Bruh check your facts. This is legit the only lego game that makes you pay for characters. Not to mention the two years combined literally have the amount of content equivalent to 4-5 lego games.
I was so outraged by the cost that I booted up a calculator, added up all of the packs, and found out that too buy everything, it would cost £700. ( Around $1,500)
AngryCentaurGaming I know that you didn't ;) I was merely mentioning! Sorry if it came off that way, looking back on it, I probably should have worded that a little differently xD Just saying its a great review but the games a rip off! :)
Hears about this game, gets interested and excited. Sees the local $169 price tag..... Nope, not a chance. Great review, but these toys to life games are way overpriced albeit significantly less so in America and other places. The new skylanders seemed tailor made to tickle my childhood memories yet is something I will likely not play or wait however long it takes to drop in price substantially because of its $120 asking price for just the starter pack is to me just absurd. For that price I could buy around 3 to 4 other AAA games at launch, and the $120 isn't even 'complete', or I could have netflix for a a whole year. It just doesn't compute as even a moderately sensible purchase which saddens me as they really do look like something I would enjoy.
+Glade Biddle Around the time the next Skylanders iteration comes around should be the best time to get the previous one. The 30$ I spent on Trap Team was well worth it to me.
KnusperGeneral Seems like a good plan. I may wait it out a little longer yet. Still I think we can all agree $169 is absurd, and it doesn't even include everything.
Screw this game, Screw this business model... ...And a big shout out to all the consumers that chose to finance the continual ruination of gaming as we knew it...I'm sure you can figure out what I think about you... :-p
I've never really been tempted by either Disney infinity or skylanders, but this looks so cool. The fact that they have so many cool licences is so darn awesome..Back to the future, just sayin'. Now, the price is a huge turn off for me, isnt it abit too much, or can the price be justified? Thanks for a awesome review !
+Philminator Yeah seems like LEGO put out the game at a very high price. Compared to the prices on Skylanders and Disney infinity the game does seem a bit overpriced thats for sure, I'll probably wait for a price cut, im not really interested in neither of skylanders or Disney infinity, its the franchises LEGO has managed to get a hold on thats tempting. Back to the future. Simpsons. but even the smaller packs are so darn expensive.
One thing that is really decent is that when you get a character that's exclusive to an IP (i.e. Wicked Witch is the only character for wizard of oz in the game) then you also unlock the adventure world for them, which gives a lot of great value for characters such as wicked witch, chase McCain, E.T., B.A. Baracus, Michael Knight, etc. especially now that those packs are popping up in 99-cent stores like crazy.
Looks like a great game if I look at it as a story based platform puzzle game.If I look at it as a free roaming adventure hub world to roam around in and beat up bad guys, I get disappointed. This is the only reason I will wait to buy this used. I was willing to dump 200-300$ on this game but it's lacking in something that is important to me. I know Lego aren't known for having tons of enemies at all such as Lego Marvel and Lego Hobbit in the free roam world. I like those 2 games a lot because I paid 15$ for them and I get tons of different characters, tons of different weapons I can equip the guys with and I can replay the missions in free play.My ultimate game which only exists in my dreams is Lego Dimensions with the free roam gameplay Metal Gear Solid V offers, in terms of the enemies being generate in the game world.Your review was great. IGN or Gamespot should hire you.
Nice review as always! You are one of the very few I can sit through and not want to yell because you're not obnoxious like most others. Anyway, I just wanted to point out a small benefit of buying the extra content for this game. Since the extra levels (like Portal 2) require extra content to be purchased, you not only get the level content, but you also get Lego figures you get to build. That may be an added benefit, as other games like Skylanders, while collectible, are not changeable like Lego. That said, I'm still not going to drop any money on this game, but I did receive the Portal 2 set for Christmas and they are cool figures to just have.
One thing I like about Dimensions is that it takes the Skylanders approach, in the sense that it is has this huge story and lets you play with anyone you want, whatever you want, and you get to experience the story this way. The hodge podge of stuff is what I've been begging Infinity to do for some time. I mean, I'd love seeing Elsa and Leia take down a boss. Or Donald and Tonto rough up some baddies, but Infinity just doesn't do this. Sure there is the Toy Box, but asking the community to do it is kind of lazy to me. Even the little Expansion Game, ToyBox Takeover, didn't quite do it.
exactly the review people really need to hear. I sat through 3 reviews from mainstream channels like IGN and didnt learn as much as I got from yours. Thank you solid buying decision
I was going to get the game just for the back to the future and Doctor Who stuff, but now that you mention the pay wall BS fuck it, i'm not getting it until i can possibly afford all the characters, that is BS, the added characters should be a bonus, not necessary, i shouldn't have to pay 200 plus dollars to get a bunch of character i don't want, just so i can enjoy the characters i do.
Dude, calm down, it's not that bad. Once you buy a character, you can fully enjoy that character's abilities, and just generally mess around. The pay walls are only there to remind you if A) you need to buy a specific character to have their abilities so you don't spend twelve hours trying to figure out a puzzle you can't solve yet. B) you need to upgrade a vehicle you already own with in-game studs to have an ability so you don't spend twelve hours trying to work out a puzzle you can't solve. or C)you need to tap a certain character that you already own on the toy pad and use their abilities so you don't spend twelve hours trying to figure out a puzzle you can solve. I would highly recommend this game, especially for the doctor who/ back to the future content.
Zarbi Xii with how little content you get for 30 dollars? No thanks, not enough to convince me to get it, especially with all the mistakes made with DW. I know it sounds petty, but watching people play the game has convinced me i may go and buy a full fledged lego doctor who game. But this one? A Waste of my money.
Zarbi Xii I was caught up in the moment and got too angry, I understand that, and if you enjoy the game that's great. But i'm not spending what would be 130 dollars for only a small fraction of a game, and certainly not more money for characters and areas i don't care about. But hey more power too you man, glad you can enjoy it more then me,
Mrcool210 I understand. It's not for everyone, and a full fledged doctor who game would be infinitely better. LEGO really got carried away with the prices on this one.
gaaaaaah... I got it as a gift and its still in the box. I love the idea of it all. But I hate being told I have to buy more crap that use to be unlocked through playing the game back in the day. I dont mind some of it, we love infinity because you can play all of the game and you are only buying into your favorite characters. Its great, my daughters have theirs, I have mine, my wife has hers, its brilliant. we dont "have" to buy them but we each have our own few. But seeing this review and how often those reminders will trigger really makes me want to take it up to the store with the gift receipt before January is up! : ((
The only reason to get it is for doctor who/portal and back to the future and maybe scooby doo. I was going to by doctor who first, but comes out in november so i will buy portal 2.
I think my biggest disappointment with this, is there's no toy box creation. They should go all out and not just takes on Disney Infinite creation but take on Minecraft. I know there's a pc game that supposed to that. But I like to see it added here
good review thanks Karak. You specifically bring in the matter of cost which another I've seen, from Game Trailers I think, did not. It looks like all the other Lego games with thee added elements of toys to life so that Lego can first of all get in on the cash grab and milk parents. And its not even on PC and includes Portal, which is a bit ironic. As you point out then more mature Infinity and Sky L. look like better options.
So, it's been a while and there are sales. We got Homer, Sonic the Hedgehog, Doctor Who, Superman, Scooby-Doo, The Wicked Witch, Ghostbusters and Gremlins in 1 game. Most of these people made up my childhood. To me, the figures have double value coz i do have lego toys as well. Would you recommend it for me?
Awesome video as always fella. This looks so good and having a four year old lad who loves Lego this might not even be a choice but I really appreciate the problems you highlight. I'm planning on being pretty tough on the new packs as I'm not rolling in money. Btw I would love to see you using the actual physical portal if possible in any updates you do. Cheers
The one reviewer to rule them all!, You are the best type of PR any game could have, because even games I have no interest in suddenly seems worth considering.
Just got the starter edition for 39.99 with super girl. I think the score would be higher for this, if it wasn't for the fact that you have to fork over a lot of money for the figures.
The constant interactions with the portal did look bothersome in all the videos I had seen leading up to release. I was really hoping to at least have content lasting more than just 10 hours, even with an additional character outside of the base purchase, at the current asking price. Of course 10 great hours is preferable to 20 meh ones, but for basically another Lego game with tacked-on portal puzzles, this seems overpriced.
Okay. I’ll give it this. This game actually TRIED to implement the figures to the gameplay in a meaningful way. Skylanders and Infinity didn’t do this.
"Not really sure why she's there." Wyldstyle was a popular character in the Lego Movie which made a ton of money and has been lauded as one of the best kids films in a while.
played this at Eurogamer yesturday. I did a doctor who mission and it was really fun but the price is just to high for what I would ever spend on a game! (even though it has several figures and the portal)
Thank you for this review. It answered questions I had as well as ones I didn't know I should be asking. After watching this review, I think I will be waiting for it to be old school for most folks and pick it up in the bargain bin.
It looks and sounds like a lot of fun, but it's far too expensive and the sound of the paywall sounds really intrusive. I'll wait for the game and it's packs to drop in price to something much more reasonable
I hope this toys to life thing with Lego stops. Seems like they're trying to make extra money by taking content out of the game. This would've been a great game if it wasn't toys to life. They want you to pay extra money for content that should be in the game.
This is definitely not for me. Waaaaaaaay too expensive. I like deals and this seems to be a HUGE rip off. How many GREAT used games that are out there could you get for the same amount of money? Many more hours of terrific gameplay for the same amount of money is the way to go. Don't get wrapped up in all the hype and spend your money wisely my friends.
+AngryCentaurGaming That is why I hope this whole toy and game hybrid thing ends soon. it was a good idea at firstThe toys are getting more expensive and hard to find and all it is to me is just glorified on desk DLC and Skylanders and Amiibos are the main problems of this.Good review BTW.
+Khalil Reese I would normally agree but the new Skylanders is absolutely chock-full of content with barely anything needed outside the game to see 100% of it. In fact its downright cheap when you consider that it does come with toys for kids and such. Just my own two centers. But each to their own and I don't disagree that some of it is a waste
+AngryCentaurGaming I agree. Maybe for the sequel for Lego dimensions hopefully they add a bit more dimensions like Star Wars ,Futurama and maybe Marvel.I was disappointed when they said that they weren't adding Star Wars especially when they added Doctor Who. I would have bought the game in a heart beat and this is coming from a non Lego fan.And just scale the paywall back to just maybe certain things like cosmetics only for stuff.
"Disney I hope your bank account goes to infinity" XD
xD
Remember the Lego games where you have over 80 characters and didn't have to pay for any of them? Those were the days...
True
Bruh check your facts. This is legit the only lego game that makes you pay for characters. Not to mention the two years combined literally have the amount of content equivalent to 4-5 lego games.
Brixster what are you talking about?
Your reviews are pretty much the only reviews I listen to. Without you I wouldn't know what to do with my money. I'd be broke af. so thank you.
I was so outraged by the cost that I booted up a calculator, added up all of the packs, and found out that too buy everything, it would cost £700. ( Around $1,500)
Apart from that, excellent review, as always, of course ;)
They're acting like money is as easy to get as real money Jesus 😂
+Joseph Duncan ...apart from that? I don't think I stated something different in my review.
AngryCentaurGaming I know that you didn't ;) I was merely mentioning! Sorry if it came off that way, looking back on it, I probably should have worded that a little differently xD Just saying its a great review but the games a rip off! :)
Oh i see no problem
Hears about this game, gets interested and excited. Sees the local $169 price tag..... Nope, not a chance.

Screw this game, Screw this business model...
...And a big shout out to all the consumers that chose to finance the continual ruination of gaming as we knew it...I'm sure you can figure out what I think about you... :-p
Please do no buy into this the figure buying is bull crap if u keep buying this it will keep happening
I've never really been tempted by either Disney infinity or skylanders, but this looks so cool.

Awesome review. Very informative. Will probably pick it up soon and wait for Black Friday/Cyber Monday for the packs.

+NDN Omar (Omar) interesting thoughts there actually
I did. That's the only way to really find out how it actually plays. Duh.
exactly the review people really need to hear. I sat through 3 reviews from mainstream channels like IGN and didnt learn as much as I got from yours. Thank you solid buying decision
+Gary McCarthy thanks glad you liked it!
IGN don't tell you the downsides they almost trick you into getting the game. IGN hides the truth.
***** ok
Hey man great review! Just wanna say you're reviews are some of the best on RUclips. You cynical Brit and ggmanlives. So keep making vids!
+SuperPineapplejones Thanks super
Great video man. Will you be doing a comparison of all 3 toys to life games for Christmas?
+Shane Enright I 100% will

So will the dedicated lego games like Jurassic be completely ? Dropped?
+ALI ESSA Different division so I think those games will keep on coming
ALI ESSA I hope so. Have they made a main lego game since then?
love your reviews. love your opinions on the technical side you dont hear about with other reviews.
+Richard Gelnette Thanks Richard
The way the screen tears and comes back together like that is blowing my mind.

is there any unlockable characters in game?
So what you think of buying it now?
Does the Wyldstyle Lego character have anything to do with the classic graff movie "Wildstyle" from the 80's?
no, its from the lego movie

Yeah the price here in the UK to get everything is insane
I know right? It costs almost £400 to get everything! It's still worth it for some packs though.
Thanks Ill save my money

+althena cordium I am worried the lego toys will NEVER drop in price
Most everything drops in price eventually -- patience is a virtue *and* a wallet saver. :)
is this game worth getting now. and are all the bugs out of the game.
first level sucks, but everything after is awesome, prices on characters have gone way down so now you can buy alot without spending a lot of money
It looks and sounds like a lot of fun, but it's far too expensive and the sound of the paywall sounds really intrusive. I'll wait for the game and it's packs to drop in price to something much more reasonable

relax it's Lego's first game that is like infinity or skylanders I mean look I think skylanders was 100$ when The first one came out
So, what is it "Buy?Wait for Sale?Rent? Or Never Touch?"
Wait for sale
I would get it if it wasn't damn $150 AUD at jb-hifi
want it but I cannot afford it lol
+Amiibo Dan's GameRoom thanks
Paywall... lol. What were you expecting from another Lego game?
+Sean Goresht Not even close to this. Its not even in the normal realm
