in the 90s i helped my dad wire up his big stereo made of multiple pieces. in the 2000s i connected my pc/boombox/tv/vcr all together with multiple cables. i appreciate the cable spaghetti you have there.
Thanks a lot! The Wii is actually the perfect console to connect to a PVM because it can do 240p natively and be easily soft modded to play SNES, genesis, GBA, etc
The component cable is still worth the upgrade even if you don't have a PVM monitor or framemeister. Get a component cable via a good company like Retrovision, and then grab yourself a Retrotink converter/upscaler to output it via HDMI. I havent tested it, but I would suspect that the similar results can be had with using a Wii U to play your wii games instead. It wont look as good in-person as Mike's setup looks (240-480i looks WAY better on the old tube TVs/monitors), but it will definitely look considerably better than if you just used the yellow RCA for video with no upscaling. If you have a 4k tv, no other older TV and are annoyed at how bad things look, this is a no-brainer. P.S.: That old RCA to stereo-mini Y cable adapter trick is also great if you have external speakers you want to hook up to. Long ago, something I bought came with one and, from then on, my life was changed. I never used shitty TV speakers ever again to play videogames on unless I had no other choice.
I have this component cable that has three heads: Wii, Xbox 360, and PS2. I used it to play CoD4 MW on 360, then move on to use it to play Skyward Sword on the Wii.
I'm using a softmodded Wii connected to a late model CRT (Sanyo's knockoff of a Sony Wega) with component cables. It doesn't support 480p, but the emulators I use on my Wii for NES, SNES, Genesis, SMS, and Turbo/PCE support video output in true 240 doublestrike mode. The picture quality is fantastic, similar to what you would see with an RGB mod console. With video output in the real video mode with no scaling artifacts, it doesn't look like emulation at all.
Thats not at all what happened. Erin has had her own BVM that has always been hers with her setup. I personally have a whole bunch of different monitors. BVMs, PVMs and lots of different consumer level CRTs.
The scart is to output progressive scan on a non progressive pvm am I right? I have component on all my consoles directly into a component switcher to the a non progressive pvm
Thanks I have a Sony PVM and I was having troubles getting RGB out of my Wii looks like I need the cables going out of the PVM that's what I was missing, do they need to go into a Frammister or is there some other option?
I’m trying to use the same component cable to hook up my GameCube using the GCHD MK 2 adapter to my Sony bvm 8045Q but the picture comes out with two images on the screen. Each one leaning towards the left and right side of the crt. It’s weird. Do you know of any solution?
To be fair, the differences between component and RGB are pretty negligible. Both formats are sending the color information separately, rather than jammed into a single line on something like composite. Side by side comparisons of component and RGB on almost every console show almost identical results in most cases. If someone has access to component on a console, I'd tell them to not even think twice about RGB.
Hey Mike! I appreciate the video! Curious if there is a way to convert rca to component? For my needs, I have all of these analog glitch boxes for video art and the output from those is a yellow rca output. In order to get the best image on my pvm, should I just go from rca into the bnc adapter and straight into the pvm or should I convert the rca to component first somehow before using the bnc adapter? Thanks!
Nah theres no way of converting, at least not while maintaining the advantages of component video since the compisite(rca) cables are not capable of carrying this type of information
I know you’re kinda a purest when it comes to video connectivity etc, but I recommend trying the Hyperkin Wii HDMI Adapter because it doesn’t upscale and maxes out at 480p. I then use the mClassic to scale it to 1080p with a bit of a nice image cleanup. And this also works with GameCube games on the Wii.
Just be European, SCART has been a standard that we European weirdo's have been spoiled with, but it's unique because for the most part we just assumed this was standard (global). I'm currently looking for a VGA PC (HD15) to SCART cable, aparreently its quite complicated and not just something like wiring pin to pin.
I use wii to hdmi adapter, same with my ps2 and og xbox to hdmi adapter, to get those component systems over to hdmi which then goes through an mclassic to make the image look better.
Do component cables really improve Wii image? I think they lack the processing hardware that for example GC has. It always annoy me everytime I come back and play my Wii to see how shitty and bad is the quality of a console that was supposed to compete with 360/PS3. Glad I bought it only for 10$
On an HDTV, PVM or BVM, there's a world of difference. Component shows off way more color depth and clarity. But, if you're using your Wii on a consumer CRT or something, I'd say the difference is pretty negligible between composite, s-video and component.
Then if you soft mod your Wii you will open up even more possibilities. Such as the homebrew Nintendont that will allow you to play gamecube natively at the highest resolution possible at 480p. Also all the virtual console library. Then you have emulation also possible in the homebrew channel but doubt you would be that interested in that since I know you specialize in real hardware. But could be an option if you don’t want to jack with plugging in multiple systems.
That's an awesome pvm! Love the set up. Quick question, is a framemeister the same as an El gato or does it have a better transfer or something? Keep up the great work Mike! 👍
Cool video. I did get frustrated with the Wii before for the same issue. I got Mad Catz EE688812 Video / audio cable or similar type of cable cause it was cheaper at the time so i could use ps2, xbox or wii (never had an xbox but at least have the option).
Castlevania Rebirth and Contra Rebirth are trapped in my Wii. If it craps out those games are permanently gone since the Wii shop doesn't exist anymore. So dumb. I can watch Metropolis from 1927 but I can't play a Wii game form 2006. Allh hail the imbalance of the digital age I guess.
Interesting, I have my Wii going over component but into an LCD in 480p mode, except for some GC games. It's interesting how it does the 16:9 on Wii/NGC tho, it acts like turning up FOV on a PC game, so for FPS like Metroid Prime or something its cool, others not so much lol
Mike has single-handedly kept Radio Shack afloat over the years
Comment of the year lmfao
😂😂😂😂
It already went under in Canada because Mike is not here.

I love the fact that the Wii still works on a CRT. I still play it with component to my CRT. I don't have any PVM's but I still love my CRT's.
Umm… why would it not? Lol
Short version: you buy component cables and plug them into the component inputs.
If it’s RGB/component then you need adapters.
Great little informational video!

480p on my PVM is definitely the best I've ever seen the Wii look

nice one mike thanks
Very interesting thanks for sharing
I love how Mike just tossed his BVM unit over to Erin and downgraded back to the medical PVM he had from before...
Thats not at all what happened. Erin has had her own BVM that has always been hers with her setup.

@@mikematei Ah I see, my apologies then. Had no idea you guys had more than the two displays haha
i didnt know it wasnt rgb. i thought componants made it so. i guess a composite signal upscales or something?

The scart is to output progressive scan on a non progressive pvm am I right? I have component on all my consoles directly into a component switcher to the a non progressive pvm

Will a modded NTSC Wii do 60Hz SCART?

you can play wii games on wiiu with hdmi
Would this still need sync or is that just for rgb cables, not component
So glad I live in Europe!

do you play everything on the pvm?
Not the Vectrex
*Nice 20m2mdu!*
The sucky part is having to turn off progressive scan, but it might be worth it if you can't afford a couple of lag frames.
in this case your wii output video was 480i or 480p ?
and what about the sync with the pvm ?
Probably 480i. You usually need a computer monitor for 480p
Mike!!!!!

Fairly sure Wii does RGB over scart without mod although won't look any better than component, May look worse if scart cant do 480p.
Won't work with NTSC Wii only EU Wii so lame

Why not just play Wii games on the wiiU? It's hdmi and easy
So I can play it on a retro monitor.
