    For several years I looked at Catamarans and thought for sure that is what I would buy (Year 2020-2022). After realizing the premium on cats, I went back and reconsidered a mono. I put a short list of things I was looking for and one was "waterline" but still able to sail short handed and even solo. Last year I bought a 2007 Jeanneau 54DS that was in the NE and in great shape for roughly 250K. After a lot of projects and about 100K worth of upgrades I have a boat that will take me anywhere I want to go, is as roomy as a cat, I can single hand thanks to technology like autohelm and electric winches. Most of all she looks and sails great. As for speed 9-10kts motoring and sailing which is as good as many of performance cats and far better than the floating condos. Just another option to consider!

      There is a lot that can break on that type of boat (and it will!) ....'everywhere' is of course relative since you cannot go too far north or south on a plastic boat and once you are in SE Asia; good luck finding (or even ordering parts) or getting something actually fixed on a boat chock full of tech

The broker said that he should be able to sell it “ within a year”. He didn’t listen so went to another broker and went through the same scenario. This guy listened ( what a concept). We had is sold in a month! Done. I was willing to bring the price down to a reasonable amount and it sold right away. @Vallecaucanisimo just to make clear, from my part it was an honest question, not criticism. For example, would you rather go for a boat that's $50K cheaper but located on the other side of the world or go for a closer one that's more expensive? Or maybe a smaller but new(er) one? Once one budgets the cost of flying, accommodation, and the opportunity cost of time I'm not sure what the answer is. What I do know is that if something sounds too good to be true (e.g. way below comparative listings), it usually is.

I have spent months living and sailing in other people's boats, I just bring the food and the booze and help with the chores. It's a whole lot less expensive and much less stress than owning. I have had even more success flying other people's airplanes. I have all my ratings and stay current. I've probably saved $1 million over the past 10 years.

    Your analysis is interesting, another point in your favour is the number of youtube sailors that are simply building new vessels. The problem with boats is that they are like cottages, valuable to the people who own them but far less so to the people looking to buy one. Brokers don't help the process and have little inclination to do anything. They get paid if the boat sells but only if they were retained by the client. High-priced boats in your listing show you have inventory. the best brokers are those who have high turnover.
    Good luck

      @TheOKellys  3 месяца назад +9

      Funny how some people look at life. Obviously with all the thumbs up, I suppose you all share this sentiment. But let me enlighten you.
      Your assumption is that any time and money not spent on a boat is a waste. What an impoverished viewpoint.
      First of all, we have learned more about different boats, builders, designs and designers than we could EVER have had we purchased another boat right way.
      Secondly, we have spent incredible time with friends we’d NEVER have met other than through looking for our next boat. Same goes with all sorts of non-boating-related experiences.
      Last, as the boat market is shifting exactly as we expected, while the stock market has been better than we could have hoped for, financially we are way way way ahead of where we’d be if we’d bought a boat close to the top of the market 18-24 months ago.
      So…friends, life works out the way it does…being grateful for what does happen and NOT ungrateful or even regretful is the only way to be.
      Your thesis that we have somehow wasted time or money or both…doesn’t hold for us.

But is that your perfect boat? Wouldn’t you be that much happier if you lived on a barge with its very own taco truck? Add an airstream and a few tonnes of sand and you wouldn’t even need to get in your dinghy to go to the beach. You like the perks of a 24’ beam? Imagine what a 100’ beam would be like. I bet that combo would be more than 50% cheaper. And when hurricane season comes, you just hook your taco truck up to the airstream and your happy place goes wherever you do.

    I've been in this hole myself! On three boats not too dissimilar to what you seem to be looking at - although I'm a bit lower budget but we seem to have fairly similar approaches to things ....knowing well how the market seems to be, have had fairly cheeky offers accepted, only to arrive to find quite seriously misrepresented boats! 😢
    Wondering though - if you've looked at any of the open series Nautitechs?
    I know you had a mention and interview of an older 47
    I sailed an open 40 the other week and found is very pleasant - I'd imagine similar but maybe a little quicker than your Leopard ....would be very interested in your opinion if you got on one for a snoop - or even better a sail!

    Nice to see that you are getting “ buckets list travel experiences accomplished! A few thoughts.
    1. Are you getting local surveyors to do a “ walk through” before flying to view the vessels? Sadly, many photos and descriptions are quite aged.
    2. Thoughts on building, or having built, your own vessel. You have a pretty good idea of what you desire. A few of your friends are currently in that sphere. What are your thoughts, plus and minuses?
    3. If you had unlimited resources, ie, you won the lottery, before retiring to the island you purchased in the San Juan Islands, what would you buy/build?
    4. Next time you travel to Vancouver Island, let’s get you out fishing Chinook and Halibut!

    The money is indeed doing well! Cheers, O'Kelly's! We're finally on a little catamaran (38' Ocean Twins, 1 of 3 produced from Pat Patterson, who also designed the Heavenly Twins). By no means is it a performance cat, but it seems to be a great place to call home and cruise around. The market is doing a fantastic job of paying for a few little needed upgrades, but the boat market? Yeah, you guys nailed it. We were set on over 40' until I stumbled on this reasonably priced little gem. Anything over 40' is 2-3x the price, without the build quality to back up such price points.
    Good luck, on your continued search! I'll be happy to buy you guys a beverage or brew up a good cup of coffee if ever we cross paths. Thanks for the content.

    Q: I'm looking for boats and there seems to be loads coming off charter in the Med around Greece / Croatia / Italy often tax free as they've been held inside a company. (Yes I know you have to pay tax somewhere - but it means you won't be paying it twice). Have you considered setting up base there for a few months waiting for the right deal as then you're only an hours flight away max. I'm sure you'll get a lot of patrons / viewers will ing to take you out on sails too! OR is there something fundamentally wrong with ex charter boats (other than obviously more engine hours and wear and tear).

      Well, without picking on anyone in particular, I feel pretty darn rotten for some of these folks dealing with what looks like poor quality right out of the factory. It is doubly tough if you are going through this in public as we all are to certain extent with all this social media. Doubly hard because you don’t want to give your huge investment (boat) a bad reputation and you also (probably) want to keep a good relationship with the people you hope will fix the boat. But yeh…man o man I think I’d be lawyering up if I were a couple of these owners…

    It seems to me that if your incremental cost of traveling around the world looking at boats Plus the lost RUclips & Patreon revenue is greater than about $1,100/mo than from a purely financial perspective, you should have paid a $100,000 premium over what you think a 50 ft boat SHOULD cost. It's a simple math exercise. And the longer you go the bigger the financial hit to you.

    • @TheOKellys
      @TheOKellys  3 месяца назад +1

      A simple math exercise, eh? I’m glad you’re not running my business. First of all, revenue does not equal profit…not for any business I know. Second is cost of capital, which is extremely high right now…and extraordinarily high if one considers the opportunity cost in the markets of late. Third is depreciation which is double digit in the two years we’ve been looking. EBITDA margin, which I’ve never gone the trouble to calculate is certainly low single digits if positive at all for an endeavor such as ours. So…the simple math exercise you suggest confirms we’ve made exemplary business decisions.
      We sail, and make videos about sailing, for the love of it. We have tried our best to bring value to this community along the way…for the friendships and connections. That’s our why.

    • @lenjanssen9600
      @lenjanssen9600 3 месяца назад +1

      @@TheOKellys I used a reasonable cost of capital in my calculation, And of course revenue doesn''t equal profit,, ,but it's hard to imagine that with you flying around the world and paying for hotels and other housing that your expenses on the boat would be greater than they are now. I assumed conservatively that they would be the same.
      As to depreciation, that's a tax deduction or should be and I calculated that in my model.
      I think what you are missing is the lost revenue Payback on a reasonable premium would be pretty quick. Every month that goes by is revenue you'll never get back. BTW, I have made a very lucrative career in finance so I may know what I'm talking about.
      Obviously we all have different risk tolerances...... and you have to do you

    Actively watching cat prices since late last year, even the charter market sale prices are dropping (sort of stalled currently due to the summer hype, but will probably fall a bit more before the end of the year) on Leopards and Lagoons (can still even find some 2016 to 2019 powercats in the 40-50' range for under $500k if you're willing to look at former charter boats as well).
    The last pandemic was just one cause of the huge rush on supply, and now folks are realizing how expensive boats are, and/or have to adjust because of other financial or employment issues. So there is now actually a rather large supply of boats out there, as long as you're not chasing brands, but we all know cats will always be more expensive than a monohull.

    We bought a new catamaran for charter for a few years then to cruise. The market has been crazy as the older cats are selling for more than owners paid! So many new cats are going to charter programs to replace older boats and ones destroyed by hurricanes (saint thomas)-500+ lost? So prices have escalated so much.

    Key points, budget, lifestyle and expectations. 500k boat 500k investments and a bank account to support that. Having freedom to be flexible to change is so important. A budget to maintain both must be a priority with expectations or All of it can be lost. Nick I don't like parking garages. Megan I hope this cycle of being sick finally passes. 2025 is around the corner. The current status of the world is going to be determined then. IT has to. Folks can't afford what is happening today. Over value by inflation isn't good. Most that have investments can't afford to take it out because taxes and inflation is going to eat it up. Love you guys ❤️ keeping everyone informed is so awesome.

    In the last video, you guys made a vague reference to the fact that you were under contract for a "performance boat down south". Just wondering what happened. Your data collection is excellent and I agree with your decision to wait to buy. With 58% of catamarans selling for less than $300,000 over the past 4 years, I can see a market developing for less expensive, entry-level cats made by the legacy catamaran builders. If I see an ad for a new, inexpensive O'Kelly catamaran, you owe me lunch for the idea 😂😂
