Thanks for the live chat! Another point about Robert’s choice of weapon and what it says about him: a Warhammer is amongst the best tools when trying to defeat someone in full plate armour. Robert had an eye for taking on other nobles (with all their training) and not just slashing his way through the common soldiery. He was always looking for an equal and legendary fight.
I’m pretty sure that Martin included it as a nod to Edward IV who was said to have used the poleaxe as his weapon of choice during the Wars of the Roses.
Another wonderful discussion. What emerges strongly is that Robert was in love with the idea of Lyanna, rather than the reality of the girl. It’s easy to worship an idea, especially a dead one. If they had married, I doubt they would have fared any better than Robert and Cersei. For all her faults, Cersei had a strong sense of duty, drummed into her by Tywin, and tolerated Robert’s behaviour as the trade-off for the ultimate prize - being Queen. My feeling is that Lyanna would have kicked against it. We all know relationships like this...no compromise.
Yeah, Cersei was sexually attracted to her groom and tried to make the marriage work, but he said Lyanna's name while having sex with her and Cersei rightfully couldn't go past that.

I don't believe Varys is honestly trying to help the realm. If he wanted to do that, he could have simply helped Rhaegar ascend. Instead, he may have been the one to tell Brandon. And what if if was Varys who invented the tale of a kidnapping? He's a Blackfyre loyalist, that's all. He sows chaos to make room for Faegon, who is really a Blackfyre.
The Tourney of Harrenhall always reminded me of the corresponding tourney in Ivahoe, including the coat of arms of the protagonist, and the plotting to overthrow the king... "As far as could be judged of a man sheathed in armour, the new adventurer did not greatly exceed the middle size, and seemed to be rather slender than strongly made. His suit of armour was formed of steel, richly inlaid with gold, and the device on his shield was a young oak-tree pulled up by the roots, with the Spanish word Desdichado, signifying Disinherited. He was mounted on a gallant black horse, and as he passed through the lists he gracefully saluted the Prince and the ladies by lowering his lance. The dexterity with which he managed his steed, and something of youthful grace which he displayed in his manner, won him the favour of the multitude,"
Did it never dawn of Rhaegar that the prophecy wasn't about "the father of the prince that was promised"? He was so blinded that he forgot that once the third child was conceived, he was no longer needed.
It originally started as he thought of himself as such. Once he thought it was his children, why wouldn’t he guide them or protect them until he no longer can? If you have children, this is no question.
Speaking of Littlefinger's Grain storage, it makes me think of the story of Joseph in Genesis where Pharaoh has a dream that none of his advisors can interpret until Joseph is brought out of the prison. The dream itself was meant to show that there was going to be 7 years of plenty followed by 7 years of famine, and Joseph advised Pharaoh to build grain bins to have enough for the long drought. All the details about Robert's Rebellion with the fathers coming to save their sons, and I can't help but think that Tyrion will end up going back into the Vale despite warnings that if he steps foot into the Vale itself he is going to be killed. Now, how does he juggle getting to Daenerys with the possibility of getting himself, Penny, and Jorah into the Vale let alone Westeros? There might be a clue in Tyrion meeting with Ser Barristan before Daenerys comes back from Vaes Dothrak as possibly what the books can do that the show could not.
This was a great deep dive into Robert's Rebellion , super interesting conflict the result and fallout of which certainly very pertinent to the current narrative. I especially like GRRM's delivery with the info and reveals with the Rebellion as we gradually get more and more until we have a considerable amount of knowledge. So many interesting elements to be discussed with the particulars and the exact event where there was no turning back is up for debate, be it R+L running off , Brandon going down to KL to confront Rhaegar for answers , the Stark executions and then Aerys II asking for the heads of Ned and Robert Baratheon etc. For me either way the realm was a powder keg ready to blow given the Mad King's descent into madness with accompanied atrocities , especially once many of the lords of the realm got a full glimpse of Aerys II (his appearance and behavior) at the Tourney of Harrenhal. Either way this was going to happen imo , some sort of rebellion / usurpation attempts , R+L and the Stark executions were the catalyst they were looking for but if that did not occur something else would have been eventually used as justification ; Aerys II own eldest child Rhaegar was very much interested in ousting him. That is sort of the even bigger tragedy of events that in reality Robert and Ned's side were very much in line and had the same goal as Rhaegar , being rid of Aerys II ; but especially from Bobby B's unrelenting rage , Varys' thwarting of conspiring opportunities and eventually R+L 's actions all came together as part of why the factions failed to come together and realize their common goal. Either way, rebellion was brewing ; R+L along with the executions of Brandon and Rickard were the rationalizations for a call to action ; of which if none of that happened some other justification would have eventually been used to get the ball rolling. Per an eventual adaptation , I tend to agree with GRRM , not sure there is an excessive amount left to reveal and learn from an adaption of RR ; GRRM does not see the point or merit in an adaptation of RR. But I would still enjoy if GRRM changed his mind and sanctioned such a project , although there is quite a bit more of other writing endeavors in this universe that need to be advanced and completed as priorities.
Comment continued *** Per the discussion in the live chat , I definitely do not think Robert B genuinely loved Lyanna at all , nor that it would have changed him or his behavior having been with her. RB hardly knew LS beyond some idealized image , and given who she was with her commendable will and independent spirit that match would have been an utter disaster imo , as she would have surely been even less tolerable and forgiving of Robert's behavior than Cersei or most other potential matches I can even imagine. It would have been miserable for Lyanna especially , which along with whatever love and affinity she and Rhaegar developed for each other definitely would have had her even more willing to run off to avoid that match with RB. Also per Varys in the chat , initially i do think he was feeling the environment out , pushing limits , figuring out how the cogs and gears of power work and testing his spying and whispering capabllities. But eventually it seems his actions were more to keep the realm in chaos , otherwise why would he try to help keep an insane Aerys II with an atrocity laden latter reign , in power. Especially when Rhaegar who seems a massively better alternative was there or at least not try and obstruct the rebellion and/or Rhaegar's chances in general per informing Aerys II of the Harrenhal potential gathering of the lords to conspire (and hence why Aerys II went) or advising Aerys not to open the gates to Tywin (though V was not listened to in that instance). For me eventually it becomes clear he wanted to keep the realm not thriving and often to the point of chaos at times to leave Westeros open to the king Varys wanted to install. With V imo being a Blackfyre sympathizer if not directly or partially a Blackfyre himself , V's desired ruler looks to be fAegon who i believe is also a Blackfyre who is being pushed as a Targ despite being a pretender (though it is unlikely fAegon himself even knows the truth of the matter). Especially later on setting the conditions to help facilitate fAegon's ascension is basically the only explanation for a lot of Varys' behavior.

So when did the winter end? If it came back in force after the Tourney at Harrenhal, when did it ease up for all these people and armies to be moving around? I'm also trying to figure out how Howland's and Ashara's relationship progressed during a war with their houses on opposite sides. He had maybe a few months before everything broke down, but you'd think a Crannegman visiting Dorne (or vice-versa) would have been noticed. Presumably, he had to go to Winterfell with his men when Ned called his banners. Meera probably wasn't conceived at Harrenhal because her age puts her birth closer to Robb's and Jon's. She'd likely be nearly a year older if conceived at the Tourney.

In fact, Martin doesn't seem to emphasize the negatives of incest as strongly as earlier stories and real life. Targaeryan incest seems more to have limited their ability to shore up alliances with the noble families rather than causing direct tragedy the way it does in a story like Oedipus.
One could argue the rebellion was scheduled anyway. Rhaegar eloping with Lyanna and Littlefinger allegedly spreding a rumour about it, could have offered an excuse but not reason for the real leader of the rebellion to Take action.
I am not sure about Varys - I do agree that he was mostly showing off his skill as a spymaster, and there wasn't Young Griff yet. On the other hand, if him and Elirio were already plotting long-term conspiracy for the Blackfyre takeover, and just waiting for the appropriate pretender to be found, proving his bona fides to Aerys was essential to this plan, and stoking paranoia in general is important for keeping a spymaster close to decision making level. And if Varys knew his job, he would be sure that Rhaegar would not stop his attempts to "make changes", so the opportunity for advancing Varys' plans would present itself sooner or later, and he will need to be position to take advantage of this development. Needless to say, that personally I do not believe in good will of spymasters, especially those who claim to do things "for the realm" :)
Prime Bobby B would have beat Aurther Dayne i think. If Robert was a swordsman then id go with Aurther and even Barriston. But his warhammer would be the difference maker. It would smash through any sword block.
It’s tough because it’s gotta be a slow swing so it’s gives a master swordsman time to dodge I would think. It also leaves Robert really vulnerable for a quick counter attack. If warhammers were the best, everyone would use one over a sword. I think it comes down to the fighter. I give the nudge to Arthur Dayne. Just my thoughts!
@@Zach-sx8cm i didnt mean war hammers were the best, Ned Stark could barelt lift Robert War Hammer. It was only advantageous for somebody huge, strong, and fast like Prime Bobby B, who was 6'6" and all muscle, like Hulk Hogan. Only a few guys in Westeros history were suited for it. The Mountain, The Hound, Sandoq the Shadow, The Greatjon, Maegor, and maybe Cregan.
I kind of think that anti-Targaryan rebellion was inevitable ever after Aegon V showed that he was willing to infringe on the rights of the lords - he saw as for the interests of the smallfolk, the lords viewed it as trespassing on their privilege. Summerhall showed that the Targaryans would not stop at any means, and Aerys becoming unhinged was another warning sign. I do view the Southorn Ambition conspiracy, Rhaegar's planned coup as the indication that the stability of the dynasty was rapidly disintegrating. Of course, I grew up on "Hard to be f God" (it does exist in English translation), where the results of similar disintegration were described, so I could be not entirely objective in my reading.
Yes i believe Judith is correct , he tends to stick with books / stories that are now in the public domain or ones that cost a reasonable fee to use in such a way. ASoIaF is not in either category , and likely will not be for I assume decades if not ever , especially if there is an estate set up as I suspect there likely will be with ASoIaF which will have to sign off or be hugely compensated for such activities.
He can’t because of the copyright issues the other commenters have mentioned. The audiobooks of ASOIF are excellent, narrated by the wonderful Roy Dotrice (who passed away a couple of years’ ago). His repertoire of accents is something to behold...
Ned vs Jamie would go Ned every time, Ned was out of his prime when he fought Jamie in kings landing and he still would have won if no one else interfered
As far as allegiance to the king or to the lord is concerned, historically (in our Universe) in depends on what kind of monarchy it was: in a feudal monarchy the allegiance to the lord was stronger, in an absolute monarchy allegiance to the king becomes more important. The ASOIF, in my opinion, describes mostly the feudal type of monarchy (with the exception of existence of Citadel)
I do not think that Sansa is on the level with Mia, she is consistently treating her like help, both in The Feast for Crows and in the sample chapter, their cultural background is too different, even if Sansa is pretending to be Baelish's bastard, she did go through septa delivered "noble" education, whereas Mia was tending the mules..

“I killed him only once” complains Robert, the same guy who thinks it might be a good idea to send Daenerys Targaryen, as a wedding gift, a knife and a brave man to wild it. Mance, a major Father figure for Jon, and kind of a poor’s man Rhaegar, is climbing his pyre before our own very eyes, just to find him, some chapters later, doing quite well, despite his alleged immolation. Berric, Catelyn, Jon, are all proof death is not necessary one’s end. Jamie dreams of Rhaegar garbed in The Other’s armour. In Fire and Blood we have the prophecy of that new King who will rise when the hammer will fall upon the dragon. And none (No One?) shall stand before him. What other clues we need to come to terms with out boy Rhaegar coming back?
Robert barathon is probably the greatest warrior westeros has ever had..greater than Arthur Dayne.. reason why? His weapon of choice. Dayne was the greatest SWORDSMAN, a war hammer is not a SWORD..armor is more effective against a slash or stab than it is against blunt force trauma of a war hammer, let alone Robert and HIS hammer

I waiting for you to read the ASOIAF books on that channel.
I dont know if he can i think he can only read stories that are older or the author/their estate has released them from copyright claims or whatever
His repertoire of accents is something to behold...
dragon binder might be binding people to "dragons".... valyrians.
Hi.Are you related to Baelish by any chance?
Brandon: give me one reason why I shouldn’t kill you now...
Little finger: so you know that thing with Rhaegar and your sister and Harrenhal... ?
Love
IDG!!!
Is Tyrion a Targaryen?
Ned vs Jamie would go Ned every time, Ned was out of his prime when he fought Jamie in kings landing and he still would have won if no one else interfered
Shouldn't it be Garlan Tyrell as the best fighter in Westeros???
Christmas and NYE livestreams would be great!
He woulda hid her with the crannog men
Why are you getting so buff?
ROBERT THE SKULL CRUSHER, GIVE HIM THE FIRST SEASON TO CHOP L INTO MICRO PEICES
I fell asleep! How embarrassing! Last thing I remember is Chrissy saying goodnight and then I woke up, head on keyboard and the stream was long over! I must have missed about 20 minutes at the end.
ST Y REAM😂 CHARITY IS CLOSED
I dont know any champion or winner that thinks they have a chance of losing so why would Rhaegar, terrible point
Were you dropped on your head or something? Terrible point.
@@maxloeks3880 obviously you were or just born a loser, no winner expects to lose or have a thought of losing
Why does alot of fans want dany and jon together? This relationship is very wierd. Am i wrong to believe that all of you would start relations with your siblings children???
C'Mon Man!!!
The bouncy door causally twist because break occasionally strap outside a protective close. nimble, abhorrent thursday
I feel like your "I have merch but forgot to bring it because I'm bad at selling merch" routine is the new selling point. Reverse psychology marketing. 😜😜😜
