    Root positions…very interesting! Thank you!

      Yes think of it like the original form of a chord. These fingers work well for notes spread over that kind of distance and then we can use other finger combos too for inversions and other chords

    I love ur lesson I have a question how do I determine what chords come next in a song I try to remember the melody but sometimes that hard

    • @PianoFromScratch
      @PianoFromScratch  Год назад

      Do you mean find out the chords to songs or memorise what you have learnt?

    In playing from a church hymnal, what is the advantage of playing chords versus playing octave/chord?

    • @PianoFromScratch
      @PianoFromScratch  Год назад

      Not quite sure I understand the question I'm afraid. Do you mean just playing chords in the right hand versus having octaves in the left hand with a chord in the right?

      @@PianoFromScratch Sorry if I didn't ask right but no, I meant playing octave and its chord in left hand and melody in right hand, a very simple left hand "stride."

    • @PianoFromScratch
      @PianoFromScratch  Год назад

      Oh I see, I think it all depends on the situation and what you’re going for, musically, neither is better. The low notes give you that depth and range to the sound, a fuller sound but you may not want that at all times in the arrangement. For example, if you play just the higher positions and then at some point add the low root notes too with the stride style pattern, you’ll feel the change kind of like the sound of the band kicking in. Another song may also work well with a just lighter sound without using any bass notes if that’s what you’re going for. Of course, roots and using other chord tones in the left hand may give you more options for rhythms.
      And in a band situation with a bass player, you may not need to use bass notes anyway. You still can though if you want to layer up the instrumentation for a ‘thicker’ texture to the sound. If there is a bass player though, you have to be careful not to overdo it. I think it’s all about creative decisions in each situation as to what works best.

      @@PianoFromScratch Now, I think we are playing in the same key! ha I had somewhat similar? thoughts but I may not be musically-inclined enough to express the thoughts in the fashion you stated!! Thanks! For one thing, I am so "root-chord" oriented that I forget the inversions, thereby surely missing many of the different musical sounds produced by using inversions, etc. Thanks again!!
