew comparison. Early HM games had you dealing with grief, loss, abuse, body dismorphia, the threat of losing everything, all of these edges have been sanded off by making these games squeaky clean and friendly, they can add all features in the world and it's still not gonna capture the heart of what the early games had.
The cool part is that Japan has so many more games that aspire to lack combat and be relaxing than just Story of Seasons and Animal Crossing (absolutely not a farming sim). From picture diaries to dating sims it's common design aspirations for games. Localisers almost always deemed those types of games unfitting for the fatality craving, chainsaw/gun hybrid obsessed english speaking gamers in the west. This is absolutely the thing I look forward to most in gaming, the slow creep of realisation that maybe there are some gamers that don't want to chainsaw a man's head off.
I would love to see more gaming videos from you, as you feel like making them! Nobody asked but Harvest Moon 64 remains my favorite of the titles I’ve played - I love how inter-connected the community is and the variety in festivities and events. It’s up there as my most replayed video game ever! Elli was my first HM love and I still have a soft-spot for her. My second was Cliff and I was so happy I could marry him in Mineral Town - even if he’s not ‘the same’ Cliff. My second favorite is probably A New Beginning. It added enough new features (for me - I missed the entire Wii and DS gen of HM) without being overwhelming. Soseki remains one of the hottest bachelors visually, although his ‘you’re such a baby’ act gets old. I wish we had more ‘grown up’ looking characters to wed. Oh well.
First of all, fantastic video. As someone who played the original harvest moon game, a lot growing up (thank you emulators) it was always so weird to me that very few people were familiar with harvest moon, even though it was such a well Knode franchise in Japan. But I always loved it. And this was a really great retrospective of the whole franchise, and I learn things I didn’t even know about it. Really great to see other people talking about it. Especially seeing as it was such an inspiration for Stardew Valley. Second, even though we love your channel for fashion analysis, it’s also super awesome to see you do things outside of your usual fair. It shows that you trust yourself as a creator, and assess your audience. I feel like we get to learn a little bit more about you when you do things outside of the usual. Not that we don’t still love the fashion videos, of course. But this was really cool .
This game changed my life at age 10-11. I learned to grow crops here and then i did it in reality. I grew a handlful of of vegetables and then took in on my bicycle across few hills and dropped it off at the big supermarket that had a truck that leaves to the main city in the country. They paid me a few cents..but at that age it was a magical achievement. I am in my 30s now, a businessman. This game will be in my heart always.
I always get frustrated when people act like Stardew Valley innovated farming sims + rpg elements when Rune Factory actually did it first (and better imo). It especially irks me when ignorant people say Harvest Moon/Story Of Seasons and Rune Factory COPIED Stardew when it's the other way around 😡
Back then on RUclips no one really made ANY harvest moon content. I’d watch the same videos over and over for nostalgia. I’m so happy to see endless harvest moon content now.
what do you mean never heard of?? it's a huge franchise that inspired other similar games, like Stardew Valley. me and all my friends had it on gamecube, ds, wii, etc. i'm so confused by this title lol
You mentioned that Harvest Moon GBC 2 added the Greenhouse feature to the game, but it was first introduced in Harvest Moon 64. (I would know, I spent the better part of last year trying to get a full photo album in that game, and you need to build the Greenhouse in order to get one of the photos.) Harvest Moon 64 is such a fun game, I really love how it had rival marriages and the photo album. Completing the album is one of the proudest gaming moments I've had in my whole life. If I shipped more items I would have gotten the perfect ending, but I managed to get all of the other achievements, which made me super happy.~ I always used to play HM64 back in elementary school after being introduced to the game at a friend's 7th birthday party. We were so hopelessly lost in Flowerbud Village the first time we played the game, but I was so enamored by the amazing world inside of that game cartridge. It may have taken me the better part of these past few decades to finally fill up my photo album, but it didn't make it any less special when it finally happened! ❤
I have always wanted to hear your thoughts on the outfits in Scream queens, going over the characters and why they dress they do. Would be great since spooky season is starting!
A video about HARVEST MOON by ModernGurlz??!!! I would never have expected it but this was a pleasant surprise I LOVED harvest moon AND this channel is one I enjoy tuning into omg
The snes version had a cheat of a sort - endless night. This meant that you could clear the fields in one day (for restoring energy, you went to the bar).
My first Harvest Moon game was Harvest Moon DS and ever since I've gone down a rabbit hole of cozy farming games, but nothing really beats nostalgia. Even though I love Stardew Valley, the fact time doesn't really have a huge impact and your children don't grow up is something I missed from the Harvest Moon games. Not to mention, all the random secrets you get for staying up late (e.g. there's this game where you can make all the love interests battle if you interact with the dog house at an exact time), or putting a lvl 999 poison mushroom in the soup and instantly ending the game. Awesome video! Thank you!
Harvest Moon: Back to Nature was my childhood. ConcernedApe did an excellent good job with Stardew Valley to satisfy my need of a rewarding farming-simulator but HM will always have a special place in my heart. I would still hum the fall theme from HMBTN once in a while.
I feel like I love each graphic style for different reasons…. Each is iconic to me in its own way. From mineral town, to DS, to AWL, tree of tranquility, and magical melody, each one holds a special place in my heart. They weren’t all perfect games, and they usually have something to improve or could’ve added- but they all bring me right back to incredibly positive childhood memories… Love harvest moon/story of seasons! Also love the animal crossing series, harvest moon/story of seasons and animal crossing have holds on me…
Honestly the narrator here was right, if they put all the Harvest Moon / Story of Seasons games together (If we can dream about the cold war ending between the developers/producers) into a Stardew Valley-like game; with every bachelor/bachelorette, all of the well received game mechanics as well as either 2d or 3d, all put together in one single game, it may be able to gain more traction and popularity. Also I would absolutely play a game where I'd break my brain trying to guess which of the many many bachelorettes/bachelors I would have to choose.
I'm probably one of the few people who actually played OG harvest moon back when it first came out and was obsessed with it. It was such a unique game compared to everything else back then. I didn't know anyone else who liked the game. I'd like to see different settings and themes explored in the future. Something like harvest moon meets recettear in a magic fantasy setting where you're a witch who brews potions and makes magic trinkets out of things you grow and collect and then can sell those things out of your own shop where npcs will come to buy stuff.
Oh my God I love this game series!! For the longest time I thought I was the only weirdo who played these sorts of games, 15 years ago Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing weren't a thing. To build a place you love, share life with someone, even caring for your animals and crops, sounds so grown up but even at 10 years old it was something I looked forward to so much! Thank you for this video
Friends of Mineral Town will always be in my heart, but I converted over to the Rune Factory series, since it also got the fantasy / monster hunting element and interesting, connected storyline. The neat thing is: I can decide what I want to do without switching games. If I want to get cozy, I'll farm and socialize. If I want to explore, I'll explore. And if I want to hunt, well, I'll hunt. It's great. I also wanted to give Stardew Valley a shot, but my Laptop is sadly too weak for it.
I never knew about the early 2d harvest moons. Their design is so appealing- i love the fence jumping! I need to find a video essay that properly explains the appeal of tile-based games. It’s not just nostalgia, there’s something really satisfying about it.
I spent so much time playing Harvest Moon DS. Never got to free all the lutins, tho. I love the storyline and the art style. I they decide to re-release it without bugs, I would buy it in a heart beat ! Lumina, Luffy, you are still in my heart
AHHH I love this! 💕🌳👩🏽🌾🌾 I grew up playing HM on the GameCube and DS and it has always been one of my favorites! I feel like no one ever talks about it and how it impacted sim type games so thank you 🙏🏻 the art style really inspired me as an artist as well 🌻🌷🌱🪻🌹 What's everyone's favorite HM/SoS game?
You forgot one thing for Stardew Valley. The modding community is fantastic on PC and there is a mod called Welcome to Mineral Town. This is almost the entirety of Mineral Town, bachelors, stories, crops. You can experience a Harvest Moon game INSIDE Stardew Valley. It is WILD.
Story of Seasons: Trio of Towns is my absolute favorite. I'm so thankful for Marvelous. Can't wait to see what they do next and I'm excited for the new Stardew update coming soon! Happy farming everyone!🥰🥰
I would love to see more videos like this of games or different type of media you liked. I love Stardew Valley but never played Harvest Moon and hearing about how it influenced the game in a more deep-dive-way rather than just ”the Stardew Valley dev was inspired by Harvest Moon” was really interesting to watch
This is the first Im hearing of tree of tranquility not being good 😅 it was my childhood game and I spent YEARS playing it every week with my grandpa. I replayed it at the beginning of the pandemic and loved it all the same, but it was probably nostalgia goggles. I haven’t been able to find any game that makes me as happy and fulfilled as the wii harvest moon games, and I think the slow pacing helps me feel less rushed and more relaxed while playing
I have such a soft spot for Harvest Moon: More Friends of Mineral Town! What a nice surprise to see a deep dive into the franchise including its rise, fall, and rebirth.
I remember borrowing my friends gba just so I can play More friends in Mineral Town. She always married Rick and I always married Gray. Another spiritual successor to Harvest Moon besides Stardew Valley is Coral Island.
I first got in touch with the franchise because my 20-year-old mom looked for the most downloaded DS games at the moment and gifted me Harvest Moon usando of happiness, i spent hours of gameplay its genuinely one of my most treasured memories
Wasn't expecting an HM video from this channel but the way I clicked so fast! Honestly it's a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" type of franchise for me. Even if they just do the same thing with a new gimmick, over and over again, I'll gobble it up each time. They just have to do it well. And that's kinda the problem, because the recent games have had really shallow stories and characters. That includes the FoM and AWL remakes because no amount of QoL improvements can make up for the repetitive dialogue and gameplay. In my opinion, Trio of Towns and Rune Factory 4 are the peak of their respective series. Every character is endearing, every romance is butterfly-inducing, the daily dialogue changes constantly, and there's just a sheer GIRTH of events and things to do. Their only weaknesses are lack of inclusivity and relatively weak child/family systems. For the latter, A Wonderful Life and Animal Parade are more of the exceptions than the rule. It's really impressive to watch your child grow into their own person and to have a hand in it, but AWL is too slow-paced for me to ever see it through. For me, Animal Parade holds the crown in that category. Two unique children you can dress-up, walk around town, and they befriend the rival children. Adorable! (Also if you wear a ten gallon hat around Calvin, he'll blush and say "you look radiant" which is hilarious. You, your kids, and your water balloon-headed husband can all wear matching ten gallon hats, best game ever). Related point but I really miss rival marriages! Apparently that system got scrapped because players didn't like the competition, but I think it made the world feel more alive. It's kind of a bummer how everyone is single because they didn't marry YOU. The system in AP was less competitive, since you were more of a wingman than a passive observer and it was FUN! I don't see why rival marriages can't at least be post-game content. You can only settle down with one character in these games, so why can't I spend my married years setting up my friends/exes? That's what I did in AP and it incentivized me to play much longer. The rival cut scenes weren't great (except for Toby and Renee, OTP) but the kids were so cute. My ideal HM/SOS game would be the same cozy vibe, but with great characters, great romances, lots of events, interesting children, and the option to be a nosy matchmaker. Ideal Rune Factory game would be much of the same but the story actually matters lmao.
i feel like the '___ you've never heard of' title is such a meme at this point because harvest moon isn't obscure at all heck, when i was a kid, the least nerdy friend i had played harvest moon...
Harvest Moon 64 is one of my absolute favourite games of all time and i'm definitely in the camp of people who were terribly baffled about the changes in BTN/Friends of Mineral Town (though I still played a ton of Mineral Town regardless). I loved that Stardew Valley recaptured a lot of what I loved about the older games, but I still wasn't entirely satisfied with its characters, so I'm glad there's a farming sim boom now. I want to see everyone's takes on the genre! One thing to note about Harvest Moon DS Cute, is that you could unlock the Mineral Town bachelors by inserting the cart into the GBA slot of the DS. this made the marriage options a LOT more bearable, haha
I love this! It's cool to see something different and a bit unexpected on this channel - not to mention in a long format. I can not conceive of anyone that plays farming-esque sims to not know harvest moon, but that really shows the power of marketing and how being a few years older/younger exposes us as children to such different media.
Harvest moon is soooooo special to me. Started the AWL on the gamecube, then played every game before that and after when they came out. It was the first series of games that I got really into as a kid. I had a turbulent childhood and harvest moon was such a nice escape. My favorite is definitely animal parade, but a wonderful life and the originally DS game (and DS cute) are the kost nostalgic.
I was pretty obsessed with Harvest Moon 64 back in the day, and it has a huge place in my heart. I'd love to see a similar game with more modern techniques and capabilities.
it kills me seeing harvest moon/story of seasons being called the original stardew, i grew up on these games and i will always see them as the superior, yes stardew got a lot right and is an amazing game and i love concernedape, but the old HM games always had this charm to them, each release new marriage candidates, new characters, new stories! i respect everyones opinion on the matter, just pains me that so few nowadays really dont know HM/SoS as well since stardew popped into the limelight
I grew up playing Harvest Moon and I loved them! Of course now I prefer Xseeds Story of Seasons. The US kept the harvest moon name but none of the creative team, thus why Harvest Moon titles are so bad now.
Just to be clear, Natsume was just a localization team, Marvelous is the studio making the games (both old Harvest Moon and the rebrand Story of Seasons). Xseed is a subsidiary of Marvelous responsible for localizing Story of Seasons games.
32:00 actually Rune Factory 4 and Rune Factory 5 dropped the "A Fantasy Harvest Moon" subtitle exclusively because it was being localized by XSEED and not Natsume. There was no other reason. The series never had such a subtitle in Japan.
I remember playing the HM 3 GB and having the game suddenly end when Sara got married made me so upset. It was my first HM game and kinda put me off on playing any of the others for a long time. Great video and super interesting!
Mineral Town was also the start of my love for this series and the remake with same sex marriage really made me so happy haha. It still weirds me out when people aren't familiar with this series cause it seemed like such a big name in my eyes gahahaha
I LOVE HARVEST MOON and friends of mineral town was also my introduction and my favourite of the series. Side note, Almost choked on my water when i heard Gaia Online mentioned at the end!😂 Gurl did you and I live the same life??!
I love your video. Harvest Moon is my childhood game. My cousins used to play Back to Nature in the PS and PSP which made fall in the love with it especially with the character dialogue artworks and expressions. My favorite bachelors and bachelorettes are Gray, Cliff, and Elli.
i absolutely loved island of happiness as a kid, and have still not played any other harvest moon game (stardew is just too good). my favourite was vaughn, although i could never figure out how to woo him so i always went with elliot. these days i go for his sister natalie lol. i often see IoH forgotten when talking about the series. thanks for shouting it out! what a great video :)
This was an unexpected topic, but it definitely brought joy to my day! I had Friends of Mineral Town, More Friends of Mineral Town, and Island of Happiness 🥰🥰🥰

Wow if someone's never heard of harvest moon they probably haven't heard of the games on the thumbnail either. Living under a rock
I do not know how many hours I have spent playing Island of Happiness but each hour has given me immense happiness
what do you mean never heard of?? it's a huge franchise that inspired other similar games, like Stardew Valley. me and all my friends had it on gamecube, ds, wii, etc. i'm so confused by this title lol
You mentioned that Harvest Moon GBC 2 added the Greenhouse feature to the game, but it was first introduced in Harvest Moon 64. (I would know, I spent the better part of last year trying to get a full photo album in that game, and you need to build the Greenhouse in order to get one of the photos.)
Harvest Moon 64 is such a fun game, I really love how it had rival marriages and the photo album.
Would be great since spooky season is starting!
yes please i love scream queens fashion
A video about HARVEST MOON by ModernGurlz??!!! I would never have expected it but this was a pleasant surprise I LOVED harvest moon AND this channel is one I enjoy tuning into omg
The snes version had a cheat of a sort - endless night. This meant that you could clear the fields in one day (for restoring energy, you went to the bar).
I’ve been following this channel for a few years now, and I never would have thought this crossover (MG + HM) would be possible 😂 I am very pleased ❤
They weren’t all perfect games, and they usually have something to improve or could’ve added- but they all bring me right back to incredibly positive childhood memories…
Love harvest moon/story of seasons!
Also love the animal crossing series, harvest moon/story of seasons and animal crossing have holds on me…
This game influenced my whole existence 😭❤️
JUST started playing Stardew Valley for the first time, and I was hit with Harvest Moon memories instantly.
Love them both.
ya'll remember the mountain hut on friends of mineral town that you'll only get after being married for 50 years?!
never got close to that at all
AHHH I love this! 💕🌳👩🏽🌾🌾 I grew up playing HM on the GameCube and DS and it has always been one of my favorites! I feel like no one ever talks about it and how it impacted sim type games so thank you 🙏🏻 the art style really inspired me as an artist as well
🌻🌷🌱🪻🌹
What's everyone's favorite HM/SoS game?
A deep dive, I would have loved more detail and more lenght. But I am unhinged haha.
Thanks for covering a large amount of the series.
Keep doing this kind of videos please 😭 there is so much culture. I loved it
How have people not heard of harvest moon? It was super popular when we were kids?
100% agree with your statement, this is what I've been thinking with the series the whole time
I spent hundred of hours on Harvest Moon DS, it's got a very special place in my heart
i feel like the '___ you've never heard of' title is such a meme at this point because harvest moon isn't obscure at all
heck, when i was a kid, the least nerdy friend i had played harvest moon...
Harvest moon is a game I play till this day so I’m happy somebody put some credit to this game for all its sons that have come out
I was obsessed with harvest moon, I’m so stoked it’s getting more love! Great video as usual
Harvest moon is my favourite. I am also autistic so it was one of my childhood (and still) hyper-fixation and special interest.
I'd love to see a similar game with more modern techniques and capabilities.
omg modern gurlz is talking about video games now that's it i don't need any other channel on youtube i have everything i love right here
it kills me seeing harvest moon/story of seasons being called the original stardew, i grew up on these games and i will always see them as the superior, yes stardew got a lot right and is an amazing game and i love concernedape, but the old HM games always had this charm to them, each release new marriage candidates, new characters, new stories! i respect everyones opinion on the matter, just pains me that so few nowadays really dont know HM/SoS as well since stardew popped into the limelight
Harvest moon will always have that soft ghibli-esque feel that stardew has never managed to achieve. I love stardew for different reasons tho.
The series never had such a subtitle in Japan.
the first one did, though
the subtitle was "shin bokujou monogatari"
@@rhiatinsel7321 I feel like I vaguely remember that, thanks for correcting me!
Tides of destiny didnt have the subtitle but it was also localized by natsume... I don't think it had to do with who was localizing it at all
Harvest Moon: Friends and More Friends of Mineral Town is my introduction to the genre and it hold a special place in my heart
ive heard of it !! IT WAS MY WHOLE CHILDHOOD😭😭😭
GIRL SAME
IT'S A GENRE DEFINING WORK!!
I remember playing the HM 3 GB and having the game suddenly end when Sara got married made me so upset. It was my first HM game and kinda put me off on playing any of the others for a long time. Great video and super interesting!
I LOVE HARVEST MOON!!!!!!!!!!!!! And tysm for making this video never imagined the day i so needed this i love this. i ADORE story of seasons.
Mineral Town was also the start of my love for this series and the remake with same sex marriage really made me so happy haha. It still weirds me out when people aren't familiar with this series cause it seemed like such a big name in my eyes gahahaha
I remember playing Harvest Moon a wonderful life back then at my friend's PS2. I love roaming around the map with the horse.
I've been binge watching your videos for the past two days. I'm obsessed.
I LOVE HARVEST MOON and friends of mineral town was also my introduction and my favourite of the series. Side note, Almost choked on my water when i heard Gaia Online mentioned at the end!😂 Gurl did you and I live the same life??!
harvest moon animal parade is my childhood. it’s my favorite video game still
Maybe a retrospective of the Princess Maker series next?
Innocent Life!!! I love that game but it was nearly impossible to find later in my life, after it'd let it go. What a blast from the past...
I love your video. Harvest Moon is my childhood game. My cousins used to play Back to Nature in the PS and PSP which made fall in the love with it especially with the character dialogue artworks and expressions. My favorite bachelors and bachelorettes are Gray, Cliff, and Elli.
Looooove the videogame-themed videos! I'd love to see your take on bayonetta btw!!! 💕
I never expected this channel to cover one of my favorite game series ever omg
I was literally looking for a video like this yesterday and couldn't find many. What a coincidence but thank you!!!!
Bold of you to assume I’ve never heard of harvest moon while I’m playing stardew valley religiously in 2023
i absolutely loved island of happiness as a kid, and have still not played any other harvest moon game (stardew is just too good). my favourite was vaughn, although i could never figure out how to woo him so i always went with elliot. these days i go for his sister natalie lol. i often see IoH forgotten when talking about the series. thanks for shouting it out! what a great video :)
This was an unexpected topic, but it definitely brought joy to my day! I had Friends of Mineral Town, More Friends of Mineral Town, and Island of Happiness 🥰🥰🥰
