Sadly Paul Fusco (creator, puppedmaster and ALF´s voice) never allowed anybody of the crew to film or took pics of the set (trapdoors) and the ALF pupped and how it works. - to keep the Ilusion of ALF is real alive. They don´t even had a studio Audience, they used canned laughter ;)
But in one Episode they show the trapdoor near the sofa, when the floor underneath the sofa is collapsing, you can see into the "basement" which is actually one of the trapdoors.

They were shooting for longer days than any other sitcoms due to technical requirements (reason also why there was no studio audience). It was hard on everyone including the human actors, specially those more used to traditional schedules and quicker turnarounds like Wright.

ALF was difficult to tape due to having work around the puppeteers and etc. tapings often ran VERY long often taking more than 24 hours for one show, the set had a bunch of trap doors for the puppeteers and it took 3 of them to work ALF so there were often mistakes and things had to be re-shot.
Max Wright didn't like having to play 2nd banana to an inanimate object, Supposedly one day he even attacked ALF and had to be restrained. Andrea Elson was battling an eating disorder during the 2nd season
I'm sure they had moments they enjoyed it. but overall I can understand why they would hate it.

Maybe if he hadn't fallen into the bizarre, self destructive lifestyle he lived through the 90s and early 2000s things would have been different. I don't know of anyone who loved this show who didn't also love Willie Tanner, who was such a lovable doofus of a dad. Too bad Max apparently never realized that.

So it was good that to break the possible tension they'd have some fun with each other and lighten up the atmosphere. A classic example of this as well is the outtakes from the original Dallas.

@Chakita No they had a puppeteer like Jim Henson. The puppeteer for ALF was Paul Fusco and he played the voice. They had an entire team to work on ALF. A 30 minute episode would take 20 hours to do. Look it up.

"While a puppet was usually used for ALF, there were some shots of the tiny alien running or walking around. This was accomplished by actor Michu Meszaros wearing an ALF costume." This is what I meant.
And I sincerely hope your 'look it up' statement was in reference to the ALF episode where the family goes on holiday and ALF is trapped by hunters.

R.I.P. Max Wright. ALF was a very great comedy show at that time.

I heard that the cast actually hated alf. To the point where willie left the set on the last day of shooting. Not going to the cast party or even saying goodbye

Paul Fusco said he still talked to him and Anne (Kate). Howewer, I think he might have been a bit mad about Alf being the star of the show, but then again, it IS his show.
