  • The Electric Sportbike from China is getting upgrades!! This is the first video of a series of upgrade videos. But today, the Chinese Electric Sportbike through us a surprise that we DEFINITELY were not expecting - It was housing a well-constructed Lithium Ion battery pack! BUT, the battery pack is a seemingly old, used battery pack that doesn't hold much charge. Check it out in the video. SO strange.

    It’s possible that the battery pack is new however it only takes a few faulty batteries in the pack to render the entire pack weak. Just like a lawn hose, the hose maybe new but only one kink and it’s output is low.

      Yep. A few bad cells is all it takes. It can ruin the other cells as well. Might be best to take all the cells apart and see which ones are good and bad. Not a task I would be looking forward to. But I bet most of the cells can be salvaged

      Chances are, and it's a wild guess, is that they construct these packs from used laptop batteries. Laptop batteries can die, but still have viable cells - and so they wire them using those 'good' cells. Maybe some duds got through. Something about that pack on the whole gives me the heebie jeebies though.

      I used to have a 40V 40A 1600W scooter. It was quite Fun at up to 30mph. The battery went bad after 1 year (60% of capacity left), and after 1,5 years it only had a range of less than 5 miles, thanks to bad cells.

Its simply a matter of time before that catches up with other products. Seriously though look at the hawk 250. Depending on which version you get. Test the cells and see if you can replace the bad cells and save yourself some time. A while back I tore apart the 18 volt cells in one of my okd drills and found 3 or 4 dead cells. I was able to jump start the bad ones with a 12 volt power supply and a small light bulb to buffer it a bit. It blew the bad crystals inside and the cells came back and was holding a charge again for a long time.

    Like seeing the saga of the Chinese Electric Sportbike and would like to see you hook up the original battery again this time with the wires properly soldered and see its potential with the stock battery. Likely the poor connection was a cold solder joint so that's why it didn't fully charge.

    I had a radio controlled model car, a couple of years ago, which used a fuel cell. There is a possibility that you could convert the electric bike to fuel cell in the future. On the RC car (which was mad in China) the fuel cell used distilled (deionised) water which charging separated into hydrogen and oxygen. When running the hydrogen and oxygen were recombined to generate electrical current. Obviously huge advantage over battery packs as service life is over 1,000 x longer. Still requires charging but the reactive medium (distilled water) is easily sourced from the steam from a kettle or the distilled water in a portable dehumidifier. Also distilled water is sold at garages for lead acid battery topping up.
    The Fuel Cell was yet another British invention during 1955.

    Seems to me the battery could of been that low during shipping it damaged the cells. The charging wire was just a crappy loose connection and probably could of caused a fire as the wire probably would of got hot due to the resistance when charging. Just a good thing you took it apart and found it in time.

    I'm surprised it isnt a Lead Acid battery, a lot of people claim these cycles get shipped with them and need to be upgraded to Lithium ion. As for the pack, I'd suspect a little of column A and a little of Column B. If the solder wasnt strong then it wasnt making a consistent connection (heck it could have even been a fire hazard), I also think because cheap companies tend to salvage old batteries from old laptops and other devices (because they might be old, but still technically work) the individual battery charges might not have been properly balanced (which can cause some batteries to work harder to even the load) on top of being badly connected to the BMS, which may have harmed the batteries even further, a domino effect. Of course there's potential in any of the parts for being faulty, from the BMS to the motor controller, maybe even the motor itself. Fingers crossed! Good luck! Can't wait to see how it turns out.

    From what I see is the video , the bms doesn't look like it can handle the amps. I know with higher voltage batteries you can use smaller conductor's but that orginal battery needs a thicker wire. That probably explains the massive voltage drop because you were generating heat. Also what was the thickness of the Nickle?

    Hey Inja. I started watching your videos prior to me getting my e bike. They sell these bikes here in Brooklyn NY in these little shops. You walk in with cash, and the first thing you realize is the language barrier is far too strong to get around. So the guy selling them, just hands you the keys and sends you on your way.
    I ended up buying this SAME EXACT model.
    I have so many questions. But the thing that has me most concerned, is that it’s rattling when I go over any type of bump in the road. The bike sounds like an old beater of a car. Like things are loose. I ride dirt bikes, and the only thing I hear when I hit a bump on my dirt bike is the air leaving my rear shock.
    Is it normal for these bikes to sound like you have a bucket of bolts in the storage compartment every time you hit a bump or drive off a curb?

    I'm just curious about something. You stated that the original pack that you just discovered was lithium, was a 72 volt 40 amp hour pack. Yet you show the second charger that you were sent (after the original charger 'fried') ......with video of the charger showing specifications for charging a 72 volt 20 amp hour battery as apposed to the 72 volt 40 amp hour battery you had in the bike. So you were charging the 40 amp hour sized battery with a charger designed to charge a 20 amp hour sized battery. Could this have lead to those cells in the original battery possibly never receiving a full charge due to the wrong charger in the first place and therefore leading to it's demise ? Just curious. Thanks.

    • @curtmacneill8703
      @curtmacneill8703 4 года назад +1

      morris p. He must have just misspoken slightly because chargers are rated as a voltage and an amp rating. Basically, the amp rating just tells how fast it will charge, so you can’t really “underpower” a battery with a charger, so to speak. I believe the one he has is a 5 amp charger, which is fairly low, but lower is safer for the battery, just slower. Hope that helps!

    • @TheInja
      @TheInja  4 года назад

      Yeah, I may misspeak every now and again. I'm not a pro at this, so next video you'll have someone who actually knows this stuff explain it all. 👌🏽 But the charger will do the job for sure and is correct for the battery.

      @@curtmacneill8703 .... That's not what I meant. I realize the amp rating itself pertains to the speed at which the charger will charge. I'm talking about SIZE (amp HOURS (ah) of the battery) something completely different. In the video you will see clearly printed on the charger that was being used, that the charger was made for a 20 amp/hour SIZED battery. But it was being used to charge a 40 amp/hour SIZED battery. That charger is looking to shut off when the 72 volt 20 amp/hr battery it was designed for ... is fully charged, but can't get a proper reading because the battery it is trying to charge is twice that size (72 volt 40 AMP/HR) .... I'm not trying to be smart here, but it could very well have been that the lack of the proper battery sized charger (as in amp hours) sent initially with the bike might have been the problem from the get go. Explains the limited range the first time you took it out and why it's registering toast now. Probably never had a full charge from day one. The original lithium 72 volt 40amp/hr battery might be salvageable, if you can get your hands on a true 72volt 40 (forty) ah charger or any programmable lithium charger. Good luck with it all. Cheers.

      @@morrisp.5583 i have 2x 14amp/hour 48 volt batteries in my bike, i use a 2amp 54.6v charger , it takes approx 7 hours to charge one at a time, I think it's the voltage thats more important to fully charging, the amps just impact on the charge time, i might be wrong but i've done over 8000k on my e-mtb and the math(s) always checks out. probably find a 72 v battery requires a 82v charger.

      @@TheInja .... Just as a quick follow-up. I double checked the Battery University website (I highly recommend it for anything battery related) regarding matching chargers ah rating to battery size in ah and sure enough it stated that the deviation should be no more than 25 % or charging issues will occur. Just thought I'd pass that on. Best of luck with everything. Cheers.

    Wondering if you can remove the hub motor frombthe rear wheel. Then rebuild the wheel like it was the back wheel of a gas powered motor bike. Next manufacturer a way of connecting the hub motor to a motorbike gear box. 3000 wat motor through a r1 gear box will work nicely. Ok you have to manufacture a clutch system but it should work.

    You welded the batteries in a series/parallel configuration with each other.
    Not a good idea.
    The voltage of a stronger battery might wear out a weaker battery.
    What you need is the negative (flat) side of the battery welded together, and the positive side to a BMS.
    If you can afford it, each cell connected to their individual wires to the BMS.
    Then use a power inverter to convert the 2,7-3,6V to the 70V the rotor needs.
    It's the best way to have a long lasting battery pack.
    BMS for battery packs, aren't cheap. But perhaps you can find cheap BMS boards for 1 to 10 batteries,and just buy a bunch of these,making clusters, using another BMS to control the BMSes of the battery pack.
    It'll handle low voltages, but high amps.

    I think there's a 100% chance that those cells are not what they advertised them to be. All the capacities are vastly inflated in adverts now also when the battery is low the bms will cut the output so it appears totally dead till it's been charged a little?

    Charger is 2.8A and your new battery capacity is? 20? 40 ah? For a start it's ok but later you need change charger for at least 10A. 2.8A charger will charge for example 28Ah battery in 10 hours. So if you have 40Ah battery you should charge it some 15 hours it's more then overnight charging.

    • @chrisredfield3240
      @chrisredfield3240 4 года назад

      With loss it's more like 2.8a 28ah = 14-16 hours some will be heat and a battery never gives you back what you put in. So 40ah will take a very long time to charge probably more than 24 hours

    Those batteries are probably not old or use, there are just different quality (brands) on the market. If you compare a branded high performance 3500mAh battery (for example Nitecore) with a cheap (fake) random unbranded 3500mAh Chinese battery the difference in performance can be HUGE, this is a common fact.
