      That she seems to feel no remorse for what her husband did to people and is mainly just sad she went from being incredibly rich and never having to do actual work, to just being moderately rich and never having to do actual work.

      John Mac But it's not all about money.Yeah she's still wealthier than most but both her children are dead, her husband is in prison, she has no friends, everyone hates her, her reputation is permanently destroyed...what good is being somewhat rich if your life is shit? • @KR8TZ
      @KR8TZ 6 лет назад +14

      Many of Bernies investors were fellow country club members,and nobody lost so much so that they were driven into poverty....Your story about your aunt and uncle is about as believable as the tooth fairy or santy claus.....Bernie shook down the rich and greedy,who had no problems losing what they did to him... Notice how no person of modest means has ever said...Yeah Bernie ripped me off!! Because he didn't. I was a kid of modest means and Bernie Madoff financed my STC training and got me my series 7 and 63 exams. How much were the yearly dues at your poor aunt and uncles country club? More than most people make in a year for sure.

    • @KR8TZ
      @KR8TZ 5 лет назад +2

      @mizzmolly....I'm not sure what was or wasn't recovered and couldn't even pretend to know,but one thing I do know is that Bernie did not prey on people of meager or modest incomes. He didn't prey on people at all. His clients were members of the upper crust,and anyone who took a hit,was able to maintain a lifestyle that didn't consist of eating cat food or dumpster diving. Plus,once fraud was established,the investments were insured. Greed clouded peoples judgement and they got,got. Bernie was a stand up guy,and I would bet everything I own on his sons being the real culprits behind what happened...They were cool but shifty AF. And Ruth was a sweetheart of a woman,very generous.

    • @KR8TZ
      @KR8TZ 5 лет назад

      @mizzmolly .....The thing with investing is that that you can never lose more than you invest,and if you place the entirety of your savings into one investment vehicle,you are asking for trouble. When the Madoff corporation was seized and liquidated,the biggest creditors were paid off first,and then the money trickled down to the smaller investors,and once fraud was established I believe that SIPC protects investors up to 250K in cash,or 500K,I don't remember.. In order to open accounts with Bernie,you needed a certain amount of money,that wasn't tied up in Social Security or pensions. You needed a certain amount of disposable income If you've got a half million in disposable income,outside of your pension,401K and Social Security,you're not doing bad at all. I'm just not so sure about the stories of purported victims in this story because I knew quite a few of his investors,and believe me,they're not hurting. Bernie didn't open up accounts for people with modest incomes,whose lives hung in the balance,and again...I'd be willing to be it all on my belief that he wasn't behind it. Perhaps my opinion is biased based on my interactions with him and the fact that I consider myself to be a pretty good judge of character. His boys are another story altogether though,and part of the whole Stratton Oakmont,Victor Wang,Danny Porush craze in the late 80s and 90s...Young guns who had no problems robbing people blind to support lavish lifestyles and habits.

    • @KR8TZ
      @KR8TZ 5 лет назад +3

      @John Cenataur.....Here's the thing about investing...You can never lose more than the amount that you put in,unless you guy options on margin. The people who invested,weren't small time investors,nor were they people of modest means,it wasn't the circle that the Madoffs travelled in. No one was completely broke by Bernie.

I'm afraid this family could be victims of narcissistic abuse from the father. He may have such personality or traits: controlling, pathological liar. She lost her sons, her life was destroyed by the husband so many admired, respected. I feel for her and respect his sons who showed integrity, courage. I admire the son who set boundaries, made mother to chose between children and their abuser. I believe Bernie told them to turn him in and cut ties with him in order to show their innocence and protect them. Sadly it didn't help them. Overcome with guilt for turning their dad in or having their possible involvement covered up took it's toll. Making their mother choose between them and their dad was cruel. I believe she was innocent and devastated when she learned the truth.

      @@denisehoffman2817 No one in anything I’ve read has brought up that theory that maybe when the family met because Bernie wanted to tell them the truth (so they say), or that the end had come, who knows if the family didn’t devise the plan that the sons would turn him in to protect themselves. I agree it’s a possibility. It just doesn’t make sense to me that if the one son really didn’t know anything, and he turned his dad in (which then wipes him clean of any guilt), and then had another son (so everything to live for), and he was already financially set from the company he and his brother worked in and could have worked anywhere or started another business, that he would be so distraught over what his dad did 2 years prior that he had to take his life? No one has ever said the sons lost money or jobs or had to live poor. And maybe they were so fearful of being found out they wanted their mother to cut all ties from her husband. The one son wouldn’t talk to her because she hadn’t at the time and she wasn’t even allowed at his funeral. The other son finally talked to his mother after she quit visiting or receiving telephone calls. I think he knew his mother always maintained contact through letters because that was the one thing in the 60 minute interview not mentioned. They just said she cut off all visits and phone calls. She didn’t condone what he did publicly but she loved her husband. If she felt he was a bad or evil person she would have divorced him long ago.

      Wives are in marriages where most times from lovers, to business, to even being killers, wives are oblivious! Working in a firm does not mean one knows what’s going on. Many men die leaving their families with debt and losses they knew nothing about. The sententious rantings and baying for blood of certain people is obnoxious. Money is printed paper! Here now gone tomorrow. All that gave Madoff their money, were after tons of more money! None is better than the other. Everyday moguls send their money to overseas tax havens to avoid paying taxes! Madoff was the stooge made to warn off other traders. It’s a world most of us know little or next to nothing.

She lost her sons, her life was destroyed by the husband so many admired, respected. I feel for her and respect sons who showed integrity, courage. I admire the son who set boundaries, made mother to chose between children and their abuser. If father is a narc he lies about missing children to present himself as a victim in order to get attention, so called 'narcissistic supply'. And having attention of media, inmates, curious people he thrives because attention is all narcissist needs to thrive.

I think Ruth must have suspected something...I don't believe she was as naïve as all that. I remember when a judge scolded actress Doris Day for not paying attention to her husband's mismanagement of her fortune...she ended up flat broke and went to court to try and retrieve some of her fortune that had been swindled from her by her husband and her lawyer. Lesson to be learned...pay attention to what is going on when it comes to money...ask questions.

      Don't know how old you are but not so long ago women were not allowed to have their own credit, nor even legally own property. Women of my mother's generation were not brought up to worry about finances. Their prospects were to marry and let their husbands be the breadwinners. I'm not making excuses for Ruth Madoff. I don't think anyone can know without a doubt whether she knew anything. What I am saying is that for a woman of her age, she may have been brought up not to concern herself with the details of her husband's job or the family finances. Her domain was her house and family. Also, Madoff was so devious and deceptive, I have no doubt he could have kept it from family. How he could live with himself is altogether another matter.

    A lot of people say "she didn't know a thing". Possibly they are in a similar situation but with much less money.
    My question is shouldn't she had known? When your spouse brings in enormous amounts of money another spouse is bound to ask where all this money comes from. What if it is illegal or stolen goods? When you spend the money you are morally obligated to find out where it comes from. Personally I would not be able to live on my spouse's money if I didn't know the truth behind it.

    They asked Bernie in an interview once, "When you had more money than you could ever spend in multiple lifetimes, why didn't you just stop instead of digging yourself in deeper?" His answer was mind-boggling. He said at that point it was no longer about the money but more about the fact that he didn't want to admit defeat. His ego was so used to being admired for how smart his investments were and that he never invested in anything that didn't make a profit, he couldn't bring himself to tell others that he made some costly mistakes. So because of his over-inflated ego and power trip, millions of people lost everything. People like this don't have an ounce of humanity in them. They would step over someone dying in the street to pick up a dollar bill. She'll probably be joining her loving hubby in the inferno when she goes. No pity here!

    When you cheat and hurt people don't expect life to be sweet. You accrue a lot of enemies and you put your family in danger. What looks like a suicide could be a way of victims getting even. people are devious and most people are nice but if you hurt the wrong person by taking away from his family you may watch everything you love go away.

    I would think she's sad. Her son committed suicide. How does she survive that? Her son carried the scandal to his grave, while Madoff eats Oreos in jail, after destroying so many lives.
    HOW, after sleeping in the bed of this sociopath for 50 years, did she not know what Madoff was doing or up to??? Doesn't a wife have instincts? She doesn't seem stupid to me. Was she that cut off, while buying Prada bags and more? Really? Something is off.
