Aikido technique SANKYO on strike and grip attacks, by Stefan Stenudd

  • Sankyo is one of the basic aikido pinning techniques. Here it is used against several strike and grip attacks, both the omote (front) and the ura (back) forms.
Sankyo simply means “the third technique” and is one of the basic techniques in the aikido curriculum. It’s not a throw, but a pinning technique, which is called katame waza.
In sankyo, the wrist of the attacker is twisted in a way that can be rather painful, but the pain is not the major purpose of the technique. Instead, it is to control and lead the attacker’s whole body by this grip. Excessive force should be avoided, since it is harmful to the wrist when practiced a lot.
I mostly show the techniques rather slowly, for clarity. In some cases I show the gotai form, when the attacker has completed the grip. But usually, I do the techniques jutai, where the movement starts before the attack is completed. There are some minor differences on how you move, depending on if it’s gotai or jutai.
It is important to practice both. Some holds can be quite tricky to get out of, and that needs to be tested. If you only practice jutai, you can’t be sure to manage if the attacker actually gets to grip you.

Thank you Stefan shihan, very educational video, i like your tai sabaki, the way you do the technique soft and fluid without losing the control in sankyo, and transmiting to the uke you could move faster or very slow all the time. Great uke´s work, Regards from Mexico!

Thanks Jeff. Yes, Stephan Schröder is a great uke to work with, and his work was obviously harder than mine :)

We at the club are working with this. It was interesting to see everything together at once. I would like to repeat this also alternately. I am getting an effect on the brush, but so far I am not getting a single effect on the brush-elbow-shoulder. It would be interesting to see your explanations of how to do this.😊🙏

I'm sorry, I don't understand what you mean by "brush". Can you explain?

@@StefanStenudd I'm sorry sensei. I write through a language translator.
Performing the sankyo technique, I do a hold and a painful effect on the uke's wrist (wrist joint) . However, my experienced partners easily get away from the reception, for example, by making a U-turn. They explain to me that my mistake is that I work only on the wrist, and sankyo involves the impact through the wrist, elbow and forearm on the uke's shoulder - on its center. I can't get this connection. I would like to see your actions, explanations for this.

@@andreaiki, aha, I see. I agree with your experienced partners. You need to make a connection to the partner's center. The sankyo grip creates a sort of bridge from your center to that of the partner. So, use the sankyo grip to uphold this bridge, not to create pain by twisting the hand. I think that if you concentrate on this, you will find the way to do it.
Another thing, on a practical level, is to keep the sankyo grip at about chest height, When it is lower, the partner will have stability and can counter in many ways. The partner's arm should be extended at about 90° from the body. If it is bent or lowered, the partner regains control of it.
      I hope that helps.
