    I'm a 63 y/o man, and I wept when I saw this, out of my joy and love for the fine man that is Steve Perry. The World should be so fortunate to have him once again grace the stage. I pray that his health should continue to grow, and that we all can once again be blessed with his performances.

    Hysterical the negative comments about his "lacking" performance. You all make it sound like he came out and sounded like a cat with a live, screeching rat in his throat. That's fine. I'll take a 20-years-of-rust Steve Perry over whatever present-day auto-tuned hero the sad excuse for a music industry throws at the public.

      I agree with you 100% Robert. He was and is still amazing. As for this performance it was great. Put him in studio and he would sound even more amazing. For anyone that can only find fault with his performance, here's an idea..... don't watch it or better yet, sit down and look back over your career, count your money, make a tape of yourself singing, look in the mirror and see if you look as "hot" as you think you did yrs ago. He has had and will continue to have a fantastic career. How is your career going? How many fans do you have? What have you accomplished in your life and who cares? Perry is an icon!

      That is so wonderful to hear that he is in great health. I have been a die hard Steve Perry fan since I was about 7 (about 40 years)....and when I heard about his health problems - well, you always fear the worse. I don't know if you have ever heard of Chris LeDoux, he was a country singer. I was only 1/2 the fan of his music as I am of Steve's....and I was pretty torn up when he died so young.
      To hear that "The Voice" is health and happy makes me very happy.

      It was more like they were too greedy to wait for him to have surgery and heal. I had read or heard that he had originally come to them with the idea to do a new album and tour, because quite a few of the band members were doing badly money wise, but in the middle got ill and needed down time for surgery and to get well.
      They started in the studio, I heard that he would go lay down during sets because he was in so much pain and when he asked for the time, they wouldn't wait and replace him with the 1st "Steve wannabe", then got the 2nd "Steve wannabe" later. I've heard them sing a duet on RUclips and can tell you that Arnold doesn't have the range that Steve does.

    Well...it's been two days and I still can't wipe the smile off of my face. Steve sounds great. He is not 1978 great...he is not 1983 or 1986 great or even 1994 great. He is 2014 great. His signature voice with all of the emotion, power and control...all of the deep melodic nuances is still there. He works the stage as great as he always did. Interacting with the crowd and just being Steve as only Steve can be. He is, and always will be, the very best there ever was. Critics be damned...you just DON'T GET IT!!! This is the voice of a lifetime... our lifetime, and it is magnificent!!! Welcome back Mr. Perry. I look forward to some new music from The Voice. :)

    I don't see why anyone is saying that he sounds bad. He really doesn't, he's just singing an octave lower. It's still his voice, and still his sound. People expect absolute perfection all the time from music these days. It's not about mimicking the original song completely, it's about the soul behind it... and Steve here most certainly has soul.

      You really think he could tour today? Really?
      Listen to him now, then listen to Arnel. The choice any rational person would make is very clear. Hint: It wouldn't be Perry.
      Look, Perry was great. He will forever be associated with Journey. But if you were to be honest with yourself, you'd accept his voice now is really not that great.
      Like Elton John, it's time to end the charade and let it be.

      James Rudd Perry don't need to sing his back catalog for a tour if he toured he could sing R&B for his more soulful voice and in his range.Arnel is having voice problems just like Augeri did before him..With more singing I say his Voice would be close to TBF which was nominated a grammy .He never had any singing back up also until LTS when he said help them out.Right now Perry is getting good reviews from every major news outlet from cbs to cnn.

    • @alisonperkins4825
      @alisonperkins4825 10 лет назад +1

      James Rudd Mr. Perry has a full-bottom voice--like fine wine. His voice is not thin, and his voice is not ravaged like Whitney Houston's in 2010. And to Mr. Perry's credit he did not indulge in drugs.
      As far as people's attitude is, I certainly don't want to be kicked from my band when my voice ages or if I get arthritis and can't play the way I used to. As far as Mr. Perry vs. Mr. Pineda: please view Mr. Perry's version of "Mother, Father". Mr. Pineda does not sing that song. I wonder why.
      Mr. Perry should perform again and tour again. He has nothing to be ashamed of. He has no business trying to compete with Arnel or try to be what he was 30 years ago. Mr. Perry's voice is still beautiful and with work with a vocal therapist and a vocal coach, he would be amazing.

    I keep coming back to this because of how it made me feel when it first happened....like I'd stepped outside and found a unicorn on my porch---magical. It's not about how Mr.Perry sounds, or how he looks; it's not about what he sang or who he sang with. It's not about the fans (we weren't invited) and it sure as shit isn't about Journey or any of their other singers. It's about the guy finding the joy in his own gift for the love of the gift itself...for himself. How fortunate are we to have been witness to this.

    The date of this performance makes sense since Steve's late-girlfriend, psychologist Dr. Kellie Nash passed away of breast cancer in 2012 and she made Steve promise that he would not go into seclusion. This was a big step for him.

    PS - No offense to Arnel but the "Journey" ended when Perry got off the bus! And yes there was Journey before THE VOICE but they never would have made it or stood the test of time without Perry (they say so themselves). And YES I know that Rolie and Schon were in Santana (note that Santana went on without them and is still doing fine). But Steve Perry's chemistry with the band in song writing and bringing the songs to life is what made them great. His voice was and still is special. If you can't see that God rested His hand on Steve's shoulder just a little longer, then you're missing something.

    • @kvong615
      @kvong615 9 лет назад

      AdoptionSpots that's my point. Playing music is the band's bread and butter, their career. For what ever reason perry did not come back the band had to do what they had to do to make money and just to play again. Just because you and some other people don't like the band now cause Perry isn't thier. You think they care? There's plenty of fans still enjoy them now just as good as before. They still filling up stadiums. Yes Arnel isn't Perry. But journey called him, and he took the opportunity and ran with it. Wouldn't you? Perry is a great vocalist, but it's to bad that people talk bad about Arnel cause he's trying to be perry.

    • @kvong615
      @kvong615 9 лет назад

      kvong615 Arnel isn't trying to be perry. He's singing the song the way it was written respectfully without butchering it.

    • @BarbaraHill26
      @BarbaraHill26 9 лет назад +1

      kvong615 Perry didn't "leave" -- he was the one that got them all back together to make the last album they made together but they couldn't tour because of his hip. They could have waited for him to get his health back together but they had financial issues that Perry wasn't facing -- either way, it's history. Bottom line is that I have no interest in Journey without him. I was more a Perry fan than a Journey fan. think of it that way and maybe you'll understand.

    I would have been awestruck had I been there this night. To everyone saying Steve sucked this night...you have no idea what it means to rest your vocals for 25 years and then randomly try to use them. From a technical stand point, he did freaking amazing with what he could. I know that over time he will just improve. I am so very thankful for finding this and seeing that he did produce and release another album "Traces".....his voice will forever be my favorite male artist. I have grown up listening to him. I will keep listening to him, for as long as I can. I think in time we will all see the mature vocals of Steve Perry are in fact still just as amazing as they were before. I can not wait to see what he does next.

      Exactly! I wish I had more to add to what you said, but you absolutely right: this was not meant to be a "breakout performance," it was him walking onstage after decades away from public appearances. You can't just start up a Porche 911 after 25 years and expect it to run 0-100 the way it did when it rolled off the lot. You have to tune it up first!

      Absolutely right - I think there may well have been a reason he stopped singing in 1995 when he still sounded fantastic with much of his range and power in tact - regardess of possible voice damage this is nearly 20 years later! Steve freely admits he cant get close to what he termed his olympic singing days, but theres nothing wrong in in dropping some semi tones - he might have been advised to spend 3 months with a vocal coach before attempting this but even so the quality still shines through this less than perfect recording - perhaps the greatest rock singer of his generation

    Call me crazy ..but at age 65 I am completely shocked he is this good. He is an octave lower but it's still the signature Steve Perry sound. I was expecting an Axl Rose type of "out of tune" mess that he's been known for the last few years.

    Listen from 9:40 onwards, he goes up to a B5/C6 (Soprano High C), so possibly as high as he has ever sung live, including his 70s and 80s countertenor years. Mindblowing to think that a 65 year old guy can still do that!

      D.B. Martin Holy hell I accidentally replied to the wrong Journey video. That comment was for Arnel who's got a tenor range but has this subtle difference in his vocal (tone?). In the 70s Perry was countertenor, then he slowly went down the range little by little because of constant use and aging.

    Folks. It doesn't matter who the singer is. After a certain age, your voice is not the same as 25-30 years ago. It's just a natural progression of getting older. I loved his performance. oh, okay, this is really bad of me - but he really WAS the voice of Journey. They would have just been another band, but his voice is what set them apart from the rest. I will say that Neal and Jonathan were very instrumental in the creative aspect. But then again, when they wouldn't wait for him to have surgery and recover - they went out and found a "Steve sound-a-like". So I don't think he could have a problem forming a band. Only question would be, is he physically healthy enough after all he has been thru the last several years.
