you just taught me something new about my camera I spent 10 years scared to do video because my manual focus skills aren't always great and I get home with blurred footage. now you broke that fear for me I thank you from bottom of my heart!!
What I read was that one of the best ways around this was to use a wide angle lens when shooting. Next select a focal point about 3 feet away. Then lock this focal setting. The result is achieved because of the Depth of Field capabilities of a wide angle lens. This is one technique I have seen used when shooting underwater and you have all that gear on (large gloves, panning a large sea creature, etc.). The Meltdownman
just got the camera two hours ago. its my first non-digital camera ever and im just overwhelmed by all these adjustable things O_O . man i wanted a pro camera and i sure got one. This video helped me a lot! Thanks!
Thanks! I recently upgraded from a t1i to a 5Dmk2, and I was boggled that the t1i could auto-focus with the AF-ON button, but my 5Dmk2 did not, after I watched your video I realized that I had the setting for "Quick" instead of 'Live", changed it and voila! thanks man!
I think this is a good bit of information. The issue with focusing on the live screen is that its nearly impossible to see the screen when shooting outside, so you almost have to rely on a live focus feature to be assured that what you are shooting in sharp.
Great Video. I know the functions very well . I was searching for the automatically follow up focus. Means I will activate a focus point and then the cam concentrate on this point by movement. Same like the face recognition but on a point of my choise. But after your explanation I am sure this function doesn`t exist. Anyway..thank you for your video. And nice language. Clear and loud. Very good. Some english or american native speakers are hard to understand ! But dialect is perfect
I find that there is only on solution and that would be to purchase a 16-35mm L lens (or a speedy 35mm lens) use it as you described and you find that you can focus with minimal use of the manual ring or the buttons (as you suggested)...any other lenses I find are under perfoming (or are to heavy and or need steady cams etc.) so then I suggest to take the plunge and purchase a high end movie camera ...never the less your clip was very helpful and informative...
Wow, had this camera a year and never used it for video because I just assume use my video camera (which I then had to lug around), because there was no "auto focus". This isn't perfect in that I still have to hit the button, but it's better than me manually focusing! Also, after just reading the above, now I have to look into how to change the DOF as well, so there's less need to readjust every time my subject moves 2 inches (I'm typically using a 28mm f/1.8 lens).
Thank you for this great tip! I'm considering to buy this camera instead of my Nikon D80. If you pushing that AF button all the time, can you follow running kid, for example? Will he stay in focus? Thanks!
I found the shaky camera work difficult to actually see what you were doing and didn't think you explained what you were doing very clearly. Thanks for the effort you put into it though.
Hi, I don't know if it's possible, but can a "no focus" lens be developed for this camera? I had some binoculars that were "no focus" and they made every object sharp and focused with doing nothing. I took my 5d II to Disneyland and sometimes too many things are going on to try and stay focused and see what's going on. You seem to know enough to help answer my question. Thanks, Johnny
Jackie, the image quality of the 5D MkII, when it's in focus, is vastly better than the XH-G1. I just shot a wedding with both, and cutting between the two makes the difference painfully obvious. The MkII will produce imagery suitable for a Hollywood movie. Of course, you've got to get it in focus, and that leads to lots of forced cuts. I feel you must have at least two cameras if you are shooting something you can't retake.
There is something I can't understand yet. If you are focusing a subject using lens maximum aperture, it will be easier to achive such focus point. What would happen when you are selecting a minimum F stop, such as F22? . It is going to be harder to achieve such focus point.
Ok, but can you do the auto focus automaticly? Like a regular videocamera? Can you just press the Af button once, and let it auto-focus all the time, of your movie, without having to press the AF button all the time?
Does anyone know how to get rid of the annoying AF white square in the middle of the live view while u shoot video? its SO annoying! If you choose the "Live mode" with the smiley face- then there is no rectangle..BUT as soon as you film a person- it appears and locks on it and its annoying! Any ideas?
Every comment here is years old, so I don't know if I'll get an answer. Just to be clear, does the 5D Mk II autofocus continually while shooting a movie? My $300 point and shoot can do that...
EV Owner, the 5DII will NOT autofocus continuously. This video shows how to pre-focus automatically, but if your subject moves or you need to refocus it will be manual.
@@RunEthernet Thanks - I've been doing more research on the Mk II and I believe you're correct. I would have to get the newer Mk IV, I think, to get continual autofocus.
hi! I will have to do videos to people moving fast, so I need that the autofocus is working perfect similar than action camera like sony fdr 3000 BUT very good quality 4k that the small sony hasn't ....what camera do you suggest? Even compact cameras would be good for me! I think to buy a gimbal so I won't have problems with vibrations! thanks
why would you wanna auto focus while recording in video mode??you can always set your focus before hitting the record botton..but for pro videographer manual focus is way to go
What lens should i get, if i want it to focus automatically? cause i always forgot to push the focus button.. i have EF 16-35 2.8 L II usm, and i would like same or almost same wide lens.
This is lame. I see no autofocus here at all. Just pre focusing. Autofocus means it would focus while you are shooting without you having do so anything. It's not autofocus if you have to press a button.
EXACTLY! I just bought this model recently, I received it today, and that is the worst and really, only problem I have with it, I'm thinking that there has to be a way to do what you described, with this camera, maybe a certain lens and function setting combination, it almost seems like a design flaw that you couldn't truly automatically focus, it seems like it has the possibility
Thanks! I recently upgraded from a t1i to a 5Dmk2, and I was boggled that the t1i could auto-focus with the AF-ON button, but my 5Dmk2 did not, after I watched your video I realized that I had the setting for "Quick" instead of 'Live", changed it and voila! thanks man!

10 years scared sounds ridiculous- practice and get better. Fear is crap
Thank you! I've been shooting videos with my mark ii for 18 months and had no idea about this awesome feature! thanks so much!

OMG.. I've been doing it manually all this time!! THank you!!
Thanks a mil for the short and to the point info, much appreciated!!
so clearly delivered. please keep posting videos! Subscribed.

The Quality of this video is ironic.
Very good tip. Had the camera for years and always wanted that to happen. Good voice too.
Thanks for video. Picked up a used 5D MK II and was playing around. Now I know how to autofocus. Cheers.
Thank you so much... I can't believe it took me this long to realize this. I'm so excited to shoot some more video now :)
Thanks man I really need that info, feel quiet a noob but never the less happy to be less noobish
Wow!! You saved me from tons of frustation! Thank you sooooooooooo much!!!
great thank you, finally worked it out!

Good clear explanation of the options - thanks.
Really useful info... Many thanks!
very helpful!! thanks!
Very good tip!!! Thanks.
Brilliant! Thank you thank you, what a cool bit of information....
Terry
Thanks for making this video. Yeah, it's not the perfect solution but I know it'll help me (try manual focusing when you wear progressive tri-focals!)
@Bheardphotography
The little button above and left of the screen. Looks like a camera with the screen.

Thanks a lot for clear demo and explanation!!! Just looked up for this and immediately found your video. Really well done, and thnx to google aswell;)
saved my video in last minute to go out to film a wedding.. lol thanks a lot
Shit man, I knew 5DM2 models don't have auto focus in video mode. Apparently there was. Thank you so much .
Thank you for this great tip!
I'm considering to buy this camera instead of my Nikon D80.
If you pushing that AF button all the time, can you follow running kid, for example? Will he stay in focus? Thanks!
unfortunately, I don't think so, it's not that quick
Awesome. Thank you. Quick and to the point. Appreciate it.
I found the shaky camera work difficult to actually see what you were doing and didn't think you explained what you were doing very clearly. Thanks for the effort you put into it though.
Thanks i was looking for more than 1 mouth in youtube for this one.
Good explanation! THanks, now it is clear to me as well.
Extremely helpful. Thank you!

Thank you so much for this video in 2024 !!! 3 days till 2025.
If someone expected to be using auto-focus whilst filming on a 5d mk ii, then that person should not have bought a 5d mk ii. It's as simple as that.
great presentation
everything`s correct.
but it actually DOES autofocus while shooting video if you`ve chosen the "face recognition" mode
Like 70d?
@@alexcornofficial sorry, I never had one, so it`s hard to tell : )

Canon, thank you for making the 70D. Better AF for every new SLR.
Thank you Adam.
Very informative video :) Thank you!
Super helpful. Thank you!
with Mark III, it works also with the other 2 modes (quick mode and the other live mode)
thanks! how do you change it back to manual focus? when I use the focus ring nothing happens.
super helpful! thank you
Is the better vidoe they the Canon XH A1S and XH G1s ?
Ok, so I need to look for other, not prebuilded way, to get folowing autofocus. Thanks!
Thanks for the video!
I hate the fact that you can’t hold the shutter (half down) to focus whilst on live view
Ok, but can you do the auto focus automaticly? Like a regular videocamera? Can you just press the Af button once, and let it auto-focus all the time, of your movie, without having to press the AF button all the time?
Nope the MKII can only focus on button press..
I don't see a Live View mode on my MKII, do i need to update the firmware?
so is the lens still set for manual when you do this?
+Rotter Tube Reef it is set to auto focus, not manual for this feature to work
awesome thanks!
Thanks
You saved me some time. Thanks.
How did you set the 9 slicing?
Howard Kim the grid is under settings -> Live View/Movie Func. Set. -> Grid Display
Great info. Thank you.
Live View mode is under the tabe with a wrench with two dots
yes
great tip! didnt know, thanks
Found this interesting...I have the 5D3....and the 70D as well...I mainly do stills, but thisis great should i film video....Thanks....Philip
does the mark iii also focus auto.?
thanks mate i knew it had an autofocus option
HELLOwhy on my camera have no green stars option?
thanks
Does it work for the canon 5d m3?

@jackie20ization for is if ender but noly to for detail.
You can’t use af while filming the noise ruins the video, manual works fine!
@derekpeters04 ps. please make lots of videos. i hate all the videos that require ridiculous contraptions.
Lucky bastard!
its dam right close to it. is sure is not manual
