  • When Busch Gardens debuted Apollo's Chariot, we'd never seen anything quite like it before. This was B&M's first hyper coaster, and laid the ground work for a long line of hypers in the decades to follow. It may not be the best, but it still holds up as a fun terrain coaster through the woods!

That last drop in the ravine is such a bonus. Everything looks like the ride is ending soon, heading back to the station.
Then boom… the gods gift one more thrill.

It's one of the things that really elevates Apollo's Chariot for me. The airtime is not as strong as rides like Mako, Diamondback, Candymonium and Goliath but the layout is more varied and is more likely to catch you off guard. And I'd put a back row night ride on Apollo's Chariot up with any of those.

I remember riding this, brand new, in May of 1999. I was 12 years old, and there was NOTHING like this at the time. For many years, it was the only coaster my parents would ride, because they said it was smooth and never banged you up like so many coasters of the past. We rode it together during tropical storms, heat, you name it - it was the only coaster that made me so fond of roller coasters and caused the obsession I have today. After more than 200+ rides on it and 200+ other roller coasters, I can safely say this remains at the top for me. It's not nearly as daring as the ones that have come after it, but there's something to be said about the setting of the coaster in the VA forestry, its choreography, and simplicity that makes it truly special. This is the only coaster I have a framed poster of from 1999 when they were being sold for a brief time at the merch kiosk at BGW. While the poster is starting to fade over time, my love for this ride and the memories it has given me from then till now are truly unforgettable.
    What a ride - forever.

Probably just how designs evolve. You don’t see predrops on new coasters much at all anymore.

They need to bring it back, it adds so much to a first drop

The pre-drop was developed as a means to reduce wear on the chain lift, prolonging its life. Once technology evolved, the need for one disappeared

Well I bet the staggered seating ones can't have a pre drop because the trains are twice as long and it would be to much whip.

Aww my first hyper that I ever rode back in 2000, and I was OBSESSED. Not even just my first B&M hyper, but my first hyper ever - and as someone who loves drops more than anything, I couldn't get enough of this one. I've gotten back a handful of times over the years, most recently 2021, and even if it's not running as smoothly as it did 20+ years ago, I love this design. I love the pre-drop, which guarantees a better full drop from any seat in the train (though the back is best), and I love that terrain design where the drop sizes vary based on where you are in the valleys. If Peter Pan, Pirates and Haunted Mansion are the classic dark rides of Disney, then this needs to be the classic B&M hyper of all time. Yes, there are better ones, but let's preserve the original!

I love this ride more than most people. I find the awesome setting, excellent night ride and more varied layout help it compared to other B&M hypercoasters (though it's certainly not my favorite B&M hypercoaster.)
Front row POVs on this thing are fun to watch but this is such a backrow ride that the POVs always seem odd to me.

This is Nitro at Great Adventure, with 2 significant differences
    1. The helix doesn’t lead to the mid course break run, it surprises you with another drop before heading into it
    2. On the return bunny hill section, there’s a curved drop and curved hill thrown in the middle of it

    • @johanlenox

@@johanlenox ok those are small and nitpicky differences that don’t particularly affect the layout. Can you seriously not see how two B&M hypers that were made in 1999 and 2001 would be similar to each other?
