Don't make the mistake of skipping his first album, Section.80! It might not have the same conceptual focus as his 2 following albums but i think it's a great look at how amazingly talented he was and is. It also gives context to his 2nd verse on Sing About Me on the track Keisha's Song, since that verse is told from the perspective of Keisha's sister. That "line of context" continues on To Pimp A Butterfly. Personally i think it's a shame that so many people skip Section.80, he has a sort of raw optimism and belief in himself and his message on the album that is really infectious. Highlights for me on that album is Keisha's Song, Hiiipower(Produced by J.cole) and Poe Mans Dreams but most of the other tracks are strong aswell. It's also before he was as honed in on his own style so a lot of his influences are more obvious on this album, atleast when it comes to rap. You generally get a better look at how he evolves in his outlook on the world, his music and rap ability. Give it a chance, i doubt that you will regret it. His progress from that album to GKMC and continuing on TPAB is amazing
This is still my favorite Kendrick album. The others are good and great and compelling but the raw proximity to his origins on this project combined with how damn catchy and good all the tracks are, plus the connective story tissue, makes it all come together into a project I can listen to anytime.
I have played this album all the way through a couple of times already and it's incredible. My favorites at the moment are Art of Peer Pressure, Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst, and Real.
Amazing stuff, the song placement in this album always amazes me. From the end of B****, dont kill my vibe where he hops into the car with his friends. This rides into backseat freestyle where he is gloating throughout the whole song. This then rolls into the art of peer pressure which outlines how he conforms to this different side of himself when in the presence of others. This complements backseat freestyle as a stand alone track it just seems like a rap banger but in context it is really him conforming to this social pressure to live up to norms of being “cool” or “gangster”.
The songs are so dense thematically. Even Swimming Pools has a really dark context now that I've heard the album all the way through. It's shocking how that happened.
Great pick. An all time classic record. For some more recent rap records I recommend the Forever Story by JID and Sometimes I might be Introver by Little Simz. SIMBI came out last year by a female artist and is a great mixture of orchestral hip hop with some other great sounds and themes. The Forever Story came out this year and has garnered a lot of praise, JID is notable for his intricate flow patterns and rhythm schemes. It's his best project to date. Also, Mely My Eyez See Your Future by Denzel Curry is another amazing album to drop this year that also came with a deluxe edition sporting some great mixes of Jazz and Soul remixes to the songs off the album. This genre goes so deep and if I get into recommendations I won't be able to stop. If there is anything in particular you are looking for that may help narrow down what you pick to give your attention to.
Denzel Curry is one of the rappers on my list and since you and couple of others have recommended him, I will likely be checking him out sooner than later. But those are some great suggestions and I really like this style of rap for sure.
If you want to get into more experimental hip hop than Atrocity Exhibition by Danny Brown is a must. He has one of the most unique voices in hip hop, and his lyrical ability to make you crack up then hit you with something truly deep and introspective is insane.
I had the pleasure to see Kendrick live a few month back, and i have to say the best live performance ive been to. It felt more like a teather, where emotion and music melted togheter.

I veeery rarely comment on any RUclips channels, but I definitely agree with needing to check out JID in Forever Story. His technical abilities are just off the charts, he has a very percussion like style and is very often compared to Kendrick. Also another +1 for Little Simz!

Amazing reaction! remember that "instrument" that you couldn't guess from the beggining of Money Trees? It actually is a sample in reverse from the song Silver Soul by Beach House (one of my favourite bands). Also, I wanted to recommend you to use the genius website instead of the lyrics from spotify, especially in rap music, that way you can see the structure of the lyrics of the song, the artists involved in each verse, bridge and chorus and the meaning of the lines for the deep dives afterwards the reaction, but it´s cool if you don't wanna change it, i'd still watch whatever you react to next. I subscribed and I tell you why. The way you analysed the voice fade, that´s it, you explained it like i couldn't for yeats and it is simple yes. These type of reacters are the good content reacters, it's not only bump your head, it's put yourself in the same mood of a album/song.
I appreciate that feedback very much. I try to think how the artist thought only off of a first listen. It's a slow and subtle fade which ties in very well with the actual message that is being said at the same time.
Okay I don’t know if this is right but whenever I hear the end of the second verse for SAMIDOT I always think that her saying “I’ll never fade away” and then fading away is kinda showing how she is just falling into the system and her voice is being forgotten and left to the past along with Kendrick slowly forgetting/ tuning her out.
So I definitely had a narrow perspective in the moment since there's a lot of context that is missed on first listen. But I really like your interpretation of that. We all try so hard not to fall into a statistic or the norm and 99% we are doomed to continue the cycle because of the nature of the country or where we are growing up. I also love that you can slowly hear the voice fading. It's not abrupt or sudden. It's a long, slow, and subtle process that you're not quite sure is happening until it's too late.

I STRONGLY Recommend OutKast's Discography. It is Truly a Journey and Just gets better with Each Album. Lots of Genre Mixing and Live Instrumentation and No Two Albums sound the Same.
If you enjoyed this, I would recommend checking out Saba - Care For Me. Sometimes overlooked, but one of the great modern rap albums in my opinion. Made in the wake of the death of his cousin/best-friend it explores themes of grief, mental health, poverty and much more with great instrumentals. A moving + impactful listen!
First time watching your channel. As a musician myself I highly appreciate your breakdowns, you know your stuff and you got a great vibe man. An album you could very likely fw as well would be “Sometimes I Might Be Introvert” by Little Simz. The production, thematic choices and the lyrics are just mind blowing. money trees sample silver soul by beach house, a band so phenomenal that lots of big artists actually sample their music, including crystal castles in kept.
I think you should still do Section.80 before TPAB btw, the album kinda shows you the prelude to gkmc and shows you a different soundscape as well, which might prepare for TPAB, and also section80 to gkmc alone shows you he has a musical universe that connects each album
I do appreciate your point of view on the production side of things but when it comes to storytelling albums like this it'd be nice to see you really understand what's going on in the lyrics 🙏🏼
I don't want to sound like a hater but it seemed like to me you paid a little more attention to the production than to the lyrics, I know the beats are amazing but I think the lyrics should always come first with Kendrick, especially on a concept album like this and TPAB. Music is subjective anyways so don't let me taint your enjoyment of the music 😁.
I appreciate you leaving honest feedback and I'll gladly breakdown my thought process on this one. I agree I spent the majority of this review talking about the production and the music moreso than the themes. Having only heard the singles before, it's easy to see them more as vibes (Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe) or as a party song (Swimming Pools). I also have heard Backseat Freestyle. So two of the three songs start out the album and having already perceived them as vibes moreso than storytelling, I wanted to focus on the music. It wasn't until Art of Peer Pressure that I had realized the storytelling that was happening. And then of course in Money Trees when I teared up when it started to click. By about the halfway point I was picking up the actual narrative that was taking place in the album. And then of course I cried during Sing About Me, Dying of Thirst because the entire story was really coming to light. By the end, I had realized this album may have well been a movie, literally cinematic. I never really listened to rap all that much in the first place. Having reviewed Mac and Odd Future on the channel so far, I have gotten a taste of alternative rap, but Kendricks style has been totally story driven and personal which I had not experienced yet. Out of all of the albums I have reviewed so far, this one is top 3 and I have been listening to it almost daily. Once I get into his other works I'll be sure to put more of a focus on his story telling because his music has always been on point and I don't need to point that out. Thanks again for the feedback.

I appreciate the feedback on this. I've thought about pausing in the past but songs like this are so great and dense lyrically that I'm afraid I'm going to pause after every line and these videos are going to be twice as long. But I'm going to find a way to balance it better in Section 80 and TPAB
I've been listening to this album on repeat and the lyrics are so powerful. Hard to catch everything on first listen, especially since I was approaching these albums with music as the priority. But I'll be putting storytelling first moving forward, especially with Kendrick.

The production, thematic choices and the lyrics are just mind blowing.

money trees sample silver soul by beach house, a band so phenomenal that lots of big artists actually sample their music, including crystal castles in kept.
I think you should still do Section.80 before TPAB btw, the album kinda shows you the prelude to gkmc and shows you a different soundscape as well, which might prepare for TPAB, and also section80 to gkmc alone shows you he has a musical universe that connects each album
The sad thing about Swimming Pools is that its usually played it parties where drinking is happening, when its about alcoholism.
I do appreciate your point of view on the production side of things but when it comes to storytelling albums like this it'd be nice to see you really understand what's going on in the lyrics 🙏🏼
Conceptual and lyrical wise, I find TPAB to be perfection.
After this pair, I hope you can go to one underrated classic - Kid Sees Ghost. That album is one tightly wound dynamite

Great reaction, another classic hip hop album I would recommend is Illmatic by Nas. Often regarded as the greatest hip hop album ever.

I don't want to sound like a hater but it seemed like to me you paid a little more attention to the production than to the lyrics, I know the beats are amazing but I think the lyrics should always come first with Kendrick, especially on a concept album like this and TPAB. Music is subjective anyways so don't let me taint your enjoyment of the music 😁.
I appreciate you leaving honest feedback and I'll gladly breakdown my thought process on this one.
I agree I spent the majority of this review talking about the production and the music moreso than the themes. Having only heard the singles before, it's easy to see them more as vibes (Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe) or as a party song (Swimming Pools). I also have heard Backseat Freestyle. So two of the three songs start out the album and having already perceived them as vibes moreso than storytelling, I wanted to focus on the music.
It wasn't until Art of Peer Pressure that I had realized the storytelling that was happening. And then of course in Money Trees when I teared up when it started to click. By about the halfway point I was picking up the actual narrative that was taking place in the album. And then of course I cried during Sing About Me, Dying of Thirst because the entire story was really coming to light. By the end, I had realized this album may have well been a movie, literally cinematic.
I never really listened to rap all that much in the first place. Having reviewed Mac and Odd Future on the channel so far, I have gotten a taste of alternative rap, but Kendricks style has been totally story driven and personal which I had not experienced yet. Out of all of the albums I have reviewed so far, this one is top 3 and I have been listening to it almost daily. Once I get into his other works I'll be sure to put more of a focus on his story telling because his music has always been on point and I don't need to point that out.

I appreciate the feedback on this. I've thought about pausing in the past but songs like this are so great and dense lyrically that I'm afraid I'm going to pause after every line and these videos are going to be twice as long. But I'm going to find a way to balance it better in Section 80 and TPAB

I caught the fading away portion but didn't grab the reasoning. Great choice in the song between that and the gunshot in the previous verse.

I've been listening to this album on repeat and the lyrics are so powerful. Hard to catch everything on first listen, especially since I was approaching these albums with music as the priority. But I'll be putting storytelling first moving forward, especially with Kendrick.

I'm glad people are pointing this out because I know Kendrick means a lot to so many people and his story in this album is especially deserving of its time and spotlight. Art of Peer Pressure, Money Trees and Sing About Me are my favorites on the album but I've been listening to it start to finish every time.
@@lusciousluie Sign about me is my favorite kendrick song of all time! If you listen to section 80 (his first album) there is a song on there called "Keishas Song" and it connects with the 2nd verse of "Sing About me"

I appreciate the feedback. This is a first listen, so the thoughts are going to come out the way they come out. However, I'll be keeping this in mind for more of Kendricks work. I caught a lot of the overarching themes in the album this first listen.
