New GE1 Silicone - Is it still fish and aquarium safe?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 18 авг 2024
- In this video I did a little research to try and find out if the new GE1 silicone is still fish safe so that we can continue using this silicone to reseal aquariums as well as use it for other aquarium-related projects
repair or rebuild your aquariums at your own risk I take no responsibility for any flooding, damages, or loss/death of tank inhabitants that may occur from your handiwork or from products that you may use including ones talked about in this video.

I researched this issue and found out the product is exactly the same. Thank you trafish for confirming this!
Your very welcome!
I was stressing out because I couldn't find the silicone in the old packaging and wasn't sure if the silicone I just purchased was safe for aquarium use. Thank you SO MUCH for reassuring me that the formula hasn't changed!
Your welcome
Great piece of investigation and low key a very valuable video. A lot of blogs etc are just assuming they reformulated it making it questionable/unsuitable for aquariums. Thanks for this.
Your welcome 😁
Yesss! Thank you so much for reaching out to them to confirm the safety of the silicone!
I needed this. I was thrown off by the packaging as well and was the reason I went with the ASI sealant. Good to know that the GE 1 can still be used for lesser needs.
Thank you for researching the safety of the product. I just got back from Home Depot and was totally confused about what was safe. Your research cleared up what is safe to use.
your welcome
Me too! Exactly! Thanx for this! 💖
Thank you for taking the time to research the product. I'm currently in the process of resealing a 55 gallon tank I recently bought and was at my local hardware store when I noticed the change on the packaging. I confused because of the new labeling wording and the warning on the back stating not to use on aquariums.
Again thanks for the update.
Your welcome!
Thank you, I'm making my first aquarium and was really worried about that. I was so confused about why it changed and if it was still safe, this helped so much
Your welcome! Glad it was helpful
@@TrafishAquatics I've just subscibed to your channel and love your content. I do have a question. Is GE all purpose =the one featured in your video- enough to seal a 126 gallon tank? Thanks!
Thank you for clearing up the change!!
I'd been thru too many videos on YT of ppl running at the mouth for ten mins or more just to inevitably not say anything of value about aquarium safe silicone or even tell you which one they use lol
Your quite welcome!
Getting ready to reseal a 75 gallon tomorrow, I vent say thank you enough for this info.
I reference this video all the time for the people that think it's unsafe. Without knowing the whole story. Good video.
Thank you!
thanks for doing the research on this issue. I have put off fixing a tank for a couple years now because of the GE silicone I question (or the place is still out of stock). And, I could never get an informed or give 1/2 a shit answer from anyone working at the big box stores. I'm a subscriber now, Dude.
Your welcome, much appreciated!
Omg thanks bro I've been everywhere looking for aquarium safe silicone where I'm from and it was a headache to find 1. Been searching around online concerning ge1 because of this same problem and all I found was arguments and confusion about this product. My sincerest thanks for reaching out to the manufacturers and getting the info for your fellow aquarist.
You're the man I was keep myself up all night wondering whether my fish were all going to die because I recently had lost a fish after i add the new silicone I let it cure for 2 days before adding water now it's been about one days after the fish died and all I could think of in the back of my mind was the 7 years mold-free label making me think otherwise but thanks man it really help keep me at peace of mind maybe now I can get some sleep laugh out loud
Your welcome, glad I could help!
Thanks I was here at Lowe’s freaking out.
Thanks! I had the same question walking around the hardware store the other day.
Thanks so much. I was troubled I couldn’t find silicone 1 without the 7 years mold free verbiage!
I never even thought twice about it. Just resealed my 90 gallon with the new ge1 silicone.
Nice!
Hey, just want to say thanks (3 years later!) for the info, it's real helpful, got a subscriber just for being informative. Thanks again.
yes its the same I have resealed many aquariums with it, since the label has changed. No it doesn't have mold inhibitors, it says on the top of the back of the tube "It's resistant to unsightly strain causing mildew growth because its permanently flexible." As in if it was used on a house and the foundation moved a little it should still not crack and brake down so mold will grow. The main thing you want to make sure of that the old silicone, skin oil, and dirt have been removed before applying the new silicone a black light and acetone is very helpful with this. I also says that it should be used at least 65 Fahrenheit not over 120 Fahrenheit with at lest 50% Humidity, it also says that UV rays will not brake down the silicone. However I think it's best to not do outside to play it safe, I live in Texas and I reseal my tanks in the summer when it's hot outside over 100 Fahrenheit with high Humidity. I have found that it works out better doing it in the summer time, I leave the aquarium in the garage for a week, even though I know it will cure in 48 hours. The aquariums that I resealed in the winter or spring seemed to end up leaking down the line.
What got me is the packaging says "not aquarium safe" on the back! I'm assuming now it must be more of a legal protection in case of damages or something. I was about to return mine once I saw that, glad I did some digging, and thankfully this channel did the research which is awesome lol thanks to you both.
Yep thats exactly it, your welcome
This video is three years old. I hope the info is still current though, and true? Thank you so much for sharing your findings on this.
Good info man. I am re-sealing a 300 gal tank and bought this thinking it was the same as the old just new packaging. You confirmed it, really appreciate the research!!
Personally for a tank of that size I would reccomend a stronger sealant like ASI or ge scs1200
I am using GE 1200. I agree and have the other for other projects
@@phillandall3159 ok awesome
can I use the GE 1 for a 125 gal tank!?
Thanks a lot for this i am setting up a new planted tank and was putting slate on driftwood and seen the new label and was like ol' crap 7 year mold free. Thanks for doing the research i was kinda stuck on what to do!!!
You're very welcome
Just watched this video after going on a trip to Home Depot and seen this new labeling and of course when I asked the young man about aquarium safe silicone so he agreed with the manufacturer to not use on aquariums. Really wished I seen this video before going there and not paying to much information on the labeling. This like you mentioned is all about them not wanting to get sued from consumers is correct and I do believe like most products that are around for a long time if it still works then why change something. Like the old saying if it ain't broke then why fix it. I have been in the hobby for many years and I have always thought that people that are marketing always try and change the wording in there as to bring in new customers by adding things to draw the people in. So I have sealed many aquariums before and I always went by 100% silicone being safe for aquariums no matter which brand which any additives in any case would not really harm fish as when it cures your final product is the rubbery stuff that holds your window panes together correct. I always had heard that GE was always recommended and to think the stores always have people that really don't have a clue what they are selling.
That's exactly right, manufacturers only care about making money so whatever draws people in and makes them more money is what they're going to do regardless.
I'm glad you made this video it helped a lot of fish owners because the other silicone is really expensive... I use that Silicon
Thank you!
Your welcome
Thanks for doing the legwork on this one!
It's good you shot them an email and they got back I went to Home Depot today and it seems like they have hundreds of different silicones but in the end none of them said they were aquarium safe I went home and got online and order two big tubes of ASI silicone I don't mind spending a little extra money I know it's good stuff and I know it's safe for my saltwater fish tank I do not want to take any chances good video
what a relief.... great job thank you. I will pass all to all.
Your welcome
Thank you for doing the leg work and making this video!!
I typically do not comment or leave likes. But I just resealed my aquarium with the new GE1 Silicone. Stressing if it would hurt my turtle. I'm going let it cure for a full week, fill it with water and filter it through. But I'm so glad you did the research. You are my first Like! :) Thank you so much.
Thank you
Any problems with you setup after using this? Thanks in advance
dude, you're amazing. I was unsure of what was safe to use. Thanks

Thank you so much for this video 3 weeks ago I went to lowe's I was going too silicone some lava rock to some pvc with my son for his fish tank & all we saw was the mold free 1 so to be safe we didn't get it. Now we know. Again thank you 👍👍

Thanks so much the video. I’ve been so confused on this topic. Great explanation!!!
This video has been so helpful to me. I'm building a background for my crested gecko and ran out of vivarium safe silicone. I bought this silicone and then panicked after reading about the mold inhibitors.

Thanks for info
😂 just looking at the silicone an websites told be to use this silicone but nothing with mold inhibitor and I was Soo confused!! Thank you lol

Bought Ge in red tube for plastic and more plastic. It is call 💯 silicone. And it for glass and more. Water tight seal. And I removed it from glass very hard to removal. It sticks
Didn't watch this originally, but now I need to know🙂
It's definitely good information to know
Great video.
How long would I need to let this silicone sit and cure when attaching a 3d foam background, before adding fish?
Thank you for the very helpful video!
Your welcome
Merci !
You're welcome
I just watched your video and was wondering why they put on the label "NOT RECOMMENDED FOR UNDERWATER/AQUARIUM USE?
Did GE say anything about packaging?
Thx for the video.
I covered this in the video, It basically protects themselves against poor workmanship by the purchaser. They said they just updated the packaging to reflect more accurate data but the contents have not changed
I just built aquascape using GE1 and they added 7 years mold free on the label.. But its still the same.. Tank been running over 2 months and no problems
Cool, it's the same formula so it should be fine!
nice, appreciate ya man
Thorough! Trafish P.I.
😆
Thank you for this video.
I was wondering though dose the color of the silicone matter?
Dose it matter if it’s clear, white or black or dose that just come down to preference?
thank you bro you solved my concerns about the new ge1 packaging 😀😀😀
Your welcome!
The back of the new GE1 says "NOT FOR AQIARIUM USE" though....?
It says not for aquarium use because they don't want people to use it in their aquarium and then have the aquarium leak and have the person that did the reseal come back after the company saying the silicones faulty. If they put not for use in aquariums on there and you use it in an aquarium you can't go back after them because they told you not to do it. It's basically just to cover their own butt.
@@TrafishAquatics could be the same scenario but instead of a leak you have your fish/reptiles die....?🤔
Pretty much, I've used this GE1 with no I'll effects as it's no different than the original packaging.
I was looking at the back of the GE1 silicone and it said not for underwater/ aquarium use.
Yes this is just to protect them from poor craftsmanship on the buyers part, if it didnt say that you could go back after them if the product fails due to user error
You are a hero sir
Thanks 😆
Thank u great video
You're welcome!
Nice! Good to know

i basically just resealed my 90g tank with the new GE silicone and i saw your video, i was "uh oh"
Yeah you're good to go lol
@@TrafishAquatics almost gave me a heart attack until 3:13.. lol
😅
You should have asked them about GE2 having biocides in it. According to the SDS it does not. The only difference in 1 and 2 is the curing chemistry. 1 puts off acetic acid as it cures and 2 puts off ammonia. The main reason for the difference is that 2 is made for bathrooms so basically a small confined space. The strong acetic acid smell from 1 is quite unpleasant. GE2 puts off ammonia which is worse but it's much less of it so overall has less perceivable odor. Both should be perfectly safe for fish once fully cured. This is KEY. It can take days to FULLY cure and people jump the gun. GE1 will also cure faster in general. Both are moisture curing so require moisture from the air. Thick sections of silicone skins over and drastically slows curing to the center. High humidity and higher temperatures cure faster. Also the two chemistries adhere better to different substrates. Use GE1 for glass to glass.
Yep exactly, the only thing i can think of is the ammonia vs the acetic acid would add some preserving/cleansing property to the silicone which results in the extra 3 years
It makes me wonder why they don't write "aquarium safe" on it.. they could sell so much more
Probably cheaper to avoid it due to individual craftsmanship issues, plus the small window of aquarium repairers vs thier normal demographic doesn't make it worth thier effort.
Accidentally got the white instead of clear, is it still safe to use?
i need to use BLACK COLOR SILICONE that must be AQUARIUM SAFE... can black silicone be used ?
THANK U FOR DOING THE HARD WORK I WOULDNT HAVE DONE LOL
Your welcome
Yet on the back is clearly states not for aquarium use. which im sure is for legal reason but it deffinitly put alot of doubt in peoples minds.
Yep just for legal reasons
The tube also clearly says "NOT FOR UNDERWATER/AQUARIUM USE" I'm so confused
The only reason that's on there is because they do not want to be held responsible for if the aquarium that you were to build or reseal was to fail. If it said for aquarium use and you built a tank with it and the tank was to fail because of the silicone letting go You may have the ability to hold a lawsuit against the company because their product failed. So they put not for aquarium use to cover themselves.
Great to know
Your welcome
They make this exact same thing in black is that safe for sealing a aquarium?
Should be, the only difference between the 1 and 2 silicone is the curing compound, 1 is acetic acid and 2 is ammonia
@@TrafishAquatics thank you 👍 im going to try it and see how it goes
Sounds good, it should be perfectly fine, just give it a week to cure
In the back, it says not for underwater/aquarium use. So it is still okay to use?
Yes the only reason it says that is so that if you do a poor job at presealing you can't go back after the company for a failed product
So I am curious your thoughts on this. I just picked up some black silicone 1 after watching this video and confirming it was safe and the same product still despite the packaging.
I don’t know if this was already mentioned, but the new packaging states “not recommended for underwater/aquarium use” at the bottom of the instructions paragraph.
Now I am wondering, is this a warning statement due to the hazards involved if someone doesn’t seal their aquarium correctly? Or is this a statement based on something in the silicone not being safe for use in aquariums? I don’t remember this statement on the old packaging. What do you think?
It was on the old packaging as well, it's just a statement to cover themselves incase you do a poor reseal job and the tank leaks that you can't blame the product, it still works perfectly fine for aquarium use, I've used this on many tanks with no issues
@@TrafishAquatics amazing thank you for the quick response. That’s what my initial thought was, but really wanted to double check before I went for it. Thanks for all your help!
Your welcome
OK. So if silicone is in itself mold free, then the GE 2 would also be safe, right? They were just labeling it differently to make buyers THINK they were getting a mold free product, even thought they are BOTH mold free. I mean, why would they add mold inhibitors to a product that is mold free to begin with????!!?! I am so confused!!!!!
GE silicone I is an acid cure, meaning that acetic acid (vinegar) is the curing agent. That is why you smell the vinegar smell. GE silicone II is ammonia cure, meaning that ammonia is the curing agent. Silicone I needs 24 to 48 hours to cure. Silicone II needs 7 days or more. the ammonia is what they use as a mold inhibitor because there's going to be residual ammonia left in the silicone to prevent mold and mildew. because of this the ammonia can reach into the aquarium causing ammonia spikes which could be enough to kill your fish. Because of this is not generally recommended. some people claim that they've used it with no issues while others have had horror stories (This was likely due to not allowing the silicone to cure fully). So generally you're better off avoiding it, especially since GE1 silicone is actually stronger than GE2 anyway.
So English is my second language and I did not understand the whole video ,so can I use the new GE#1 silicone please ?
Yes
@@TrafishAquatics thank you sr I gonna subscribe in your channel now
Thank you!
I share this video all the time. So much confusion on ge1
Awesome thank you!
Went to buy GE silicone1 but it says on the label not recommended for aquarium use... What is up with that?
Its just to protect them against customer poor craftsmanship
@@TrafishAquatics thanks for your reply
Can you use that in the canister filter as well
Once it's cured its safe anywhere in aquarium use, even a canister

Thanks, I don't have a Facebook page specifically for the channel just my own personal Facebook.
@@TrafishAquatics okay great video hope too see more of them
For sure I try to post once to twice a week
Have you tried it yourself since this video?
Yep ive resealed 2 tanks with this since the video and have had not a single issue, I actually use it in the video where I show how to replace an aquarium frame to reseal the tank and put the new frame on.
can I use it for a 125 gal tank???
I used it on a 150 so id say yes
@@TrafishAquatics Thank you!!! I wasn't 100% sure... Now I can start resealing🔝👌
It doesnt last. I sealed an aquarium a year ago, and its nearly gone
Interesting, I've sealed well over 20 aquariums over the past few years and have never had any degradation on any of the tanks I've done it with. Aquariums were 20 gallons to 150 gallons.

Absolutley, this is what I've used on all my 55gal reseals!
Trafish Aquatics thank you!!
Your welcome!
Trafish Aquatics how many tubes would you recommend buying?
For a 55 gal I only ever use 3/4 of a tube but you could get 2 tubes if you don't feel as comfortable
how long this shit takes to cure?
About 72 hours if well ventilated
@@TrafishAquatics thank you.
so waiting 72 hours would be ideal before exposing it to water?
@@snivvelslurderagementai2560 yes that is what i would wait, it will be dry to the touch within 24 but with a test i did it took 72 to fully cure all the way into the corners
@@TrafishAquatics
yeah thanks again. I'm actually using it for a washing machine seal install. because I just didn't have anything else on hand.
I applied a thick bead about 1 inches so it'll probably take even longer than 72 hours to cure for me.
