I was recently looking at living out an old dream of owning an L322. However insurance was going to be £1000+, road tax £700, big fuel bills and untold maintenance costs I decided to leave the idea as a dream in my head, rather than a nightmare on my driveway.
Clearly you've never owned a car equipped with it. Keyless entry along with start may seem small but it's extremely convenient and makes the experience that much more smooth
Insurance is sometimes baffling. On my renewal, I phoned the broker to take my ex wife off as a named driver, he said it would go up in price, and it did, £40 if I remember. So I kept her on the policy and she's still on there now 8 years later.
If the vehicle manufacturers, by law, had to insure their products against theft, I'm sure they would come up with some serious deterrants, to fox the evil-doers!
Store the keys/fobs in a faraday box or pouch, stops their signal pick up, also a system i think called Ghost where you programme the immobiliser unlock to whatever you chose, i.e, you have to input left indicator/hazard light/radio on etc, so only you know which button/levers to press to start the vehicle.
This gets even better. You get a special program installed on your RR which makes you perform a series of arbitrary actions each time you want to start it up so it doesn’t get stolen. All because it has keyless entry, which was supposed to remove the daunting task of, wait for it, pressing a button - whooo. Then, you have to remember where your key is because there’s no special holder for it - otherwise known as an “ignition”. Jesus christ well done humanity.
Curiously, drug dealers use a similar idea to protect the stash in their vehicles. Switches and controls in a certain position before the hiding place can be opened.@@bapoo
I picked up a couple of those for my A4 Allroad keys. I like the keyless entry function but there’s always a scrot’ out there wanting to ruin your day.
@mgsalmon79 for sure. I've been using Faraday bags forever for every car not just keyless entry because they can duplicate keys from the signal too. They stole thousands of BMWs like that
On a completely different and yet similar issue -I’ve been quoted £1200 to insure my 13 year old Whippet for £4000 of cover. He cost me £350 albeit 13 years ago
I was on the verge of buying a RR Sport 300D 2021 year when I checked my insurance. I live 15 miles out of Manchester and am late 50's with full no claims etc etc. My current insurers would not insure me (though happy to take £550 per yr for my BMW640D) and going to the market got me a quote of £3920.00!! I changed my address to one near the border with Scotland and lo and behold got a quote for £1300.00. Still expensive but somewhat better than nearly £4K. Either way, I will be sticking with my 640D for the time being. Great video👍
Once a JLR product is stolen I would assume it’s worth more in parts than trying to sell the car on. It would be very difficult to trace all the individual parts after breaking up the vehicle.
Everyone claims there unreliable but that’s usually by someone who’s not owned one, im onto my 5th now and there amazing cars if you buys dog then it’s always gunna be a dog, how ever cost to own one is extortion atm
Don’t need to spend 10million, just turn OFF keyless entry. Simple. Insurance companies need to specify keyless entry is off for it to effect insurance. But if you don’t want it stolen just turn that off.
I’ve just renewed my trade insurance.. I’m a very small business, just started this year from home.. My renewal after 1 claim free year is almost double last year’s price?! My policy only covers me to drive & up to just 10 cars. Any other traders noticed similar?
60 years old ,20 years no claims living in rural part of wiltshire ,2010 discovery in August £650, 2 weeks ago got another quote same company £1800 with 900 excess and warned it may double next year. Same company 2018 shogun £495
I own an RR Velar 2019 HSE. It was a shade over £400 pa to insure when I bought the car in 2021. Last year that went up to £850 which was eye watering enough. I’ve just done a quote for curiosity’s sake. £1600 was the absolute cheapest. We live in north Shropshire and it’s had the security upgrade. It’s really not worth keeping hold of the car when annual running costs are £2k plus before I even put fuel in. It’s even more infuriating to see the value of the car has dropped by almost £8k in as many months (it’s done just over 28k miles). JLR really need to get a handle on the situation as their vehicles are becoming unviable for so many people.
I have just turned 70, with no issues or points etc, living in Enfield in London.I own a ford grand c max to ferry the grand kids around, with my wife as named driver. The AA insurance co wanted £2800 to insure it !!!! £35 road tax, 60 miles to the gallon on a run. Explain why..... Churchill eventually got my custom with a quote for £700...rediculous
Here in the USA, certain Hyundai and Kia model vehicles have seen skyrocketing insurance premiums due a weak point in the ignition system that can allow hacking so can be very easily stolen. So far putting on a steering wheel bar lock has been the most immediate response of Hyundai/Kia until a better fix can be done. Most of the thefts have been by 'joyriders'. Other brands like Land Rover and other 'luxury' brands, SUV's, are being stolen more for export, especially in areas where near ports. I bet a lot of LR's in the UK being stolen are illegally shipped to Africa and Asia countries with dodgy laws as to past ownership or easy bribery. Even beyond certain model and brand issues, car insurance premiums are skyrocketing in much of the USA (and likely in the UK) due to a number of factors. Larger numbers of persons operating without insurance or have low levels of liability insurance (so a need for higher premiums for uninsured/under-insured coverage). Much higher replacement/repair parts and labor rates. Long supply parts delays so higher temp vehicle rentals costs. Non-payment of loans. Higher rates of vandalism in certain cities.
My London based daughter has just got her renewal premium for a RRSport, quoted at £28,440 for business comprehensive. She has 19 years NCB, with 2 recent no fault claims (the second being theft but retrieved from a local car park by the Met). She has 6 points on her licence currently, for 2 motorway speeding fines. The car is now off the road, in favour of a company car.
JOE i sold a c63 last year. It had keyless entry and keyless start. It came back for some warranty issue two month later and the guy had removed it and fitted a proper key ignition. Good idea
your golf quote is very good, I am paying a lot more, for a lower insurance group car, older and long no claims history. only difference is work use is on the cover.
same here. I'm driving a shed of a corsa c. I'm paying over £400 a year. Never had a claim against me(34 years of driving). I don't live in a city, But i use it for work. Maybe i should buy a 911
Do car makers really think the public are to lazy to put a key in the ignition to start a car????? Personally, I'd rather have a key and a ignition barrel.
Some valid points here and as a Disco 4 owner I am very concerned with these stories. However, I'm not surprised that your choice of an E1 postcode on the edge of Bishopgate in the City of London (financial district) got such poor results. It's hardly a typical address for the majority of us.
Circa £200 for a Porsche and here I am considering myself lucky to get my 2013 Kia pro ceed insured for less than £500, I’m 47 with 7 years no claims no points etc😂 Great video Joe👍
Its not just the theft of JLR products thats the issue, its the cost of repairing them is astronomical. A friend of mine is an assesor for DLG, he said they just dont want to touch JLR stuff as its so expensive and the electrical systems on them so finicky.
Would have been a fairer comparison to use a golf of exactly the same value? Insurance has gone bonkers in the last year alone so I would expect that 911 quote from 2021 to be double now. This is what happens when you lock down furlough people for over a year and print a shit ton of money. Inflation goes wild.
My A Class which I’ve owned from new was £500 in 2021 when I had 5 years driving and 4 years NCD, then last year it went up to £550, now it’s £658 and I stuck with the same provider as the rest of the market was around the same or more. Not sure why it jumped up so much. I have more NCD, same address, haven’t changed any habits… Strange. Always wanted a LR, got quotes to see if I bought one how much it would be… For a LR Velar or Sport… Cheapest quote was £3500. Crazy
I live in London SW19, a Range Rover theft hotspot, I was quite apprehensive about getting quotes for a new Range Rover, however, the lowest quote was £1350 ish, which I thought was a bargain considering on a 2021 Range Rover Sport I just sold the lowest quote was over £3000!
I had to cancel my order for a 2024 Range Rover Vogue SE as I could not get it insured. Even Land Rover declined to insure!! I live in North Yorkshire. Bought a new Audi Q7 Vorsprung, no problems with insurance.
It would cost about 300 per car assuming it has 2 keys issued at new to make it almost bulletproof security wise from new with electronics and hardware. According to a friend who worked for A certain supplier of anti tank mines to the MOD . They were keyless activated and had anti-spoof software for obvious reasons
My insurance quote went up £400+ changing the date I wanted it to start by a few days. Still in the same month. Cannot work insurance companys out. Nightmare
Interesting. Got a mate in Portishead with an 18 plate RR sport and a brand new one on order. Will get him to check if his current one has had that fix

Joe you can't really count the insurance prices from 2 years ago, most insurance prices have gone up this year. I had a claim on my traders policy in August for £7000,, my policy has gone up from £1800 to £5500 on renewal in October
An insurance company should buy the market stock up; disable keyless entry/start, fit ghost like tracker then sell on market at a profit with insurance once the prices have stabilised/increase.
I have trade insurance , did the same as you today, im in Devon and my current range rover had 4 quotes for £850 and an alfa giulia i have was £600 , im 51 and 3 years no claims, didnt think that was bad
I paid £2,199 for a 2011 L322 TDV8 last month (October 2023), tax was an extra £695. If the insurance does not go down significantly next year, I will be waving bye to the L322
I'm 50 with over 10 years no clsims ..I just got quoted £1008 for comprehensive insurance on a 13 year old range rover sport with a tracker...ridiculous..😳
The annoying thing, is if you have fitted a tracker & ghost immobiliser,,,,, there is still no reduction in the insurance price, & that just cannot be fair? they just do not want to take extra security fittings in the quote!!!!!!
For a manuel gear-change driver to change to an automatic vehicle, the premium will be much higher. The reason being is that it is so easy to stamp on the big brake pedal, thinking it is the clutch, in an emergency, next, you have hit the loud pedal thinking it's the brake. Whatever, they still charge more, especially if you have many miles on your own clock!
@@rezamotin7305 Thank you Sir, I agree, but it happened to me on two occasions. A woman with 2 kids stepped out and I hit the brake and loud pedal. Then on another occasion, a van stopped suddenly with no brake lights and I did the same . I didn't hit anyone, but realized the auto geared car was not for me, as an 88 year old ex-truck driver I should have said no when it was offered to me, but I was stuck for transport at the time.......jr
Yes you are right, but I failed to explain, that happened years ago. I quit driving when I developed an inherited physical problem. Can't even walk, let alone drive.!
It’s not only relay theft it’s also using Bluetooth to access components that talk to each other which was preferred to reduce the cost and weight of the wiring harness. For relay just turn off keyless entry. Why wouldn’t you?
Anther great video, do you know what year Land Rover started using key less entry on their vehicles, and are they offering this upgrade to all of theses vehicles?
All keyless entry vehicles are vulnerable to relay attack. The only reason you only hear about Range Rovers is the Media love to bash Range Rover. At one point the most stolen car in London was the C Class Mercedes. But nobody talked about that. I know more people who have had a Mercedes stole than any JLR product
Just trying to get hold of my JLR security recall - obviously they rolled it out for the most popular post 2018 model. Spoke to HQ today. I have a 2020 5.0sc autobiography and am basically last on the list.
I guess the JLR solution will need to assessed by a body like Thatcham to satisfy the insurance companies? Wonder how long that will take. A high stakes game, this.
Mate.... I got a BMW 320d 2019 plate Been driving 16 years 12 years no claims No accident or points Live in Stoke on trent Best quote.... How much do you think ?
lol 16K for a range rover here just outside london , the range rover is £18k now and come down hell of a lot , but nobody is touching them , do you fancy selling a vw golf r estate 7.5 on a 67 plate it has everything and 999 score lol.😁
Amazing that 90 owners per day that DON'T understand a Faraday key pouch.... Sad reflection that people are making such a lack of effort in protecting your own property.
I spent a lifetime working in insurance and its simple. You have lice assurance...... you are assured of dying so the parameters are fixed and premiums can be set accordingly. You INSURE against something that may or may not happen and the premium is adjusted based on risk. Buy a house on River View Street thats fine but when it floods twice in 3 years the view of the flood threat is reviewed based on risk. Sadly in my working life I have met people who have been flooded 4 times in ten years and have a £40k excess on flood perils or can't get cover at all. Seems harsh but bear in mind if an insurer is paying £50- £60k every few years is not sustainable. All the folks who live at the top of the hill 10 miles away from a watercourse.... why should they face a premium increase because of flood repairs when they are not in danger of flooding? So JLR released products that were secure a few years ago and now the thieves find a way around it. So the risk increases. I saw a video of someone doing this type of theft on a £305k Roller the other day. Fact is they pay more for insurance or you face increases on your costs - its a market.
All insurances have gone through the roof caused by idiots on the road and greedy car body repair companies. I had experience with my repair costing £1900 for very light damage the car was only worth £1600 taking into account the recent valuation drop. The world has gone mad 😠
Who would buy a JLR car ? They are totally unreliable, they get nicked within seconds of owning them and they can’t be fixed when they go wrong because JLR are upgrading their spares distribution to net zero ??? And the result is a six month wait for spares !
I have a '92 Defender with a 480bhp LS3, renewal this year was £114.97 through Adrian Flux which was a nice surprise. My daily L322 was £450 a couple months ago. I live in Devon in an area thats generally not on fire.
This is the latest in a long line of cars that become nickable. In the 60's it was MK2 Jags for bank jobs, then hot hatches in the 80's became uninsurable, cosworths in the 90's etc etc. These range rovers are just the latest and once they get bored of these then it will be another brand that gets nicked. The thieves are always one step ahead. I'm glad I got my RR fix in the 90's with a classic RR 3.9 Vouge SE. I had my Campervan targeted 3 times last year and was then only insurable with a tracker so that got sold before the theives tried a fourth time.

What year was the vehicle?
I have just got one on 58 plate 3 years no claims £445 fully comp. Shop around and go for it, your only here once

I have trade insurance , did the same as you today, im in Devon and my current range rover had 4 quotes for £850 and an alfa giulia i have was £600 , im 51 and 3 years no claims, didnt think that was bad
Is this applicable for Jaguars as well?
I paid £2,199 for a 2011 L322 TDV8 last month (October 2023), tax was an extra £695. If the insurance does not go down significantly next year, I will be waving bye to the L322
I'm 50 with over 10 years no clsims ..I just got quoted £1008 for comprehensive insurance on a 13 year old range rover sport with a tracker...ridiculous..😳
VW use a system where the key stops transmitting a signal once the key is still for a few minutes. Do JLR not do that as it’s a simple solution?
The annoying thing, is if you have fitted a tracker & ghost immobiliser,,,,, there is still no reduction in the insurance price, & that just cannot be fair? they just do not want to take extra security fittings in the quote!!!!!!
Take it up with Ghost, they haven’t got their product certified with Thatcham which insurance companies recognise.
This sounds like a +1 story in the pub
@@rezamotin7305 Thank you Sir, I agree, but it happened to me on two occasions. A woman with 2 kids stepped out and I hit the brake and loud pedal. Then on another occasion, a van stopped suddenly with no brake lights and I did the same .
I didn't hit anyone, but realized the auto geared car was not for me, as an 88 year old ex-truck driver I should have said no when it was offered to me, but I was stuck for transport at the time.......jr
@@johnrideout7124 yeah people your age should absolutely not be driving. It’s like giving a 6 year old a license
Yes you are right, but I failed to explain, that happened years ago. I quit driving when I developed an inherited physical problem. Can't even walk, let alone drive.!
Just got a quote for our 6 year old Evoque. NFU wouldn’t quote. The best quote was £638. Last year it was £259
It’s not only relay theft it’s also using Bluetooth to access components that talk to each other which was preferred to reduce the cost and weight of the wiring harness.
For relay just turn off keyless entry. Why wouldn’t you?
Keys work well :)
67 plate RR identical to that going through auction at around £28k
Going to get less and less know one wants those things. The people stupid enough to previously buy them can't borrow the money anymore.
Insurance on a lexus cost me £700 even though its 10 years old. The reason was it doesn't lose its value. Its lost £4000 this year.
Joe did you work for Prism in Highbridge when u were Repping?
Was just about to buy a Range Rover, I don't live in London and i have 10+ years no claims - the cheapest insurance quote £3600 a year. Ridiculous.
We keep our keys in a metal tin which acts as a Faraday cage so no signal can be read . Simple solution when at home .
Can people have a security number pad fitted??
Just trying to get hold of my JLR security recall - obviously they rolled it out for the most popular post 2018 model. Spoke to HQ today. I have a 2020 5.0sc autobiography and am basically last on the list.
Hi mate who do you speak to to enquire about this? I have a 19plate velar, not sure where id be on this list
Here in America, my security system is an M4 and 2 Dogo Argentino's.
I guess the JLR solution will need to assessed by a body like Thatcham to satisfy the insurance companies? Wonder how long that will take. A high stakes game, this.
Should have compared like for like. Maybe an X5 40d.
As if a golf is a comparison 😮
Im in my 60s now and im paying around 300 for fully comp on my 17 year old car.
Mate.... I got a BMW 320d 2019 plate
Been driving 16 years
12 years no claims
No accident or points
Live in Stoke on trent
Best quote.... How much do you think ?
Just been looking. You can get SVR for £33k now.
I paid around £1k for my 1st car when I was 17yo. It was a metallic turquoise ford fiesta 1.1 on a D reg! 😆
Are you a homosexual??😮
Nice one Joe thanks.
I'm 60 live in Slough, they quoted me £8900 a year
i pay £1700 for my 1994 transit di with hire and reward insurance, ive been driving 40 years with 20 NCB so that range rover for me would be cheap
lol 16K for a range rover here just outside london , the range rover is £18k now and come down hell of a lot , but nobody is touching them , do you fancy selling a vw golf r estate 7.5 on a 67 plate it has everything and 999 score lol.😁
You still trying to flog that? You never stop banging on about it 😂
@@Kingdonnerkebab lol but i cant give it away its too good . lol
That would suggest a possible opportunity to buy in London/sell elsewhere…
My daughter is 30 and still gets mad ins quotes.Shes got a 57 plate astra 1.7 and cheapest she could get was not far off 1k,its mental ins prices.
I've got 20 years of experience no points or claims still paying 1500 its shocking the car is 1.5 toyota yaris
Thanks Captain Obvious
I have never ever thought of insuring my lice , maybe I should look into it 😊
All insurances have gone through the roof caused by idiots on the road and greedy car body repair companies.
I had experience with my repair costing £1900 for very light damage the car was only worth £1600 taking into account the recent valuation drop. The world has gone mad 😠
Insurance is very expensive now for any car now
Is 'third party only' an option, as a last resort? Far from but might let some people keep Land Rover 'products' legal to drive.
Jaguar/Land Rover have just launched their own insurance scheme to allow owners to obtain cover for more reasonable costs.
EASY DO AWAY WITH KEYLESS OR DISABLE IT
Who would buy a JLR car ? They are totally unreliable, they get nicked within seconds of owning them and they can’t be fixed when they go wrong because JLR are upgrading their spares distribution to net zero ??? And the result is a six month wait for spares !
I have a '92 Defender with a 480bhp LS3, renewal this year was £114.97 through Adrian Flux which was a nice surprise. My daily L322 was £450 a couple months ago. I live in Devon in an area thats generally not on fire.
Funny how it’s London and Manchester they don’t want big cars in the cities
This is the latest in a long line of cars that become nickable. In the 60's it was MK2 Jags for bank jobs, then hot hatches in the 80's became uninsurable, cosworths in the 90's etc etc.
These range rovers are just the latest and once they get bored of these then it will be another brand that gets nicked. The thieves are always one step ahead.
I'm glad I got my RR fix in the 90's with a classic RR 3.9 Vouge SE.
I had my Campervan targeted 3 times last year and was then only insurable with a tracker so that got sold before the theives tried a fourth time.
@Lookup2Wakeup Birmingham.
@Lookup2Wakeup there are a few by me that didn't seem to be targeted, guess mine was what they were after? Anyway its someone elses problem now!
Make your cars easy to steal seems like good business
Rust and engine failures seems to be far and wide. … so yes .. keeps em coming
Haltlock is the answer
Perfect content great Chanel Seasons Greetings
Can't happen if you put your key in a metal box.
I don’t suppose it helps them getting on fire and burning down multi-storey car parks either!
You get a year older another years no claims, insurance goes up 😮
@ginger it's a scam similar to the banking industry. They make it up as they go along.
These cars should have been secure before they left the factory. Speaks volumes for the lack of quality control at jlr.
