I remember playing this on floppy discs in elementary school. For those of us who made it to side B, we were regarded as gods among the the rest of the classmates because it was so hard to stay alive long enough to get halfway through the game

Couple tips from an OG Oregon Trailer:
Play as the farmer if you want the highest score. Less money but all your points get multiplied at the end.
If the river is shallow enough, ford it. Fording just means rolling right through the water. Less than 5 feet or so and you should be fine.
I know it's not great for speedrunning, but hunting is the best part of the game.
The rafting section at the end has always been in the game as far as I know. I've seen at least half a dozen different versions from blocky green screen Atari 2600 esque up to 90s era.

Funny story actually, back in my 3rd grade computer class, my teacher had us play this game, and our grade turned it into a semi gambling ring where we would bet on 2 people, whoever beat it faster than the other person would win 50% of the all of the bets, and the people who bet would split the their share depending on who bet the most. I had the 3rd fastest time which was around the lower end of 9 minutes, and the fastest kid had a time somewhere in the 7 minute range, the best kid at the game made somewhere between 250 - 400 dollars + plus other miscellaneous stuff like Pokémon cards before our school found out and shut the game down due to someone betting their mom’s wedding ring and losing their bet. Never thought I would see this game ever again, good times.

My family came to Oregon on the Oregon trail and became farmers and part of the apple gate trail comes through some of our land and there used to be some ruts from the wagons

If you can activate the river minigame instead of other options it really saves your stuff. I seem to remember doing it twice in a run.... but it was one of the two "educational" games on a middleschool computer, so i could be misremembering that. On a speedrun it would cost time on the clock though.

When going across rivers, the depth and distance across 1 side to another sets the base lines on what happens and then I think it rolls what happens. Also, something that it's nice is that every ferry only cost 5$ which is really nice, plus the banker is really the only choice because picking banker quadruples your starting cash

As someone who lives in Oregon this game was the game we played at least once a Year. So basically I'm a master.
I live in Oregon too, never played it once which is odd. But we did have an entire unit dedicated to it and my class rode in an actual Oregon trail wagon so that was cool
bro my 5th grade teacher introduced me to the game. I would’ve beat it first try if my sister didn’t click the turn off button. I still won on my second try and my teacher didn’t believe me bc, apparently, it’s a “very difficult game” and he’s never beat it in his childhood. please tell me if it’s supposed to be that hard bc I don’t think it’s supposed to be that hard🤷♀️

last time I played OT, I just bought spare parts, bullets and almost no food. I spent the whole game hunting way too much, selling most of the excess food to buy more bullets and spare parts. One kid died, everyone else made it. I don't remember which version I played, but it was an older one, so hunting was fairly easy, but even some older versions have super difficult hunting.

My strat for this game back in the day was to be the farmer, grueling pace, and meager rations until I got to the point where you raft down river to the final stop. Then I'd wait with filling rations until I had good health. Good times. High scores.

I played this game in school in the late 80s and early 90s and it was one of my favorite games unfortunately it usually took me about an hour to get through it because I didn’t understand that about speed runs. It’s been in excess of 28 years since I played that game

I did the windows 3.1 game in like 4 and a half minutes in 1991 or 92. Grueling pace, meagar rations, river run.
And the hunting glitch.
