Lucky luck you are missing something. Khmer have gone to war with Thai and they lost and they also gone to war to Vietnam and they lose. Khmer is willing to turn Cambodian into a French protectorate (not a colony). In a nutshell we get rekt by everyone around us and we have to ask for help. After they got back on their feet the Khmer Rouge came, our own people decided to kill each other due communist ideology.
I lost it when the lady said she told them she was a banana seller.. you can see her pain and how much sadness this brings her everyday. I can’t wait to see this documentary. Such beautiful music I came to love so much and it makes me sad that this had to happen.. but their legacy and music will always be a reminder of them and that makes me happy to know they are still alive through their music.
Just finished watching this movie earlier and it was AMAZING. So much footage and so many interesting stories that have never seen the light of day until now. The ending had me teary eyed, but man... I'm so glad this movie was made. The Cambodian spirit for arts and culture has to stay alive!
It's available on ITunes 8/4/2015. Just watched it yesterday with my hubby. Can't wait to show this to my mom, uncle and my grandfather. My mom used to to tell me about her favorite singers like Sieng Dy, Pen Ran, and Ros Sereysothea. My grandfather loved listening to Sinn Sisammouth and as for my uncle he loved the rock n roll music by Yol Aurang. He even made up a Khmer band here in the USA back in the 80s. Some of the lingering questions in the back of my mind since I was a child has been answered. I hope there will be more movies and documentaries about the history of Cambodia because us young american-Cambodians don't know a lot about our Khmer culture. It's almost as though there's a piece of the puzzle that's missing. Well this documentary explains it all very well.
I seen this film through CAAM FEST. This is an amazing film. Thank you putting this film together. I like the fact that it focuses on the aspect of Khmer music and its influences during the 1950s-1970s. Can't wait to bring my parents to see this film in May
It's so good to see the comments here are respectful. Beautiful documentary. My brother gave me the DVD. He served in Vietnam and said this explains best why he was never the same "Easy going Thomas" he was when he left home from Seattle in 1966. Beautiful film and music. This really humanizes cultures that were unfamiliar to us. At that time the news fed us a very different perspective from well calculated news Feeds. What a lovely documentary. US soldiers did what they were told. Nobody came out "okay". The world leaders put an entire generation of our brothers and some sisters in an impossible position. Thomas does humanitarian aid is SE Asia now. I still thank these boys for their service. They did what they were told to was serving their country against the "bad guys". The leaders today know better, but don't seem to learn. The soldiers of that era either had justified breakdowns or turned to helping fields for careers. The leaders keep on keeping on the same path, unfortunately.
As much as my heart fill with hatred toward the act of bombing, I'm so sorry that your brother and others were put in a difficult position. I'm glad he is able to find his peace.
There were no bad guys, the good guy created the bad guy, America and Vietnam and Cambodia is way way to far to say that those boy were there to serve their country, because was never ever in danger from those people, those American boy was there to serve their leader egos and political ideology, that's all, but never for their country or principle of humanity.

The movie has recalled lots of histories about my country. I had been hesitated believe in my parents and elderly people talking about the Pol Pot or Khmer Rough Regime and even I have been reading many books about such worst regime. It's remained an unbelievable thing till i watched the movie in the land of U.S. I went to see the movie in Tucson last June 10, 2015 with my friends, where there were some errors for sub title (Khmer-English) have been found. Anyway the film was so good and I am proud to see the movie talking about Cambodia but i am still so sad about US bombs on my country for 200 days. :(
So much respect to the music development back in the days in Cambodia. Such a vibrant and energetic community and also country as a while. That was Khmer music in its prime!
I enjoy learning about different music scenes and the influencing factors that govern them. This was such a great film. I personally know many Khmer and see how they live with respect and honor in understandable ways I could get behind and I am sorry for the loss of all who perished in the killing fields. I am so glad this history was researched and this film was able to come alive.

Plus, Cambodia involved assisting the Communist ( Viet Cong) which let Vietcong armies went through the Cambodia border to fight with (Veit Minh) that was supported by the US. And pushed Cambodia in the Civil wars in 1970-1979 and so on to the late 80s. # Cambodia themselves felt regretted from helping Veit Cong since then. Also, king Sihanouk also wanted to get back to be allied with the US, but it was too late for him...so on.
Amazing to see in the comments that there are people willing to defend the Khmer Rouge.... Yeah, there was a lot of blame to go around in South East Asia in the 20th century, but the Khmer Rouge were a special kind of evil who were responsible for the deaths of millions because they were professionals, artists and some because the merely wore glasses. It's amazing that people would stand up and defend them.

When I was 2, my family went through this horrific ordeal. My parents went through hell to keep us safe. They separated from their kids for life. My mission is go back after 40 plus year later to give back. Paying forward, there are kids that have nothing, there are some still not knowing where the next meal comes from. What happened to us in the 70s nothing will ever completely take that pain away.
This is a fascinating film. Both sad and joyous. I love the music. We should learn from history. Those who endeavour to control popular culture ALWAYS have malintent, whatever country we are in at the time.

I cant the song right now, but the artist clearly is Sinn Sisamouth. I guess that Ros Serey Sothea featured it, because the songs he sang alone usually were a bit more chilled. Those two are the most famous artist of this era. So if youre interested in this music style, look those up. (Serey Sothea actually is the sister of the woman covered in this documentary)

I cant the song right now, but the artist clearly is Sinn Sisamouth. I guess that Ros Serey Sothea featured it, because the songs he sang alone usually were a bit more chilled.
Those two are the most famous artist of this era. So if youre interested in this music style, look those up.
