Very cool! It really is amazing how much technology has permeated everything, imagine telling someone 50 years ago that they'd have two different types of satellite communications and infrared cameras on a sailing yacht!

It’s truly remarkable how much has changed. Probably the two biggest worries used to be where are we, and what’s the weather are now “solved” and available realtime at an affordable price.

As so many others have said, these videos are great. The simultaneous views really make you feel like you are right on board. That you can produce and send these for mid Atlantic truly shows how amazing networking has become.
I worked on the first 600Mb & 2.4Gb long haul fibre optic equipment from Nortel that became the early internet backbone. In the late 80’s one of the key architects and visionaries said what we were developing would mean the “death of distance”. At that time it sounded very futuristic. I don’t think any of us imagined just how far things could go!

Starlink power supply: There have been quite a few people from the RV community who have built DC power supplies for their Starlink. The inside unit is a wifi modem and 48V DC power supply. All of the Satalite hardware software is in the dish, so if you have 48V or a more efficient conversion than making 120v ac only to have it converted back to DC, then it might be worth it. The process is to cut and splice the proprietary cable and create an ethernet out and 48v dc in. These are connected to your ships power and whatever wifi modem you want. The starlink indoor unit isn't used. Depending on your existing equipment, there can be a considerable power saving. It is still a powerhog, though, but remember it is a high-speed link reaching out 500 miles to recivers traveling at supersonic speeds. Starlink does need to provide indoor units more compatible with yacht power though.

Nick, this is absolutely one of the best videos ever made to explain plotters, computers, autopilot, uplinks, wind, and how they all work together. You even touch on sail profiles and limitations on apparent wind speed. Speed over land vs speed getting to where you want to go!!! Yes!
I’m saving this and sharing it with new crew and new sailers. The synced multi cameras to show things like the sail powering back up as the autopilot adjusts and the computer presents the change in wind is exactly what people need to see and understand. So well done!!
And all of it applies to any brand system - yes some things move around between companies and their products, but the concepts and information here are/is universal.
I’m buying you at least one drink in Miami in a few weeks for this!
But for now, I’m going to watch the rest of this video. I had to pause it because I was so moved with how well this video and information are presented that I needed to say something.

Thanks for the technical deep dive. I'm not a sailor (unless you count my teen years sailing a sunfish on the lake we lived on), but my son's dream is to get a boat and sail the oceans so for the past 4 years now I've been watching sailing videos. I've caught through observation mostly some of what all the screens mean, and it was really nice to have you explain what they actually mean so I get it right. The biggest takeaway I got was the readout that shows your speed to target (can't remember the exact name), and that your autopilot actually steers the boat according to the wind direction. I always though it was steering to a direct heading and you adjusted the sails when the wind changed vs. adjusting them to maximize your speed to target. Love your videos, and looking forward to seeing your trip adventures. Praying your wife gets to feeling better and can join you when you reach land.

You are talking VMG, velocity made good. The autopilot can steer to heading, course, or wind. Different modes. We are mostly in wind mode on the open sea

Well done. You explain things very well. Please take it to the next level which nobody out there does. WX charts, I mean old school mean sea level pressure prognosis. With everyone following the coloured wx maps have no idea how these H/L importantly the difference in pressures relates to everything in between.
You are THE MAN to do this. Take your time to study the full picture and present something special. Then I'll be a patron. Hooray from Leo. Down under.
