- After the cameras and crowds leave Selma after a week of celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr. marching thousands across the Edmund Pettus Bridge to Montgomery, Alabama, all that's left is a struggling town where bullets are common background noise and the memory of what happened on that bridge is all but a distant memory.

The old black man’s house broke my heart.
I was born in California but moved to the south in the late 90's (Atlanta, Georgia). The poverty in the south is very bad compared to other parts of the nation. It's truly a sad thing.
Dont Atlanta have over 15 Fortune 500 companies HQ there? You expect Atlanta to be thriving.

Sam Wallace Skid Row is safe compared to trenches in the South and Midwest, shit even the east coast has plenty of fucked up areas but the west coast is very nice compared to the rest of America. The worst neighborhoods in Cali look better than best neighborhoods in a lot of other states.
I use to work at the Post Office in Selma. The busiest days were 1st - 5th of the Month. Churches Chicken stayed open 24 hours from 1st - 5th and had police directing traffic for the drive through. Winn Dixie would be slammed packed with young mothers buying several grocery carts full of food, using EBT cards and then had the elderly baggers, load it in new cars. Yeah, Selma is a shinning example of wonderfulness.

im 36 born & raised n the magic city!! i love Alabama but i moved out of the south when I was 19. Since then Ive lived & traveled all over the country. i have never seen anyplace, anywhere near the level of poverty thats in the deep south & it breaks my heart!

I live in Birmingham in the Vestavia suburb and these run down parts of town need to stop relying and demanding that the government fix their problems and do something about it themselves. The main problem is they don't care enough to do maintenance and basic upkeep on their communities and houses. They will just let them disintegrate and do nothing and then demand something else from the government. Hardly any of them work and they feel entitled to a house, utilities, cash money, food, cell phones and internet, and everything else free from the government. I'm talking about blacks and whites. You can't help people who just don't care and are not willing to put the work in.

The parts of the town in this video used to be nice 35yrs ago, many of the whites moved out (the ones that could) I’m white and escaped.

I spent my childhood in Selma. It went to hell when Craig Air Force base closed. I escaped in 88 when I joined the Army. Jobs are few and far between. I’m white and 55 now The only jobs at the time was The Candy factory, Cigar plant, piliods, and the lawn mower factory. We. Had to chain the hoods down on our cars so the battery wouldn’t get stolen and sold at the scrap yard.

I live in selma there are a lot of jobs here but they have to pull people from other cities that are qualified. Over 5000 people commute from bigger cities everyday to work in Selma. Not including the thousands of people in Selma that actually have jobs in Selma. East Selma is just a bad part of Selma! Rest of city looks nothing like this.
What are the Citizens, doing on a personal level, to improve things in Selma?
So, John McWilliams wants a change in Selma, Alabama? Well he can start by picking up his trash! Do you see what he does at 1:08, throwing that piece of wood over the fence? That 'hood is full of dead trees and scrap wood, he could buy an oil drum and use it to make charcoal, with all that free wood and fuel. Those old auto tires in that yard could fuel the kiln. Then you have all the abandoned houses in the area, empty and falling down. They could be stripped of wood and used to build chicken coops. Then you have all this empty land everywhere, why aren't they plowing it and growing their own food?
Where's the fun in all that?

They've got to be kidding. The houses are decaying and they're complaining about it? It's their home, it's nobody else's responsibility to maintain it. Anybody who's worked in the building trades knows that a collapsed foundation can't be fixed.

It takes a lot of money to hire the labor, or to buy the tools and equipment to perform the labor yourself. Jefferson had a lot of money.

It's interesting that they are taking no personal responsibility for their circumstances. They want someone to come in and fix their houses or give them new houses and clean up their neighborhoods and make everything shiny and new again. However, they have saved no money for repairs on their houses, nor have they done the basic maintenance needed for homes to stay in good shape. The same goes for their neighborhoods and everything else. It is their responsibility to fix their situation and not anyone else's. Why have they not been saving any money or why don't they get groups together to work as a team to better their situation and neighborhood. And just because no one seems to want to work these days and no one wants to save any money. They want to spend it as soon as they get it and demand that someone else give them the entitlements that they feel they deserve. It's disgusting these situations did not happen overnight. They happened over decades and Decades of not working or giving back into the community.

So typical of everyone in SELMA. I live here and we need the youth to see and put into the community an energy. No one gives a fat rat's behind. Everyone wants something for nothing. We NEED TO WORK TOGETHER and it will change. But until then, this decay and mold grows more and more. It takes a community that cares, not an outside government that does not care. We need to take care of ourselves and the community, working together. But what the hell do I know...

Then no exaggeration 5 min later a man approached me while I'm eating lunch to beg for money. This man was no doubt on some substance. Had maybe 10 teeth and was impaired. Drugs are a problem. Education is a problem. And their politicians are a problem. Oh and the restaurant I was at had a plywood board over the door from where someone had recently broken in... They claim they want change yet elect the same people year after year with empty promises.

The community needs to fix it's self. Go find jobs even if you have to move out of the city. Put the down the guns and apply for financial aid for school. Make your community what you want your community to be. The blessedly Martin Luther King Jr didn't sit around and complain what was wrong with civil rights he went out and made that change. They need to do the same. Best wishes to them.

“We need a change real bad”. But,then they expect govt. or somebody else to come in and make it better. It’s up to the citizens to make that change. Sure a little outside help is good but you can’t expect anybody to change where you live but you. I worked in Selma building schools for around 10 years. We’d build a nice new school. Then we’d come back for repairs or whatever a short time later and they’re destroyed. Nobody came in from the outside and destroyed their schools. The people in Selma did.
You are full of crap & don’t know the 1st thing about development. You first have to have an economic base in which the natural resources are controlled by the residents…….whats the economic base in Selma? These residents don’t own appreciating assets with which to use as collateral. European immigrants were granted 1/4 billion acres & the tools & education to farm it in the homestead act for just showing up & being white. Black people didn’t get squat after 250 years of stolen labor & prevented from education. The 1st has had a 100 yrs + to build generational wealth while the later has not & probably still living just yards away from the plantation from whence they came. Go sit down & read a book. Start with the Color of Money & then the Color of Law. My parents literally ESCAPED a sharecropping system and the terrorism of that area to the west. My siblings & I are all Drs lawyers & engineers. Mindset my foot! We were lucky to get out, others weren’t as fortunate.
