Welcome to the world of Porcupine Tree - this was only a taste of how awesome they are. Definitely check out Arriving Somewhere But Not Here, Anasthetize, Trains, Blackest Eyes, Sound of Muzak, Dignity, Never Have, Herd Culling....list goes on!

Man this is a mine of pure gold, just keep digging. ‘Arriving somewhere but not here’, ‘Trains’, ‘Fear of a Blank Planet’, ‘The start of something Beautiful’, ‘Hatesong’, ‘Anesthetise’, ‘ Lazarus’, Heart attack in a lay-by’ the list of brilliance goes on and on. They also just released a new album after a 13 year hiatus so you may want to check out some tracks from ‘Closure/Continuation’

Drummer is Gavin Harrison, discovered this band fairly recently through the album In Absentia, amazing can't believe I'd never heard of them before

Please stick with them. Steven Wilson is a musical genius and I don’t even consider myself a prog rock fan. I think you should react to Blackest Eyes.

  • @craigcondon2035

A couple of initial Porcupine Tree suggestions would be Arriving Somewhere But Not Here or Blackest Eyes. One of my favorites is She’s Moved On.

Routine, Drive, Refuge and Personal Shopper are great songs by Steven Wilson, the singer singwriter of Porcupine Tree

Perhaps the best rabbit hole of all (plus Steven Wilson’s solo stuff). I would second the mentions of Anesthetize live in Tilburg.

This is one of those bands whose name I'd heard, but I'd never heard any of their songs. I never really looked into them because (a) I never knew what to expect and I used to be a music snob until a few years ago and (b) there's just so much music out there that it's nigh on impossible to get to it all. That being said, I liked this song a lot. Good work on bringing good music to the masses, my friend!

Cool reaction, man ! You seem like a really chill guy :) This band and its front man, Steven Wilson, are both extremely prolific, versatile and *good.* Or, to put it differently, there's a shitload of material, at least 80% of it is absolutely brilliant, and almost each of these tracks stands out from the rest in some way and to a significant degree, so that you _have_ to listen to them.
This makes it _very_ difficult to pick a reasonable number of songs to suggest. You'll experience something completely different if you listen to Normal or Anesthetize, or Fadeaway, or Smiling Not Smiling, or...
    Halo
    Nine Cats
    In Formaldehyde
    Darkmatter
    Lazarus
    Stars Die
    Waiting
    Always Never
    Arriving Somewhere But Not Here
    The Sky Moves Sideways
    Even Less
    Where We Would Be
    Yellow Hedgerow Dreamscape
    My Ashes
    Start of Something Beautiful
    Shesmovedon
    Black Dahlia
    Russia on Ice
It Will Rain for A Million Years
    Don't Hate Me
    Time Flies
    Mellotron Scratch
    Begonia Seduction Scene
    Remember Me Lover
    Stop Swimming
    Pure Narcotics
    Stranger by the Minute
    Rainy Taxi
Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth Before It Is Recycled
    Lips of Ashes
    Mute
    Buying New Soul
    How Is Your Life Today?
    Voyage 34
    Blackest Eye
    Drown With Me
    Radioactive Toy
    Heartattack in a Layby
    Chloroform
    Trains
    I Drive the Hearse
    A Smart Kid...
There's really trippy, psychedelic stuff in there, there's prog metal, popish stuff, ambiant music, pure prog rock and so on. And that's only a glimpse at _my_ favorite parts of Porcupine Tree's main catalog. Although they're a bit less extensive, Wilson's solo work and side projects are equally good, albeit different. If you like what he does, you're in for hours upon hours upon hours of eargasmic music :)

Brilliant band! Just released a new album, too ( first in 12 years or so ). Steve Wilson (singer / guitar / songwriter / producer ) has a ton of excellent solo stuff, as well ( check out a track called Drive Home ). Steve has done some production work for a Swedish band called Opeth. You might dig some Opeth, too ( check their live at Red Rocks video of a track called Ghost of Perdition ). Gavin Harrison ( drummer ) also plays with a band called Pineapple Thief. They have some good stuff, too. So much great music out there. Enjoy!

Enjoyed your reactions. My favorite band. I love this song but it's like my 50th favorite by them lol. The song that got me into them is Anesthesize which is like 18 minutes of a heavier version of this. Other than that I would recommend checking out Hatesong or Russia on Ice as a next step into the PT universe

You are about to go on a great musical journey, I predict. My suggestion is choose live versions where possible. The studio versions are incredible but, with a few exceptions, the live versions outdo even them.

    Broooooooooooo…. Let’s gooooooo!
Happy you took a chance! There are some good suggestions in the comments already. I recommend Way out of Here live… Gavin Harrison is the best drummer alive. THEN…. you may be ready for Anesthetize live…. A BANGER and the reason I became a super fan

    • @helenespaulding7562

Gavin is outstanding…but really? Better than Danny Carey?

    • @jaypalmer7349
      @jaypalmer7349 2 года назад

@@helenespaulding7562 Danny is one of the greats… but Gavin can play anything including tool. He was trained initially in jazz. He has written many books on drumming theory. I have played drums since 1982, I’ve never heard someone with the ceiling of ability as high as Gavin.
Danny is a MONSTER at what he does. True legend. One of the most instantly recognizable sounds in all of music. Respect to him in droves!

I love watching someone experience PT for the first time. I did it myself about 18 months ago. They are possibly the greatest band that almost nobody has ever heard of.
You should just dive right in and react to their magnum opus - "Anesthetize", live from Tilburg. It's the shortest 17 1/2 minutes of music I've ever experienced.
I feel like you would really like "The Start of Something Beautiful", live from Chicago.

You might like some of Opeth's more softish songs. Porcupine Tree and Opeth are closely related, often helping eachother in the studio with recordings, guesting on songs together and even did a solo concept album together. Opeth used to be pretty groove and hook based before going full blown 70's prog. A song that comes to mind that might be worth your time from them is 'To Rid the Disease'. One of the songs released by them before their change to a more 70's frantic prog sound.

I wonder if you'd be interested in giving a listen to one of the best southern rock blues bands you'll ever listen too. "The Allman Brothers Band - Statesboro Blues (at the Fillmore East, 1971)" this band is from Jacksonville FL. and the founding members were brothers Duane Allman and Gregg Allman, Duane was lead guitarist and Gregg was lead singer and keyboardist as well as Dickey Betts also lead guitarist, Berry Oakley Bassist, Butch Trucks and Jai Jaimoe" Johanson Drums. Duane Allman was the Master of the Southern Slide, which is a style of playing that made him iconic to this day. I look forward to hearing what you think🔥🎸💖✌🎶🤗

They remind me of a harder version of Pink Floyd. Speaking of which you gotta see Comfortably Numb from 1994 Pulse concert ,epic!! One of the best guitar solos ever and one of the best light shows too.

    My suggestions for Porcupine Tree:
    Fear of a Blank Planet
    Even Less
    Hatesong
But seriously Bro! Try Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water. A lot of people call it an anthem of Hard Rock.

  • @johncassidy3071

Haven't seen too many do Halo off of Deadwing. One of my favorites off of DW. And Hatesong would be a good one too.
But it's hard to go wrong with anything from Stupid Dream to Fear of a Blank Planet.
