    Despite "everybody saying" that you can't use GE Silicone 2 in your aquaria, you can. It's perfectly safe provided you use it properly, which can also be said for GE silicone I, which everyone recomends.

    Google : GE Silicone 2 SDS. He is right that the SDS doesn't specifically state it contains mold inhibitors.
    Silicone is an inert substance, it doesn't leach when submerged. My babies bottle nipples are mare out of silicone for crying out loud.
    The difference is that Silicone 2 releases ammonia as it cures. So whoever has problems with Silicone 2 killing fish didn't let it cure properly. If you submerge it before it's 100% cured, it will cause problems. Dry does not equal cured, which is where I bet a lot of people mess up.
    The only time silicone releases substances that are harmful, such as formaldehyde, is when it's heated to 150C.

    I contacted a company (not GE) about their 100% silicone, mould resistant, and they replied it "contains anti fungal ingredients that help prevent mould growth. These additives can be harmful to fish and other aquatic life". I did this because my fish were slowly dying 5 days after I installed the ornament I'd made with it. Clearly it was not 100% silicone. I should have known when the fish wouldn't go near the ornament, ever.

I panicked and ordered all new pvc pipe AND new silicone (the GE 2) for over $50 and plan to redo the entire decoration. I was so proud of how it turned out and now I'm considering throwing it out! I'm at a loss!!!! I don't know WHAT to do!!!!! :'( And now you're saying that my decoration is SAFE for my fishes???? I'm terrified of it now. I'm not saying it's dangerous to fish but I don't use it because the manufacturer says not to. I feel like that is part liability (CYA) but if it was as safe as Silicone 1 GE would have no issue saying it was aquarium safe. To me that's just common sense. As it stands you are not risking anyones fish but your own and to you that's an acceptable risk... Everybody makes choices and I respect that. Looking forward to the next video.

    • @ka4dps
      @ka4dps 5 лет назад +1

      Gerald, I love your thinking, but Silicone 1 , like every version of Silicone I've seen people use for aquariums except official "aquarium use" Silicone, says, "Not for use below the water line or in aquariums." I have seen some exception for "not for use below the water line." But, of the six brands, and numerous versions of the brands, they all say not recommended for aquariums.
      DAP has some that actually say they comply with FDA, but they still say, not for aquariums.
      I think the reason for the CYA is the possibility of a leak and being liable for massive damages in places like apartments where 200 gallons can damage two or three floors and displace two or more families during repair time.

      Donald Soles no I haven’t had any major issues other than perfecting the amount of silicone to use for the structures. I’ve made multiple iterations of my designs to make the silicone less obvious while also maintaining structural stability. However I’ve been using my silicone in a tank with a few turtles and some very hardy fish like koi and native sunfish, so I’d still be careful if you’re planning on using them for any delicate, sensitive and/or expensive fish species.

    This video is giving wrong information based on two misunderstandings:
    1) 100% silicone does not mean what he thinks it does . Caulk comes in three varieties Silicone, Acrylic Latex, and a mix. all 100%Silicone means is that there is no Acrylic in in , not that its actually got nothing but silicone in it. In fact, as a reading of the sds makes clear.it does.
    2) the sds never states what the ingredients are for, just what they are, so the fact that it doesn't say mold inhibitor means nothing.
    when I called up the sds for silicone 2 I got this:

    This video is simply wrong. Ge wants to sell more caulk not less, so they're not pretending they have mold inhibitors when they don't.
    This video is irresponsible and should be taken down, GE has settled the issue, you cant use this for aquariums.

      The #1 releases acetic acid (vinegar) while it's curing, so it's hard to work with indoors, especially in large quantities like I was doing. #2 produces a bit of ammonia and methanol, so it doesn't burn my eyes.
      #1 is better for bonding glass to glass, but #2 is better at bonding to non-glass surfaces. (so I've been told) I'd use #1 to reseal tanks, but use ventilation.

    This topic needs a lot more research/testing/experimenting throughout this community, especially if GE silicone 1 also usually says it isn't safe for aquariums. But, looking through these comments for example, it's extremely clear that one type of silicone has a dramatically worse reputation with people who've used it compared to the other type of silicone. You'd have to be intentionally willfully ignorant not to see that.
    There's no remotely clear consensus or verdict on this, and there won't be for a very long time. That doesn't sit well with me. I can't in good conscience trust GE2 and I can't recommend that any of you do either.

  • @jiarealty
    @jiarealty 4 года назад

    Absolutely do not use GE Silicone 2 for your tank. Unlike GE silicone 1 which when cured leaves an acetic acid (Vinegar) residue which in low concentration is safe for your fish, GE silicone 2 when dries leaves behind methanol (wood alcohol- extremely toxic to all life) and Ammonia (deadly to fish). I used GED silicone 2 in my aquarium, let it cure for 7 days, add water and rinsed it out, and add new water and let it age for 3 days. Added my discus fish in, within 5 minutes they started to breath hard, within 10 minutes started gasping for air. Took them all out right away but still lost 5 out of 14 discus fish. It's not the additives in GE 2 that kills mold, it's the methanol and ammonia residue it leaves behind when cured that inhibits mold. GE 2 should never be used in aqaurium because it's "pure" silicone. This is a different "low" vapor formulation that is actually deadly.
