In this video we take a look back at the last 2 years of game dev, which I spent making a multiplayer pirate game. From the early beginnings of working with a console app-based server and BepuPhysics, to experimenting with shaders, water simulation, and island generation, to the more recent additions of grappling hooks, this video summarizes the entire journey so far and shows what 2 years of indie game progress (might) look like.
If you're new to the channel, this is a great way to get up to speed on development without having to watch ALL of my existing devlogs (although the last 2 are definitely worth checking out!). Working on this project has been a wild ride so far, with lots of mistakes and lessons that I learned along the way, and I can't wait to see what the next 2 years will be like! Развлечения

Woah...I didn't even realize :P
hmmmmmmmm
You've done so much work in 2 years and I hope you keep working on this awesome game. Great job Tom
Honestly, it doesn't always feel like a lot though...probably because I spent a lot of time learning and experimenting instead of always making forward progress.
@@tomweiland yes, but it's the learning and the experimenting that drives that progress
Hey Tom, ive just found this and wow, i honestly cant wait to see how far this comes!

Always nice to see how it goes along the road ;)
Wish you the best for your project, and keep having fun!
Thanks, same to you :)
I don't know why you insist on your videos being boring! I find them extremely informative, focused in advanced topics which is something rather odd to find in youtube where most of tutorials are targeted to beginners. Keep up with the great work!
Well I mean the older devlogs aren't that engaging-if/when I go back and watch parts of them, it's always a struggle :P
Also the more informative videos unfortunately don't appeal to as broad an audience, but I appreciate what you're trying to say!

I was lured into your net ( _Haha get it? Pirate fishing net_ ) via your networking tutorials of course! I stayed for the Tom narration xD

The first ones I watched were the networking tutorials because dani mentioned you and I kinda wanted to make some multiplayer overwatch like game. That was a huge mistake since I hadn’t completed a game before, but it led me to your videos which have been very inspiring. 👌
@@Rider-og5xb haha yeah, a lot of people heard about my networking tutorial through Dani :P

you are a legend and a inspiration for me bro love your work. Sorry if mistaken in my English.
Thanks, I appreciate that, and your English seems totally fine :)
As someone who just started unity courses to try to recreate last oasis, I appreciate these videos. I feel like you went down the same path of not being able to find a game to play and the ones that were out weren't even close to cutting it..... I have a long road ahead but this is a big motivation boost
Glad to hear it! Sea of Thieves has come pretty close to the game I've always wanted to play (and I've played it quite a lot), but there's a bunch of things I wish the game had or did differently which will almost certainly never be implemented. So now I'm building this :P
@@tomweiland I can see. You basically turned it into last oasis and what last oasis originally was. Grapple hook, wingsuit, even though you aren't planning that, and full survival but with directional combat. My issue with it is, the devs have completely destroyed the game I love and changed it from its original state so much, that it doesn't resemble what it was in its glory days. Best of luck to you! Can't wait to try it out!
I prefer the videos over 10 minutes but im sure that changes with how much you have added. Regardless I've caught up! I'm excited to watch your updates in real time and I hope you have plenty to post im the future. Thank you for putting so much effort into the game and into these uploads. I'm wishing you luck!
Thank you for the kind words! I also prefer the longer videos (at least once I'm done, actually editing them can be a pain), but it's definitely not easy to regularly make enough progress to fill a 10+ minute video while also working on other projects along the way :/
What a surprise I was when I saw you on one of the forums where a person asked how to connect not on a local network. Your advice on port forwarding helped me, thanks.
Glad I could help! Which forum was that on?

i think you made the great choice to do that video, since its making a big recap from the start to the current state, and for new people that maybe didnt fully understand the game etc. I personally want to make a video similar to that one for Hammer 1 year anniversary.

Love your vids and your world!!! I've always wanted to sail the seas in search of treasure. I started a sailing game after seeing yours but I'm struggling to get my player to stay on my boat when it starts moving :(
If both your boat and your player are rigidbodies, friction should be enough to keep the player moving with the boat. To get movement feeling "normal" while on board is a bit trickier though.
I think your unity networking series was really successful (and i come from there as well). I heard you mention that you changed the code and there will be a new tutorial soonish, right?
_Hopefully_ soon. I still have a lot of testing to do and a couple things to add, but assuming that all goes well, definitely within the next few months :)

that looks so fun. im way too inconsistent to stick to a big project like that. i have tried before lol. my dream game is a tech-tree survival/exploration game, the hardest part being a sea of theives style FFT ocean simulation but adapted to work on a cube-sphere planet. I also need to figure out a reusable solution to quadtree LOD for both ocean and terrain on the cube sphere
Yeah that sounds complicated :P
Every fix, comes 8 bugs lol. I love the dedication you have had. I hope you keep with it cause one day, you might have a unique game. SOT sold like crazy, people like to sail 🔥
Yeah, I think (and hope) the pirate game market is big enough for other similar, but unique, games. Even if it doesn't end up selling "like crazy", hopefully it'll sell enough to at least make it interesting (since a pirate game with no pirates playing it wouldn't be very exciting lol).
@@tomweiland I think as long as you stick with your own ideas such as the grappling hook, and you don't go too far out of bounds with the stuff you add, you should be fine homie. I like your direction with being able to claim land or have your own stuff. That alone would set your game apart from SOT. Id like to be able to maybe build my ship even by collecting the parts required or something along those lines. You have room to make this your own stand alone 🙏 and to be doing this solo, I support you 100%
Thanks, I appreciate it :D

Unfortunately I haven't had time to work on the project these last few months :/
@@tomweiland aslong as you never give up bro! 👊
Nice work it's incredible seeing the project develop over 2 years!
I must say I'm fully with you on your opinion of Uni, currently there myself and I feel like a lot of it I could've taught myself and not be getting a ridiculous debt 😅
Also wondering! Do you plan to add a weight mechanic to ships so if you fully deck your ship with cannons it moves slower or may sink?
Yeah, the other part is that I was just fed up with school when I graduated. I couldn't imagine doing 4 more years of taking classes, dealing with homework and exams, and this time _paying for it_ :P
Adding extra cannons will definitely slow your ship down-I want to keep ship modifications relatively balanced so that they simply serve different purposes/accommodate various playstyles instead of being objectively better/stronger than other ship builds.
@@tomweiland I get that completely, and I agree, I've made some of the most amazing friends at Uni, but I'd rather not have to do 3 years (1 now) of education for something I could teach myself X)
Oh fantastic! I love the idea of some players going for fast but weak ships whilst some just build absolute tanks!
I think one of the main appeals of university, particularly for computer science, is the connections that you'll probably gain through it.
@@tomweiland oh I agree with that, I've had opportunities to listen to industry legends and it's helped me actually ...you know use LinkedIn lol
Love it :D, when can we play, also how much will it cost?
Honestly, I'm not sure. I hope to get some early testing going _maybe_ sometime this year, but an actual release is still so far away that I haven't really given pricing any thought.
Sweet :)

Ways to make a good pirate game
1. Full PvP server for people that just want to plunder and steal from one another
2. A story mode for people that want an adventure involving pirating.
3. Put a market out that players can trade with one another (in PvP servers would be interesting how they gouge each other for prices and try to nab things to have an advantage over others)
4. A pirate crew as a guild though you can still mutiny against one another.
5. All needed hands and roles for driving the ship. People to manage sails, the helmsman, a ship doctor, ship cook, powder monkey (cannon manage), captain who leads and distributes loot. Pirate captain starts the crew and can choose a quartermaster and first mate who has some levels of authority in the crew.
6. Requirement to eat and drink to put challenges of carefully managing supplies before you go out to sea. Ammunition and other things are also things to limit how long you can stay out in sea and plunder.
7. In PvP servers, players can also side with the Navy to capture and attack pirates for loot if they're better at such things.
8. Third person
9. Ship can be destroyed or drifted and lost in the vast sea. You can take refuge at an island and rebuild a new one if you got enough wood. This would require a shipwright and tools of course. Or get one built at a town.
10. There will be neutral towns which you can sail to and start trading and do quests. But you can also get into fights with other pirate players (long as it's PvP server) but be warned you get attacked by the town guards as well. Just think WoW goblin towns
1/2. I don't really intend on splitting things up that way, but there likely also won't be much story content-certainly nothing as extensive as Sea of Theives' Tall Tales. Unfortunately story content takes a lot of time to develop and is something with comparatively low replay value, which isn't exactly the type of thing I can afford to focus on as a solo dev (or even as a small team).
3. Agreed. A player driven economy/trade system would be cool.
4/5. It sounds like you're talking about crews as a group of AI controlled characters, which is not what I've been envisioning. So far the plan is to have you crew your boat alone or with other real players (much like how Sea of Thieves does it). You can arrange "roles" with your crewmates if you like, but that probably won't be something that's enforced through a game mechanic.
6. I definitely want to include some survival mechanics-eating, drinking, and perhaps even fending off certain diseases (scurvy?).
7. Again, I don't intend to split things into separate PvP and PvE modes, but mercenary/bounty-type quests are something I'm definitely considering.
8. Highly unlikely. I definitely want first person to be a thing, and I'm not going to have that _and_ third person as it'll complicate virtually everything.
9. I'd like to make you steal your first ship from an NPC or something, as your first act of piracy. I'm not really sure yet how I'll handle sinking and getting a new boat.
10. Towns & trading quests will definitely be a thing.
Thanks for the suggestions :)
i dare you to add weather to this masterpiece
Weather is definitely on the list of things I'd like to add!
U can add rum too it will make the world wobbly or blur and the ship will be hard to control BUT reduce the damage caused by other players
Sounds suspiciously like Sea of Thieves' grog, minus the reduced damage part.
1/5/2019 is the first time I ever played Sea Of Thieves, the same day you started work on this pirate game.
Interesting :P
Hey man, been enjoying your videos, especially the tutorials. But I have to say, you are being too hard on yourself! Making mistakes is what makes us go forward. And also, I don't think any of the things you mentioned were boring. I love to know about the super technical stuff that everybody seems to want to avoid. Anyway, hope this comment can lighten up things for you. Good job and keep it up! Ah and if you would like a better model for the character that hunts our dreams, I could make you one! I'm not like the Picasso of 3D art, but I would gladly give you this gift xD
I like talking about the more technical stuff too, but it's really hard to make that stuff interesting for those that don't know as much about game dev, and on a platform like RUclips where average view duration is absolutely essential for having your video pushed out to more people, leaving it in could single-handedly kill off the video :/
I appreciate the offer for a new model, but I'll decline for now as I like the change of pace that modeling provides, and we'll probably overhaul the player model on stream soon.
@@tomweiland I'm sure there would be an audience for the more technical stuff, it just takes time to find them. If you like talking about it, maybe you should just do it!
I also like going back and forth from programming to art. Can't wait to see your new model! Take care and keep it up

Nice progress :D I'd just ignore non-game dev clone comments, they don't understand how and where ideas develop from this early on in design.
You make a good point :P
One of my favorie pirate games is puzzle pirates, interesting island / economy systems in place
Haven't played that-is there anything in particular from that game that you'd like to see me add/that you think could work in this game?
@@tomweiland not in particular, but i thought that a lot of pirate games focus mainly on naval battle but resources and other stuff always is second.
Puzzle pirates had a resource system that was based on what you foraged and where you sold it. Each item needed to be crafted by a shop meaning that if you had a job and people would gather a lot of resources and sell it to your homr island you'd charge less for something but at a good price and people would pay for it or you could specialize in somrthing etc etc. So the item prices were player driven. Players could be citizens of certain island, those islands had a player mayor taking care of stuff. You could create money out of nowhere but 90% of the time it was a closed loop and i liked that. You had a great impact on the economy of an island in how you did things / your pirate alliance.
Also you needed to travel to islands to visit shops. All shops / ships were super customizable (its a 2d game)
Economy-wise that sounds kind of like what I have in mind, except for maybe the players-having-jobs part. Not sure I want to force people into picking a certain role, not to mention that I'm not even sure how that'd really work in an instanced world (where not everyone is on the same map).
@@tomweiland yea i mean they are not forced they were there if you wanted. I had a prototype and what i tried back then was to have a global database for all sessions and players could either increase or decrease certain goods and trade / loot them. But idk that wouldn't fit into your game idea. Really like what you came up with so far 👌
Nice video kinda inspiring. I was wondering how would you build a black flag or (tba) skull and bones inspired game?
That's a very broad question, so I don't actually know how to answer it-what do you mean by how would I build it? Like which tools would I use, or something else?
I also haven't played Black Flag and I'm not overly familiar with Skull and Bones, so if what you actually want to know is specific to those games then I'm not sure I'll be _able_ to give a helpful answer.
Wait you did all this during high school? That is quiet impressive.
The first year that I was working on this project, I was still in high school, yes 😅
In my opinion, it would be nice to see this game keep the low poly style once it reaches beta or something. I just really like those types of games. 😁

Which "big boys" are you referring to...?
@@tomweiland I’m a big dog corporate shareholder sir, I work for the Company.
I really hate people who think sea of thieves invented ships and pirates. I'm really interested in your game and development now!
I'm considering making my own multiplayer pirate game, but it will be story based. I know its alot of work and will take a long time but that's my end goal at this point. I'm taking my time with it as a hobby and may have friends help develop. But you have inspired me more to keep going since you're working on something similar as an indie dev.
I mean to be fair the game _does_ look similar to Sea of Thieves in several ways. Also I think it's natural to make comparisons between new things and things we're already familiar with, so with Sea of Thieves being the single most popular pirate-themed game out there, those comparisons were kind of inevitable.
Good luck with your project :)
Will you make a VR Mode? it would be really cool!
I don't think so. I don't know much about VR, so I'm not sure what the hardware there is capable of, but I don't want to have to develop around the performance restrictions of a certain platform (which is also why I probably won't release on mobile).

Welcome to the community :)
watching youre progress inspired me to start my own Unity multi-player game. Any tips for a new coder? (well except server in Unity LOL).
PUT YOUR SERVER INTO UNITY xD
In all seriousness though, learn how to google effectively/efficiently, and most importantly, keep at it. Programming can get boring or supremely frustrating at times, and while sometimes taking breaks is necessary (and healthy), whether you push through or give up in those times is what will define whether or not you get good at it :)
@@tomweiland Another stupid question but do you recommend your own server series? because few videos ago you said you had to rewrite the all thing so maybe you have other code file you can share to use?
I've been working on a new and improved solution, but that isn't quite ready for public release yet. I'd still recommend the old series for now-upgrading should be fairly straightforward.
I liked it

Amazing project, how did you do the texture for the sky with stars (the nice one) because I am also making a game about sailing and I have problems making the night sky
I'm using 3D voronoi noise (currently runtime generated, so a texture would probably be a good idea to improve performance), but I have no idea where I originally found the implementation of it since that was quite a while ago.
@@tomweiland thanks :)
Copy of PirateGame.
Sea of Thieves update looking good so far ;)
😭
are you going to update your multiplayer tutorial series?
At some point, yes.
Do not care about these comments no, your game is getting very good and tends only to improve more over time ;p
Thanks haha :P
