    Love the silver hat. Abandoned for two weeks. Better chance of starting than DNR503K, now about12 years sitting in the garage. Just as an aside I saw an ad for a certain rust preventive treatment. For the last month the algorithm has bombarded me with ads for that product such that, now WOULD NOT BUY it if it was the last product on earth. Me, bolshy sod or what?

    Brings back memories of my first car. A 1978 Viva HC.
    The fact that you have a whine on the clutch and that squeal when you engage it sounds a lot like a failing thrust bearing which is the cuff on the input shaft that presses against the pressure plate and depresses the splines releasing pressure on the friction plate.
    The whine and that squeal is the noise of the rollers in the bearing race that comes into contact with the splines on the pressure plate as they shift in their cage.
    The good news is that it's dead easy to swap out.
    Put the car in the air, undo the gearstick inside the car. Take out the driveshaft. Put a jack under the gearbox on the cross-brace. Undo the bolts that attach the gearbox to the block and then the four bolts that fix the cross brace to the chassis then slide back and lower the gearbox. Unhook the fork arm that your clutch cable is attached to and slide it inwards to disengage it's lugs from the bearing's collar and the thrust bearing slides off the input shaft into your hand.
    If I remember correctly it shouldn't take more than an hour to do with worst bit being getting to the bolts at the top of the bell housing up against the bulkhead so it might be worth undoing those two from above while the car is still on the ground.
    It takes a bit of wiggling to get the gearbox free because it is sat on location pins but you don't need to realign the clutch when putting it back together if you don't disturb the clutch plate and pressure plate when it is disassembled.
    Reassembly is therefore pretty much the reverse of removal.

    • @RetroRebuild
      @RetroRebuild  Год назад

      I've had the gearbox off before mate, it's a new clutch kit in the viva 👍

    People will always support you with your projectand your channel because you're a humble and down-to-earth bloke, and they will do it willingly and freely, not expecting anything in return.
    The others can f*ck off! 😂
    Glad to see the Viva is still firing up nicely - the sound of that engine is akin to clockwork... beautiful sounding for a car that's almost as old as i am!

    Steve, I think base plate has gone on your dizzy the way the points keep closing, you could try a self tapper and washer or use one of other dizzy. I don't think they are much to buy new. If your oil pump dizzy is central pick up and not the early off set type. You could put a Bosch dizzy on, which is on later chevette and are better. But you dizzy pick up has to be central. Hope this makes sense. Cheers mate.

    Getting better in small steps every time. BTW my fuel filter is vertical on my car (1969 Rover V8) and it works just fine. It doesn’t fill right up. I put in electric fuel pump and electric ignition and it made a big difference. Electric ignition is just a swap over module for the points. Also installed inertia cut off switch for the electric fuel pump - easy job. Gunson colourtune is a great device for checking mixture.

    I noticed that the hose from the combined oil filler / crankcase filter doesn't seem to be connected to anything? This ,combined with the fact that no airbox is fitted can mess up the idle mixture ( depending on the breather setup on that particular vehicle).

    nothing to do with the cable, also Steve, to add, back in the good old days I had viva, magnum and chevettes and they have been known for release bearing to chew through pressure plate splines, I had one do that that was ceased. So I'd advise to get yourself psyched up for a new clutch and bearing then you'll solve that noise.

    You got to go flea market. Get you some feeler gauges. 50 pence. 😂😂😂😂. A pound on a bad day. Put another filter in after pump. Don't matter what way the filters laying. It feeds from the middle. My glass filter on my old Mercedes stands up rite. Lot of sugar in bananas. You can read about it. The clutch. I think I would bite the bullet and pull the trans and put a new clutch package. Then the jobs done. Could be release bearing not returning. Rust on shaft..but check the pin holding the pedal it not worn out and working correctly. Good time to do in the summer. It's a moving part that wears on cars. Easy to change. Get car blocked up high all around. And stay safe. Then you can check underneath and underseal bad spots if needed. Good luck.
