- We've taken the Yokohama Geolandar X-AT G016 around the block for over 10,000K's. Playing around in mud, sand, on the farm & highway to see how the Yokohama X-AT's hold up.
These tyres are designed as a balance between mud terrain tyres and all terrain tyres. Essentially making it a mud tyre in a business suit.
Let's see how the Yokohama Geolandar X-AT G016 went during our long term review.

- Gudday, Jared from Tyre Review here, and I've spent the last 10,000 Ks on the Yokohama X-AT, that's the GO16 for those playing along at home. And we brought it up here because this is where it belongs. We're on a muddy track, and we've just got to the top of the thing and driven through a puddle that's right there. It's a bit bigger than your average puddle.
The GO16 it's an interesting beast. It's halfway between the all terrain and mud terrain. So, at the start, before I actually started driving on this tyre, I actually spent a little while on the mud terrain, just to give it a bit of a balance because I've used the all terrain before, but I hadn't used the Yokohama mud terrain.
And one of the things that I noticed about the mud terrain is it's the same as most mud terrains is that you can feel at low speeds. You can feel the tread prints and you can hear it at the highest speeds. And I was curious to see if the GO16 which is again, it's halfway between. So and it's also got the three ply carcass, which is very similar to the mud terrain tyre, but it's got a more all terrain tyre inspired tread pattern where you've actually got these sipes here, that are wider.
So you're actually gonna be better off road, but they've actually got a denser packed tread block in the middle. So I really wanted to see what characteristics they pulled from the all-terrain and what characteristics they pulled from the mud terrain. And I've gotta say, I'm impressed with them off road. I can get dirty and I had some fairly serious little spots coming up here and we've taken them in the snow and that sort of thing before. They get dirty no problem. It's more on the road where I want to sort of talk about this a little bit more.
So I'll get back in the car and we'll go for a drive down the hill and we'll talk to you again on the road. So we're on the gravel now, and these tyres also perform really well on the gravel. Like they're surefooted and I tend to drive fast as you know, and oh, sorry to the speed limit, and they're certainly well and truly capable of keeping up with me on that, and they're also really good on the blacktop.
The only spots that I've found, where they, are not quite keeping in mind that these are an aggressive all-terrain or at time mud terrain, depending on hey, look at it, almost think of it as a, like they've taken the mud tyre and actually stuck it into a business suit or at least a polo shirt so that, it's a mud tyre carcass with the all-terrain tyre grip. but in the wet, they sort of exhibit a little bit of the characteristics of a mud tyre and a little bit of the characteristics of an all terrain tyre.
So they've actually got a little bit of the mud tyre under steer, a little bit of the all-terrain tyre oversteer, so around a round about you can lose the tyre a little bit if you're going a little bit too quickly. You can lose the nose a little bit if you're going, if you're not putting your weight in the right place. So just be a little bit careful there. So drive to the conditions as you should be doing anyway, you shouldn't be driving like a nit like me, and also dry traction is just slightly down.
And so I noticed on some quick corners, but also if you're doing a quick turn on the bitumen, then you may find that they're just not quite holding on as well as an all terrain would, but again, these are mud tyres in a business suit so what do you expect? But otherwise great tyre, can't see any real problems with them. They perform fantastically.
And what I would probably recommend these tyres for is actually for the traditional Overlander. So have people who might be driving around the country, who would normally choose a noisy mud terrain tyre. Choose these, because these are the mud tyre carcass, but they've actually got a grip or trip patent that actually has some good grip, but it's still well and truly comfortable on the road and is not noisy.
There is perhaps a little bit of tyre whine that you might notice at around about 80 sort of Ks or that's what I got. But that's not noticeable. And for the trade off that you get for a tyre like this, it's totally worth it. So that's my review. The GO16 X-AT from Yokohama. Thanks, y'all.

Review is very accurate. They are wearing fine, lots of tread left.
Off-road, haven't had any real issues. They are aggressive for an AT, but the gap between the tread blocks is not massive/not as great as a muddie for stone ejection - so stuff does get stuck in the pattern regularly. However they are surprisingly grippy, more than you'd think. Very clever tread pattern, overall great design.
On-road, like the review says, definitely have to watch out when going on roundabouts in the wet , I get lots of understeer, depending on speed/angle. Can be gnarly!

By far the best review I have seen of this model. Lat time I bought tires I went with a similar competitor because they went on sale for an absurd price, but I've been doing my best to thrash them so I can get these instead. So far we've had the old AT and the MT in my house and they've treated us very, very well in desert, rocks, snow, mud, and highway but having the in-between will really be the ticket for me.
Thanks mate! The thing to think about, and I've spoken to Yokohama about this since this film was produced, us that they are certainly more an off road tyre than a daily driver tyre. They're a bit skittish in the wet, and have some noise to them, but they will still give you that best-of-both-worlds option when you're heading off the black stuff 👍 ~Jared

Another great review, curious to pull on the on road wet grip compared to the competition... so simply, worse than the Nitto RG and the MT Baja Boss AT in this area?

Is the g016 better on road, silent and better fuel consumption than the g015????
If you had a 1/2 ton truck and MT or XT didnt matter would you recommend the Yokos XTs or the General Grabber X3? X3 will be louder but they are built solid. Xpedition Overland swears by them but also is sponsored by General Tire. This would be for a 23 Tundra TRD used for overlanding and daily drive but low miles (8Ks a year).
Are these snow rated? I've been using the GO15 AT's in the snow and they performed great! Just in case Australia freezes up in an ice age due to you know...climate change!😁
We like to drive tracks locally and do some overlanding. After watching a ton of your videos I guess we'll settle on these G016's. Have had Yokohama A/T (G015) and M/T on our last 2 vehicles and I liked them both. But damn they're expensive. Do you have any opinion on the Federal Xplora RT? It looks like they are trying to blur the line between A/T and M/T as well.

How do these wheels stack up against the BF Goodrichs K02s or the Wildpeak AT3s?
I talked to a man last week who had these on his ford F250. He's had the 2 you mentioned plus a set of nitto mud grapplers within the last couple years and he says these are better in every single category and condition than those three. No exceptions. Snow, mud, noise, rocks, treadlife, the best he's ever had for an all terrain tire.
I've had wildpeak AT3, the yoko g015 (old AT) and the g003 (MT), and both yokos were much better in bad or normal conditions than the wildpeaks and last a lot longer. The wildpeaks were quieter, that was the only thing they did better. But the guy I metioned says the g016 are the quietest tires he's ever had, so they even fixed that problem.
I put these on my TJ last year. Great during summer and off road, not so good in the winter here in the frozen tundra.
Hey mate, that correlates with my experiences here in the wet. Good feedback that they don't deal well in the cold, though!
How do they compare to the MT Baja Boss AT? For off roading which do you think is better? Thanks.

Thought you did a long term review for Pirelli AT+ before. Which one would you rate better off-road especially in the mud, this or the Pirelli at+? Thanks.
I really rated the Pirelli AT+, and they performed really well off road as well as on road, however for the specific mud component I'd tip the had to the G016 as they have bigger voids for evacuating mud. The G016 is also a heavier built tyre, so might be better, depending on your intended purpose.

Probably comes down to the driving I intend on doing. Outback trip, I'd lean towards the G016's, whereas the AT3Ws are better in the wet, so might be better for daily driving, depending on what type of tracks I do of a weekend, and how often 👍
@@TyreReviewVideos I went to a bob jane and they had also suggested that the g016's were also just as capable in wet weather compared to the at3's.. I'm tossing between the 2 as I'd need to change tyres soon. I'm more of a weekend warrior but willing to take the road less travelled and try the g016's as they're a newish design. Although in the 90s prado group I'm in, the falken are highly rated!

For a 2020 Power Wagon, would you recommend this tire or the Maxxis Razr AT? I hardcore offroad once every 2-6 months, use as a daily driver as well, but my truck is also used on the farm daily (light offroading) and haul/tow regularly. I want a Hybrid design like this, the Maxxis Razr AT, Nitto RG, or Toyo RT. Whats your thoughts?
I reckon you wouldn't lose with going either way. Try one first, then go with the other next, unless a better option comes up. From my experience I really enjoyed the RG, but others have put the RAZR ahead of that. I'd probably check in on what other full size pickup folks have been experiencing with these as well, as that can have an impact - your bus is a bit bigger than my Ranger!
What would be better on the beach go15 or go16

Ooooh, that's a tough one. I reckon the Wildpeak would probably last longer than these, and from memory they're both roughly the same in the wet once they get some wear on them. I think if it comes down to it, you *should* be able to get the Wildpeaks at a good price if you can find a Four for Three sale, which I know happens a few times a year.
That said, I'd probably go the X-AT if I was going to go proper outback touring, as it's a three ply sidewall.

Hi mate, it's interesting, as they're similar, but actually quite different tyres. The X-ATs would be my choice between those two for a round the country jaunt, as they're tough as nails and long lasting. The RAZR AT would be my choice for daily use and weekend 4x4, as they're better in the wet and a great tyre, but they don't quite last as long. It really comes down to your intended purpose, and the vehicle you're fitting it on. Hope that helps!
@@TyreReviewVideos thanks, didn’t think the Yokos were long lasting but great insights, I find the Razr also tough as nails, if I get 60k kms that would be okay for the overall performance.
I've heard multiple reports of the X-ATs doing laps and looking like new, which is excellent. When I gave them a thrashing I was heading towards around 66k kms out of them, so perhaps a little more than what you're looking at out of the Razrs. With the Razrs I was heading towards 48k kms. Again, both are awesome tyres for the purpose.

Hey mate! Kinda different tyres for different purposes, really. The G016 has three ply sidewalls, more aggressive tread etc, so will be less comfortable, but tougher off road, whereas the AT3 XLT is a reasonably aggressive AT with 2 ply sidewalls, and it's really comfortable and quiet on the road. If it's for a family bus that ventures onto the trails, then I'd go the Cooper. If it's for more aggressive off roading or a lap around the country, then the Yoki's are a pretty good proposition 👍

How would you compare these directly to the G015s? Looking at getting those or these tires in a 285/70R17 on my diesel truck that seems mild off-road use and camping/towing as well.
I think you'd probably do well with both. For mild offroad and towing the G015 is probably more suited, as you won't be needing the tougher casing that the 16 has, provided the 15 is suitably rated to the weight of your truck. If you were doing more offroad, or were worried about punctures more, then the 16 might make more sense. It might come down to the looks you prefer between the two, as well 👍

Hey Bryce, I'm only a couple of thousand k's into testing the BB AT, but they're pretty comparable so far. The BBAT is more aggressive, although it's actually better in the wet and dry so far. Interesting thing to watch will be how they last, mileage wise, as well as cut/chip wise 👍

Do you notice a difference in mpg or kpl? I have some crappy mud terrains in 35s and want to improve mpg in my tundra. Looking between these and the AT. What would you recommend?
Hi mate, I think the key thing that would influence your fuel usage would be the weight of the tyres. I'd look at what you're currently running and the weight of them, vs the X-ATs vs the ATs in the same size. If you don't need a three ply sidewall and aggressive tread, you'll definitely save some fuel with the ATs, while the X-ATs (I'm guessing) will be similar to the MTs in weight, so the only saving there will be the less aggressive tread. As 35" tyres are so big, the weight can vary widely from tread pattern to tread pattern, and between brands. Hope that helps!
@@TyreReviewVideos thanks for the response! It appears the AT would be about 10 lbs less so I assume between a much less aggressive tread and lighter weight it should help significantly. The current tire is a Atturo trail blade MT 35x12.5r20. Put on by whoever owned it before. Rides ok but is extremely noisy and my highway mpgs are terrible. The Tundra doesn’t need any assistance getting bad mpg. Thanks again!
No wuz! I'm sure every little bit helps, but I'd be curious to know how much it reduces your MPG, so swing back when you've done a few miles 👍
Sounds like the Atturos might not have been rotated, either. Keep in mind that doing that every 5000 miles or so (basically every service) will keep em quiet and make them last longer.
Hi Jared, thanks for the great review on the G016's. I am now considering them in 285/70R17 for my 100 series 'Cruiser (or maybe even 295/70R17 if they will go on). Most of my off-roading is on the beaches/islands around SEQ and I found the standard Grandtrek AT22's to be great in the soft sand (mostly 20 psi and then drop to say 12psi for bad sections) but not so great on inland trails where tree roots are more common. I'm keen to ask how the G016's would handle the soft sandy tracks like what Fraser & Moreton Island can throw up when its hot and dry? Cheers for your help!
Hey John, thanks for the feedback! The thing to be conscious of is that you'll need to lower your pressures more with the G016's as they're a three ply sidewall, whereas the AT22's would have been only two ply. So because they're stiffer, it'll take more to bag them out, so, depending on how low you go, you'll need to perhaps be a little more careful when driving in the sand so you don't de-bead them. There's probably a video in this, I think 👍

Nice review. I'm planning on getting a set for my Paj. What are they like for fuel consumption? Did you notice a difference?
I've never heard of a Spacegoat owning a Pajero, so that's flippin' amazing! They're a bit on the heavier side, given that they're a three ply carcass, and heavy duty, and with this type of tyre I generally noticed that they put another litre per 100km onto the fuel figures. I guess that's the trade-off for the extra grip and protection they offer, though. ~Jared

The tyres don't cause understeer or oversteer, that would be the driver input. Would be better to talk about the adhesion in the wet rather than use driving terms that really don't relate to the tyre. It's a ute with no weight in the rear, of course, it will lose traction around a tight corner in the wet if you drive it that way.
Hey Stewart, thanks for the feedback, it's always interesting to hear other points of view, and think about how we can chat clearly about the ideas that we're trying to communicate. I would disagree that tyres don't cause understeer or oversteer. If different tread patterns perform differently under the same driver input and similar conditions, then it's the tyres causing the difference. For sure, you can always drive to the conditions, but for the interest of the testing it's interesting to know if a driver will lose traction at lower speeds with some tyres and not with others. For instance I've noticed a wide difference between tyres like the X-AT in this video, versus something like the Nitto Ridge Grappler, which, while it's in a similar category (aggressive AT), under similar circumstances holds on in roundabouts.
In terms of speaking about adhesion in the wet, we try and use terms that make sense to the common person, making it more accessible to all the folks that are coming into the tyre market with little knowledge. I'd be keen to understand what your thoughts are around that angle.

@@TyreReviewVideos Thanks for the acknowledgement, the issue with that terminology assuming you have the same tyres front and rear (so all things being equal), it's not a tyre issue causing front loss of grip (understeer) or rear loss of grip (oversteer) as if it is tyre-related all tyres would lose grip simultaneously (all-wheel drift). That is clearly a driver input issue, 100%. We are not even trying to be smartarses here, just help educate. What you could say, is the tyres lost grip easier when we pushed it into a corner over the AT15 resulting in an understeer or oversteer situation, that compares the tyres in the same situation and is a relevant outcome conclusion. Having been involved in Motor and Wheels magazine tyres tests for years as facilitators we appreciate these kinds of reviews as they are helpful for people to understand what they are buying. Hopefully, our input helps with terminology in the future. Keep up the great work, we are going to subscribe ;-)

Hi mate, I didn't get a chance to test them on soft sand, but as they've got a three ply sidewall you'd have to let them down further than a regular AT. Their tread is more aggressive as well, but that shouldn't hinder too much.

Hi mate, there's a little scrubbing on full lock on the left, but I think that may be because the inner guard was never really tied back properly after the install of the front bar. It's got a 2" tough dog lift with a small strut spacer, and I think it may have sagged a little since it was first installed. The wheels are +25 17x9 👍

Mate great quick review thanks. Looking at these instead of Nitto ridge grapplers due to no stock currently. Can you tell me, when we say 3ply construction is that across the tread carcass like good muddy/LT tyres or is it just the sidewalls. Want to make sure good puncture protection is there.
Hey Jase, they're not too different from the Ridgeys, just not quite as good in the wet, dry traction is slightly off, and they do make a touch more noise in daily driving. You won't go far wrong, though! So these will be 3 ply on the side wall, then (from memory) I think they're something like 7 ply on the face, perhaps more, but they share a fair bit in common with the MT, which has up to 11 plies, depending on the load rating you choose. The good thing about the XAT is that they have a bit of extra tread plies turned up over the shoulder, so you've got a bit more protection there 👍
Nice Review! My question, though.... I understand this is a hybrid between the Yokohama all terrain and mud terrain tires. Do you think they are a step up in aggressiveness vs other all terrains? It looks like Yokohama all terrains are a bit mild compared to other brands. It's hard to tell by the looks of them. For example, is this actually more aggressive than a BFG KO2? Thanks.
Simple answer Yes, they would be the most aggressive AT on the market if they were in that specific category. I just fitted these and they are brilliant , didn't notice much, if anything in louder road noise either.
