    Ken was telling a story on a a wrestling shoot interview where he was walking into a bar to put away some beers and he bought a pack of cigarettes....it was an innocuous comment on his part , but an Olympic champ and world class athlete drinking and smoking not to mention the McDonald's hamburgers he was looking to purchase the night he was arrested with Mr saito...the world let alone athletics was a a different universe back then..

    RF John when it comes to ken Panera, give him credit where credit is due. Kill that jealousy. If you have powerlift the way ken patera did. You probably may have won some trophies as well. Accept that fact...... the first American to press over 500 lbs. I won a recreational tournament when I leg pressed 1000 pounds for 25 reps without stopping. Did good morning work out with 300 pounds on my neck and shoulders. Did pullovers with 250 pounds for 15 reps. Held all the weight up on the leg extension machine with a person hanging onto my legs. Had 3 200 pound men stand on my torso while I laid on the floor.

    Not taking anything away from Patera but I'll bet there was a cable or chain hooked to the back of the truck . That's probably why they didn't show the back of it . Doing something like that for real would be too dangerous.

    Sorry but Ken never set world records or was first man to press 500 pounds.
    While he was very strong 550 pound push press off rack he just didn't have technique. IF he had continued Olympic lifting after 1972 he could have competed for world championships against Alexeev but he went to wrestling.

    • @davidkeller2832
      @davidkeller2832 5 лет назад +4

      Gotta love the way pro-wrestling "inflates" accomplishments. I think the only "world record" achievement Ken ever set in weightlifting was being the first to successfully clean 500 lbs in competition. Unfortunately, just cleaning that weight is not treated as a record. I'll have to dig deeper but seem to recall Ken pulled that off in 1969 or 1970. The story is that when he then tried to complete the lift, the platform broke underneath him and he had to drop the weight. Regardless, Ken was crazy strong but nagging injuries from being late-starter in the sport and insufficient technique prevented him (and us fans) from finding out what his max capability could have been. Perhaps the other world record achievement was joining the 600 kg club for the combination of the Clean & Press, Snatch and Clean & Jerk.
