  • Lisa Gade reviews the Lenovo ThinkPad P50, a 15.6” mobile workstation with Intel quad core i7 and Xeon processors and NVIDIA Quadro M1000M and M2000M graphics. It’s the successor to the ThinkPad W541 and smaller companion to the ThinkPad P70 we reviewed, the P50 is a classic mobile workstation that’s beefy and powerful.
    ** Read our full written review here: www.mobiletechr...
    It weighs 5.8 lbs. (2.5 kg) and is 1.02” (25.9mm) thick. it’s available with FHD displays (the FHD touch screen option also supports the Lenovo ThinkPad Pro Pen, a Wacom AES pen). We have the matte, non touch 4K IPS display with wide color gamut and a built-in X-Rite Pantone calibrator on the wrist rest.
    Ours is equipped with the Intel 6th generation Skylake Xeon E3 1505M quad core, 45 watt processor clocked at 2.8 GHz, but you can save a bit of money and get it with the Intel Core i7-6700HQ quad core CPU. It has Intel WiFi AC 8260, Bluetooth, a 720p webcam and a fingerprint scanner. It has myriad ports including 1 Thunderbolt 3/USB-C Gen. 2 port, HDMI, mini DisplayPort, an SD card slot and optional 4G LTE-A WWAN. A 90 Whr battery is standard with a 170 watt quick charger. Prices range from $1,322 to $2,350.

    If this ThinkPad had the classic keyboard it would literally be the perfect ThinkPad for me. Lenovo should at least have the option to pick between classic and chicklet, since this laptop is definitely thick enough for a classic keyboard option.

I was shocked to see that the original retail 3 years ago was close to $3400!!!! and I thought luxury overpriced cars where the picture book definition of depreciation. And a quick look around and you will see thousands (not hundreds) and thousands of these 3 year old mint condition P50 Thinkpads for sale around the web. • @TheFrygar
      @TheFrygar 8 лет назад

      Yep - those 2 or the Vaio Z Flip are really the only options for a convertible (i.e. no kickstand) with good pen support and better than Intel 520 graphics power (the Iris graphics in the Z Flip are actually closer to a 940MX). P40 is the cheapest of the 3. The Yoga 14 from Best Buy can come with a 940M as well but the screen is FHD and not great.

    • @DanielRodriguez-fg5ll
      @DanielRodriguez-fg5ll 8 лет назад

      +Pollen Applebee thanks. Useful. Surface book with 16 ram and 512 at 2.6k seems excessive so I am looking for alternatives. Unfortunately Lenovo wants like 15% restocking fee so I need info review before purchasing. On the cheap side there is the hp specter x360 but pen is worse than n trig and Wacom.

    • @TheFrygar
      @TheFrygar 8 лет назад

      Daniel Rodriguez-Delgado Also remember the Spectre x360 just has the normal Intel 520 graphics integrated. If you're willing to go without a dedicated GPU (or Intel Iris) then there are several additional options such as the X1 Yoga and Yoga 460

    • @DanielRodriguez-fg5ll
      @DanielRodriguez-fg5ll 8 лет назад

      thanks. actually I was just browsing through HP website and they offer it (the 13.3) with the i7-6560 with Iris 540. if I config it to have 16ram and 512pcivme I get it to be like 1700. which is almost 1k less than the surface book. also a downside of the surface book is that basically everything is soldered. with the HP and with the P40 I assume one can swap the ssd later on.

    • @TheFrygar
      @TheFrygar 8 лет назад

      Daniel Rodriguez-Delgado Whoa! You're right...they don't even show that option on the main page with all the configurations. Seems like that's a big deal.

    Been loving your videos, so much info! Can I suggest a Dell 7710 workstation for review? I can't make my mind up between the Lenovo P70 and this. I was curious on the pros and cons between them as far as build quality, everyday use (docking/multiple monitors, 4K panels, and i7 vs Xeon), and whether Dell or Lenovo warranty and customer care. Also could I suggest one with the Quadro M5000M for comparison, and maybe test 2 512GB Samsung 950 PRO M.2s in RAID!

    I was on the lookout for a new personal laptop, and after much researching, and watching review videos, and reading reviews online, I decided to pull the trigger on the P50. Mine comes with a 6700 HQ CPU, M1000M with 4GB RAM, 16GB RAM, and a 256 NvMe hard disk. Lenovo had a thanksgiving promotion where I was able to pick this configuration up for $1050 with windows 10 Pro and a backlit keyboard. While I am generally very happy with the purchase, there are some pain points about the laptop,
    1. The 1080p display (which I went for after reading bad reviews of the 4K panel online - apparently your test of the display is not accurate enough.), is pretty bad for a workstation class laptop. The color gamut isn't great - I can see it visually when I view two photos side by side with my 2012 MBP. You give us an SD card slot, but now I can't realistically tell what my photos look like!
    2. The off-center keyboard is slightly annoying, but the keyboard feel itself is quite spectacular. I like the dedicated num-pad, since I do a lot of entering numbers on spreadsheets, but still the off-center keyboard drives me slightly nuts. The backlighting on the keyboard isn't that great either. (comparing to say a macbook pro.)
    3. The palmrest near the fingerprint scanner is definitely bulging out - a lot of people have reported cracked palmrests after some usage. I hope this doesn't happen to mine, but the panel right above the fingerprint reader is creaky.
    4. The trackpad is nowhere near as good as the macbook pro's trackpad. Sorry, should I say touchpad. (trackpad being the red button) It is definitely not glass, and isn't as smooth, or accurate as a MBP touchpad.
    5. The display aspect ratio!! The MBP has a more squarish aspect ratio which I prefer to this wider but shorter panel. More real estate for programming for instance. Extra rows are always appreciated. I did not research this carefully enough - might not have been reason to not buy the laptop, but still.

    To bad Lenovo stopped putting dedicated graphics in the weaker/cheaper thinkpads like the T line for example. I have a Thinkpad T420 with a dedicated quadro NVS 4200m and was hoping to upgrade to newer T series with dedicated graphics but that is pretty much impossible since they can only use the intel iris IGP. Pretty much forces me to spend more on something like the P50 here even tho I don't need the dedicated numpad and would rather have the trackpad and keyboard centered on the chassis.
    Ok after checking it would seem Lenovo has the T460p now with dedicated nvidia 950mx comapred to the t460, t460s, and t560 which only have as I said intel iris igp. Also noticed no touch option on the t460p while the t460s is either 1080p touch or 1440 non touch no 1080p none touch option. Looks like its going to be the t460p that replaces my older t420 at this point in time if I don't go one of those systems running an i7 4720hq and a nvidia 960 aka gaming class comapred to the buisness I currently have.
    Would it be possible for you guys to get the T460p with the i5 6440hq and a 940mx in for review?

    • @TheFrygar
      @TheFrygar 8 лет назад

      You can get a T460p with a 940MX right now. That's nowhere near the M2000M but it's not Iris.

      if you are hoping to get full quad core power, you might want to google around some reviews, I read a review on which they document that Lenovo downpowers the 45 watts CPU on the T460p, to something like 35 watts to control heat.edit I think I mean this one: www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T460p-Notebook-Review.160923.0.html

    • @Montisaquadeis
      @Montisaquadeis 8 лет назад +1

      Daniel Rodriguez-Delgado from what I have been reading HP does the same thing and besides i tend to use Throttlestop on my thinkpad t420 since it was being throttled as low as 800mhz and wasn't going up on windows 7 so yeah I would likely be using it ont he T460p as well. Also those 35watts was with just the IGP and not the dgp hence why I am asking her to do a review on the i5 6440 and nvidia 940mx version since it suppoedly has a double heatpipe compared to the single heatpipe on the igp version. Which would help with heat problems to begin with.

    Very good review as always - and in this case my experience matches! Am very satisfied with my P50 - worth speccing the ram to start with if you don't want to delve under the keyboard, lenovo's price isn't too bad. Certainly no ultrabook - but compared to the bricks of old it can be carried fairly easily. And just great to have those ports, the full keyboard, decent screen and more performance than I 'need'. Expensive but as often's the case the price is eventually forgotten when the result's so good.

    Lisa, thank you so much for this review. I have a now 6 year old Lenovo T400 and it's been the best laptop Ive ever owned.. That said, i am wondering if this computer is overkill for me as i want to be able to just work with editing photos and i want to be able to render 4k video fast for my web publishing business. That Razr Blade that's 14 inch seems like it's plenty. Am, I correct?

    • @Hiromiao

      Dude this laptop is not for u. Its for engineers who using auto cad and don't mind the extra weight or the non prefect accurate display colors. For your purposes you should be looking for a high sRGB color gamut display with a good decent GPU and processor. I would recommend getting a desktop ( Will last much longer and better proformance) but if portability is something u need, check out Asus zenbook pro uhd/Dell i7559 or (I hate to say this) Macbook Pros. Of course non of these are as heavy duty as an thinkpad but they make up for it when your printed photo looks just like your image on your display.

My main deliberation is between performance vs. mobility (comfort for my back), but it seems like this laptop actually is outperforming in some ways...?

    great review as usual thanks. I'm not sure what's the matter with Lenovo but I have a large group of folks have been waiting for this P50 and now don't want it. Why would they put out a display that only puts out 250 Nits? Do they think we all live in the closet? In addition we want a quad or 4K display touch with pen. You have to go back to the 1920 x 1080 display to get that. What's the matter with these dummies at Lenovo? Don't they want to sell anything? They're putting in great components to make it future proof, while they're already five years behind the game with their displays.

    @MobileTechReview, Lisa, would you mind running Intel's Linpack benchmark on this (and future reviews if possible) to see what the GFLOPS performance you get from the system? The Linpack benchmark really stresses the processor and generates a lot of heat, and so, for mobile workstations, it's a good benchmark to see how well the system can perform in terms of processing and cooling.

    Great review...Are the Lenovo Y700 series 15.6 displays accurate with colors also? Looking for accurate colors on a little more budget friendly Laptop to do photo editing using Adobe Lightroom. Any recommendations? All advice welcome. Thanks.

      Uptown Wedding Photography NJ probably too late st this point. But this computer is a bit of an overkill for Lightroom or photoshop :) screen requires calibration and from all
      I gathered it is certainly not a selling point.

    Everything would be fine and could justify the price if there was a removable processor, and here BGA soldered to the board

    Hi Lisa! what are your thoughts if that target work is desktop publishing - Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and even MS Visio and Publisher? will M1000M provide enough juice or the price increment on the M2000M is worth the boost it provides?

    I have a question. I am of the theory that for average consumer the i7 with Intel Pro Graphics is more powerful than the Xeon and then the popular 6700 simply because as the CPU can use the eRAM for the Iris as L4 cache. Would you agree?

    • @DanielRodriguez-fg5ll

      I think the main benefit of the Xeon is to be able to use ECC memory, but I could be wrong. After all my brain memory is not ECC!

    • @ModernClassic
      @ModernClassic 8 лет назад

      ECC is why I went with the Xeon. My last laptop (Dell XPS 15) crashed constantly; I wanted to do all I could to minimize that possibility. My P50 has not crashed once, for any reason. I think the Xeon is only something like a $50 upgrade over the i7-6820HQ; for me that was worth it just to get ECC.

    Just to clarify, can you boot from the second M.2 ssd and also the 2.5” drive if you wanted to dual/multi-boot Linux OS’s on separate drives?
    Also if using an external monitor via any of the HDMI/display/thunderbolt ports will the graphics render using the laptops discrete graphics card or just the integrated graphics in the cpu? I want to confirm because apparently the W541 only gave integrated graphics on an external monitor
    Thanks

      We work with the manufacturers and what we review is often dependent on what they have available for review (they send us loaners). Lenovo doesn't have a review program for the P40 yet.

      quadro mobile, or even quadro desktop only makes sense if you need ISV certification for your apps; if you main job depends on the stability of your video card, I will definitely pay the quadro premium. otherwise, it makes little sense.

    Fantastic video Lisa. You should add to your review how terrible Lenovo customer service is. I have ordered the P50 because of this video and I am going through the worst customer service experience of my life.
    NEVER and I say NEVER purchase anything from Lenovo before you google Lenovo Customers Service problems/ horror stories etc. Go on reddit and check what people are saying. I have wasted time and money for a product that I will probably never receive.
    Just terrible, and I am writing this on a Lenovo machine.
