- What do Jesuit priests, gin and tonics, and ancient Chinese scrolls have in common? They all show up in our animated history of malaria.
It's a story of geopolitical struggles, traditional medicine, and above all, a war of escalation between scientists and a tiny parasite. Malaria has proved to be a wily foe: Every time we think we have it backed into a corner, it somehow escapes.

At least give credit to the lady, Youyou Tu who discovered it instead of just labelling them Mao's scientists. The discovery saved millions of lives around the world and she even received a Nobel prize for it...
Man, now all I want to do is drink a Gin & Tonic and watch NPR's videos!
I'm surprised the use of DDT was not mentioned, DDT played a crucial part in the near eradication of malaria.
@Mike Kavanagh, well there's a new one. The usual claim by Carson / Ruckelshaus apologists is that DDT was wiping out raptors. (It wasn't.)
DDT is kind of like "climate change" -- it is claimed (by _someone_ anyhow) of being responsible for almost any harm imaginable. And, like climate change, it's a bum rap. tinyurl.com/learnmore4
The USA eradicated it with screens, Drain swamps, DDT, Diesel oil. But it comes with a price. DDT is a harsh pesticide which thins raptor shells and almost wiped out the bald eagle.
And it took 20 years
What is the name of the plant that prevent female anopheless' bite
You really can't blame or hate the parasite. For parasites are also subject to this life game of survival and adaptation.
cool, I very much like the style of this video!
Who is here from Bite Me at UF ?
It being "artificial" had nothing to do with it, it's because it was so widely used the parasite evolved a resistance to the drug. It wouldn't of made a difference if they used the original plant or not.
Hey its been 10 years did the new drug get released yet
Nov 2021 anyone? Diseases never get old, so do it's precautions
What? No! Did you even pay attention? They ground up the herb and took it in gin and tonic, but the parasite adapted...do you consider the use of a mortar and pestle as "creating artificial versions of a natural herb"? Are you of the opinion that we should have not bothered trying to cure people at all?
Wow! I love historical stuff like this!
because my Language is not English, and if you don't believe me just google "how Plasmodium infects humans"
You should do an update on this.
I also want to eat this grain
You have a lot to learn about basic medicine and even logic.
