    It true. It killed one of my bettas. Story goes I had a tank leak. So I took him out and put him in an established tank while I resealed the tank. So I bought #2 and sealed it. A couple days later I set it back up and put him back in. He went straight to the bottom and laid there. I used the same water from the tank he was in for the past 2 days so he wouldn’t be shocked. Didn’t think anything of it so I left him in and the next morning he was at the surface gasping for air and looked really pale in color. So I took him out thinking something was wrong with the water and put him back in the established tank for 3 days and he bounced right back. So I washed the tank out real good with hot water. I don’t ever use chemicals to clean my tanks so I wasn’t sure why he reacted badly. Anyhow it was late so I set it up again and put him in and went to bed. Again with same water he was in for comfort. He was dead in the morning. Come to find out he was being poisoned by the silicone. This was a nano tank so maybe the poison was more concentrated than in a large tank. All I know is I’ll never use GE#2 again

    How long should it take for a large wad of silicone to actually fully cure? For example, if I create a large structure from inert expanding foam, carve the smooth layer off, then use a thick enough layer of silicone to attach cork bark/sand/dirt to it.
    So, for relatively proper and common uses like that in our hobby where a relatively high amount of silicone is needed in 1 area, how long is safe for a full cure? I'm sure waiting a full month like I've seen someone say would be overkill levels of safe, but realistically, what's a good amount of time?

    Do you know the reason why they would have two products that are both 100% silicone but cure differently ? Is the acid created from a reaction or is it the carrier of the silicone that just evaporates off ?
    I'm asking because I want to use this for mold making and I want a product that has the least chance of causing health problems from the fumes while mixing .even though the acid may be strong , is it more or less toxic while curing than number 2?

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly
      @DanHiteshew-oneandonly  3 года назад

      I don't think either one is much danger. Silicone 1 produces what's essentially vinegar, and number 2 produces a bit of ammonia. Marketing is the only reason I can think they do it different ways.

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly

    I shouldn't have listened to tyour advice. Made a small cave with lava washed lava rocks and GE silicone 2 . Maybe its because I don't have a heavily planted tank like you and it did not filter out the toxins. I used type 2 from GE and let it cure for over 24 hours. and 3 dempseys 2 convicts 2 plecos died withing 24 hours. Before that t the fish were fully energetic and active and eating normally. Thank goodness the fish were small so I did not lose a lot of money. only about 20 bucks.

      I have no first hand information about this but I found a post over on fishforums.net (user was raptorrex back in 2006) that says that curing times are based on a bead 1 cm wide by 1 cm deep and that any silicone deeper than that will not cure at all. If that is so, and again I do not know personally, then when making a cave - might you have gotten some big blobs going? I dunno - just tossing that out there. 1 cm is a pretty thick bead I'll grant so .....

    I just made the mistake of using some of this to repair my tank leak. I knew something was wrong immediately when I put the fish in (it had only been 24 hrs); took them back out and back to their temporary arrangements, then waited a week, just put them back in yesterday. There was no amonia before I put them in, within two hours the amonia had spiked and they were acting lethargic and hanging out at the top of the tank. I did a 50% water change, little improvement. Just moved them back into temporary quarters. . . Am I ever going to be able to use this tank, or do I need to scrape what I used off and start over? The fish are clearly indicating that something is wrong with the water in that tank even after one week

      #2 is 100% silicon. Silicon by itself is mold mildew resistant to a certain extent. I have mostly used GE silicon #2 for aquariums because I generally want brown for permanently attaching slate tiles or 3D universal rocks backgrounds. All you have to do is let it cure properly then let it hold water, drain, full, & repeat several times & then let the tank properly cycle.

    • @margyg
      @margyg 2 года назад

      @@xKenn I let mine cure for over 1 week, then fill with water & let it sit a few days, do that twice, set it up, let it cycle then change water. Use a danio or something to check a few days before adding my fish. If any silicon gets wet while curing it will become a gooey mess & never cure properly.
      But asi aquarium silicon can be purchased by the caulk tube on Amazon for the same as the other GE silicone. Their website says to cure 1 weeks for aquarium silicon as well. If you have any silicon that is behind say a background that isn't exposed that will take much longer.
