  • Lisa Gade reviews the Lenovo ThinkPad P53, a 15.6” mobile workstation that’s extremely powerful and upgradable. The laptop is available with Intel 9th gen Core i5, i7 and i9 processors and the Intel Xeon 8-core E-2276M CPU. It ships with NVIDIA Quadro graphics, at the low end the T1000/T2000 and at the upper end there’s the Quadro RTX 3000, RTX 4000 Max-Q and RTX 5000 Max-Q with 16GB DDR6 VRAM. It’s currently the only 15” mobile workstation with the Quadro RTX 5000, which is the model we have for review. The ThinkPad is available with full HD and 4K UHD displays, including a 4K OLED option. The P53 is designed for 2D and 3D CAD, modeling, architecture and 3D rendering.

    OLED tends to shift and lose color accuracy when changing brightness. Reducing the highest brightness level helps to retain the consistency.

      R.a. Wheeler I have had Dell laptops for the past 20 years. But the Dell Precision laptop (5510) runs too hot due to its slim chassis. Thermals are bad and even with the latest 15” model, it hasn’t really improved. Also drivers are bad and I have lots of issues with the Dell Docks (D3100, WD15 and TB15/TB16). My next laptop will probably be a Lenovo in this series. The only drawback is the numpad that causes the keyboard to be asymmetric.

    • @PearComputingDevices
      @PearComputingDevices 4 года назад

      @@RamonDeKlein I love the XPS line, but for some reason Dell has really cheaped out the cooling on them. I have a Latitude 5491 with a 6 core and Nvidia graphics. The thing is a 14 inch beast. But like the XPS 15 it throttles. Even after using new paste and shims. It's still better than a Macbook pro, but it's not what it could be. Especially if I am using my TB16 thunderbolt dock. For whatever reason them two don't seem to play well together. The fans will just blast away. It's a little heater. I don't think it's strictly Dell. It's this push for thinner and lighter laptops. But when your sticking that kind of hardware in there... I mean it's still a 14mn cpu. These things produce a lot of heat under stress. For my $2100 bucks I expected better. I was only $400 or so off from moving up to a precision 7530. I probably should have pulled the trigger in retrospect. But I really wanted to keep with a 14 inch footprint. My 5470 before it never had these problems at all, but to be fair that was only a quad core with Radeon graphics and it didn't have thunderbolt. I used the traditional doc with it.

    Thanks for the comprehensive review. It was extremely helpful.
    For those planning on installing your own additional SATA connected hard drive call Lenovo first. The SATA connector is not included when configured online and you will have to order their hard drive installation kit. Which is a easy and clean install for any basic PC technician. Ordered mine with the basic Quadro T1000 and 512GB SSD drive, 500 nit screen and 16 GB for video and photo editing. I was way overdue for an upgrade. Added another 16GB and the Crucial MX500 2TB SATA SSD drive. Other than having to order and install the hard drive installation kit and having to disable the touch pad so it doesn't interfere when using the TrackPoint; I couldn't be any happier. With the X390 as my ultra portable and my old E545 as a print server I now have a legitimate high speed wireless network to boot.
    On a final note the P53 FHD 500 nit screen is gorgeous.

    The computer overall is impressive. It is very customizable. The only real drawbacks I can find are the sound (which isn't bad by any means) and the weight (which can be overlooked after you adjust). Otherwise, it's a very powerful machine with an awesome keyboard, finger scanner, and the lovely Cortana.

    I have a P50 and still love it - it has been a real workhorse, easily equivalent to my original IBM ThinkPads. People talk about how Lenovo's ThinkPads aren't as good, but you get what you pay for - the high-end ThinkPads are as good as they ever were (and no less expensive). My only disappointment with the P50 is that the 4K screen, while amazing in every other way, was never all that bright and has gotten even dimmer over the years. But it seems like that's fixed in the newer models.

    • @Miaou12
      @Miaou12 4 года назад +1

      Time will tell...especially on the OLED touch screens, many bad feedback about them so far. I'll stick on the "classic" FHD IPS for the moment, as they are time-tested technology. But you're right about brightness improvements, we can now comfortably use those new laptops under sunlight :)

      Had this for a year now, use the autodesk suite as well as Archicad. I've found it manages heat very well, fans are very quiet, occasionally kicking up if I'm rendering or doing some heavy duty work. The bottom gets warm sometimes but not hot, and even then not consistently warm.
      This is for a regular amount of use , not constant office work.

    I'm about to return my really hot P1 Gen 2 for the P53. What I'm really hesitant about is a dock. Lenovo recommends the 40AN0170US but reviews on it and the 230 W dock are atrocious. I have never worried about a dock until these external blocks. My HP ZBook connected via a Thunderbolt G2 dock and I never knew if 1, 2, or none of my displays would work or how to bring them back consistently if I did lose them. I'd also lose the audio. Lisa - you have any recommendations? Could I use a non-Lenovo dock?

    Make jokes all you want. At least these are upgradable and fixable. The thin notebooks might look nice, but if anything goes wrong it's trash. If you can even open it without destroying it, you'll find everything soldered on and not replaceable. I have given up on the thin, pretty models. It's off- lease Lenovos from here on in. I'll probably get one of these in about 5 years and it will still have 5-10 years of useful life.

      @@avgonyma1 First I would get clarity on the type of data science projects to run. Then would Google for the minimum hardware recommendation for those projects. That would determine my base minimum budget. Then I would decide my max budget based on base budget. I would compile the list of all the known brands that configure the workstations for data science projects (e.g. www.lenovo.com/us/en/think-workstations/artificial-intelligence-industry/c/artificial-intelligence-industry). Then I would rank them by price and the value / configuration. Normally I fix the CPU and GPU and go for minimum RAM and lowest hard disk config. I buy them separately and upgrade it myself.

    I do lots of programming for supercomputers and a significant amount of AI as well - and my eyesight isn't all that good anymore, so I got the p73 without the touchscreen, but with 128 GB RAM, 2 2TB SSD and one 2 TB spinning (6 TB total - as much as will fit on the machine), and the i9-9880H. Unfortunately, when doing anything significant, the temperature rockets up to where it's throttling. I'm running Linux Mint, and I've already got it on a 4-fan cooling pad. Any suggestions for more cooling? It's on 57 C right now and all I'm doing is watching your review.

      Try undervolting. If that doesn't work, then redoing the thermal paste might be your last resort.

    How about the graphic card? Is it upgradable as well? If you buy this unit with nvidia T1000 4gb card then you want to upgrade it to rtx 5000 would that be possible?

      You can't upgrade a laptop gpu nor a cpu, this would involve some skilly tweaks and change on the cooling system. Moreover you have little to no chance to find a retailed laptop graphic card on the market (maybe ebay) since they are meant to be sold to manufacturers only.
