Great review and agree with most you say. Have the McLaren GT3 and formula Carbon. At the end of the day, you are not looking at your steering wheel but what you are doing in the race and functionality in both is fine unless you are an e-sports driver. The McLaren GT3 is the go to wheel for most of the sims I play, but do slightly prefer the formula wheel for open wheel races. If I had a choice of one or the other, would choose the McLaren GT3 every day of the week and is the one that I use 90% of the time no-matter which format I am racing, excluding rallying or drifting of course. The rubber on the wheel feels fine and the grip indents and feel are amazing.

I somehow managed to buy one from someone closeby for exactly 50 euros :))) best investment ever as the wheel is barely touched and i have everything from the box (stickers, cards and all) Practically brand new . It's weird because i dont feel particularly wow playing with it but i like it . Made my time better for some reason
At 5:05 "if you're worried the McLaren wheel has more flex....." It does. I bought the McLaren GT3 V2. At 7 months old it felt as if the left grip was flexing. Then the grip broke off at the bottom and wheel is unusable. There's a thin plastic protrusion into the grip and this fractured. Sent video and pictures to Fanatec support. At my expense I am to post the wheel back but they reckoned that the wheel had been dropped, which it definitely hasn't. So haven't much faith in how they will proceed with this. Not sure what to do I could end up with the added expense of sending the wheel back and if they decide it's not going to be fixed under warranty it's going to be just over $60 per hour to fix. As well I was using the wheel on a CSL elite for PS4 base so not direct drive.
Fantastic comparison. I upgraded to Fanatec from Logitech on Black Friday. I started with the Rally Wheel as that’s what I mostly drive. I dabble a little in ACC so wanted a square wheel too but thought I’d wait and see what wheels they announced as the Formula V2 seemed a bit rich for me for a category of racing I only dabble in and suck at. Well the day the McLaren V2 was announced, it looked perfect so I immediately ordered. It arrived yesterday and I fired up ACC and gave it a try. I love it! My only slight concern was the lack of thumb wheels. Thanks for putting that concern to rest.
I own the mclaren v1 and the formula Carbon and the size and ergonomics of the Mclaren is just perfect, and prefer the Mclaren over the Formula rim. I wish they made a premium version of the Mclaren rim with better materials and grips, because the only downside is the Mclaren wheel feels a bit plastic. The formula wheel feels way more sturdy.

I own one of the original McLaren V1 wheels bought when Fanatec offered a bundle that included the Clubsport metal QR for a really good price. I have had no problems period out of my V1 wheel over the last couple of years. It has been my daily driver and to me for a combination GT/Formula car wheel set up is awesome. I have ordered a V2 wheel as I do want a spare just in case. I will try the new V2 wheel as it does have some upgrades such as the magnetic shifters and I will transfer my metal QR over to the new wheel just because I have it and I can. I do prefer the formula wheel for a few reasons, but for that price with my budget, the McLaren wheel looks like the nicest wheel in the entire world 😂

I actually switch from the Formula V2 to the McLaren GT3… never looked back. The McLaren is amazing value and holds up. Sure its not carbon fibre.. but its strong with a metal quick release.
GT3 V2 on a DD1 needs the CSQR addon. The standard simplified QR causes issues with the DD1. The V2 has a few ergo issues that killed it for me. The GT3 V2 is brilliant, the size is perfect (V2 is too small for me). I have not taken it off the DD1 since I got it in the first batch. Perfect for ACC.
its not locked by software, its locked by a pastic pin that depresses a button inside the wheel, located on the quick release, grind it off, no limitation, can recommend for 15NM, never used it past that due to being cheaply made
You buy the wheel for the car you’re driving. I’d you drive GT3, you need Mclarin. If you’re doing GP or F1 you want the formula. Being GP and F1 you need the extra knobs and wheels
Great video. Led me to buy the McLaren over the Formula just now. I clicked your affiliate link on my phone then ordered from PC, so I hope you still get the affiliate sale for it. I did click your link again on my PC, but AFTER I already ordered. Either way, thanks much for the solid review.
Oh, also the McLaren v2 wheel has sold out. I'm selling mine. Have decided to go all in and just bought the Formula V2 wheel. Let me know if interested. I'll be selling it for full retail plus shipping, btw.
I would be happy if the wheels get full support on Xbox Series X instead of having assignment issues for the buttons and display & rev lights not working. Do you know when full compatibility with Xbox will be supported?
Xbox only allows for a certain number of buttons to be assigned. Every wheel has this problem even G923’s because the gas, brake, and steering are 3 inputs right there
I have the V2 with APM's. I use the top right paddle for DRS and I can't even remember what the top left paddle is mapped to. The two thumb dials are mapped to brake bias and differential, though I also can't remember which is which because I hardly ever change them in a race. The V2 is kind of overkill for my style of driving, and even though it's nice to know all those dials and switches are there if I need them, I may have been better off going with a Formula Esports or Formula Carbon rim and spent the extra cash on the Club Sport pedals. Also, does anyone else have issues with the Fanatec button caps snapping in half or just falling off? I have had half the caps snap in half, while the other half just don't want to stay on anymore. Did I just get a faulty batch?
I'd go with the McLaren for my GT DD Pro 8nm. I have a QR1 (that I picked up second hand for €60) on my Gran Turismo wheel. So I'd just swap it out with the McLaren. The problem is Fanatec's delivery cost are excessive. €42.90 to deliver the McLaren to Ireland. Ridiculous. The delivery of my GT DD Pro plus boost kit was only €30. It doesn't make sense.
“As you lose hold of yourself and slide deeper into the sim racing ether” 😂😂 I was literally thinking get the formula and upgrade the paddles eventually and then you said that!
I have both... my Formula V2 has the advanced paddle module..... The Mclaren rim hasn't come off my rig since I got it and made the decision between the 2
Already have one preordered and shipping in the next days - watching this video gets me so excited as i've been using a standard fanatec wheel for formula racing. Thanks! The only thing that still bothers me as an xbox user is the limited button configuration options - anyone else bothered by this?
@@nickhitchcock3277 good to know, its insane microsoft are doing nothing about it - PlayStation have 28 custom buttons 😅 The wheel itself though - its epic
Remarkable right? Fanatec had it, clear as day. If they had made a 'Replica' BMW GT3 wheel alongside that.. needlessly 'cool' real GT3 wheel they sell. They'd have sold bucket loads of them. Not to mention, due to their relationship with GT3 in general, I don't understand why they wont further their catalogue of replica GT3 wheels. Imagine how many Replica Audi GT3 wheels they'd sell? or AMG.. etc etc. Course Ferrari is off limits, due to thrustmaster having that exclusivity deal. Seriously. Despite having a CSX 2, which I absolutely adore and love beyond all else, its a beautiful bit of high end kit. I find myself, due to using VR and love racing the ol 650 GT3. I use my McLaren GT3 wheel A LOT. It feels comfortable and its sturdy as heck despite being all plastic construction. With the metal QR on it for my DD2, its a real workhorse. Yet I also have my Formula V2 and Formula V2 F1 Esports, the forged carbon edition from F1 2021. I find myself using these more, course I use my CSX for LMP1's, Formula and so forth.. but its never my go to GT wheel. Thats always my McLaren and V2 F1 Esports wheel.
I had first the McLaren wheel when i ordered the CSL DD, but after a week i sent the wheel back and got the Formula V2.5 (non-X) because the McLaren just did not feel premium enough for me tbh and when i am spending this kind of money on a setup i need the thing that i am actually touching all of the time to feel nice. Also shifter paddles did not give me that satisfaction feeling on the McLaren wheel. I reckon that as far as form factor goes its better than the Formula, but overall the Formula is a no brainer for me especially if you count in that you get the 100€ QR1 included with the wheel which if you'd do it with the McLaren wheel you'd be just 50 bucks shy of the Formula and its way better quality.
At this moment, I have a McLaren v1 with clubsport QR and recently got a Formula F1 with APM shifter (from PS4 DD1 bundle). I like the premium feel and also the rumble motor of the formula and also the magnetic shifters feel. But the McLaren GT3 also have the dual bite clutch, plenty of buttons and it costs almost half of the price. I prefer McLaren's design and size. I also love that I can shift gears with one hand only if I need. It would be nice to have leather or alcantara grips on McLaren though... I haven't decided if I sell the formula or not...
The McLaren wheel is ridiculously functional and I do love it, but I agree that the one trick they missed was having removable handgrips which could be customised or upholstered. Pineapple Grips does this for the Formula wheel, but as the McLaren has molded rubber grips it's not as achievable.
I have the PlayStation DD1 bundle and I just find the f1 v2 too small for me so I ordered the Mclaren v2 and plan on taking the QR off my f1 rim and putting it in on the Mclaren
@@offdapace2627 I would exchange that blue QR with a black one with no problem... But we should be far away from each other. 😜 I am pretty sure you will love the McLaren GT3!!
@@offdapace2627 this wheel has a black Qr... Maybe the 1st owner replaced it. He only had the wheel for a few days and didn't use it... But maybe he replaced it.
i‘m using the mclaren v2 wheel with qr for acc. the wheel has much better ergonomics for a gt game. my car handling became much better. from a quality aspect the f1 wheels are the better productline, but by a functional aspect i prefer the mclaren wheel.
Nobody's talking about the Clubsport F1 Esport wheel....? Why's that ignored? I have that wheel. 270 Euros. Fits nicely in between those two wheels. I never tried those two wheels so I'll never know. But I imagine the Esport wheel will be well built and be strong like that Formula V2 wheel, but fewer buttons than the McLaren. I managed to squeeze all the functions I need onto the limited number of buttons available and quite happy with that when playing ACC. And you should be able to slap my Esport wheel onto a Podium without the Force Feedback torque being restricted like those poor buggers who own the McLaren wheel missing out on more torque fun. All because of different quick-release hub models used. I think the Esport wheel is the PERFECT compromise between the McLaren and the Club Sport V2 wheel. Price, build quality and number of buttons. The only thing I hate about my esport wheel is the button caps fall out in the middle of use. Thats about it.
Help me understand: I have a GT DD Pro bundle... The GT steering wheel has the plastic connection. I took the upgraded version to 8nm and it runs at 8nm power. Why does the McLaren steering wheel not operate at maximum power if the quick release accessory is not purchased?
The plastic quick release only triggers the power limit when mounted on a DD1 or DD2 wheelbase, which have 20/25nm of torque and can detect when the plastic QR is used. Power is not limited on the GT DD Pro as it only has 8nm torque so you can use the plastic OR metal quick release and the power output will not be affected. In other words, as you have a GT DD Pro you're not affected by the power limit.
I'm considering getting the McL V2. How would the shifters compare to my F1 V2 + APM and UH ( /w 285mm D-shape rim) + CS MPM magnetic shifters? I do already have a spare QR1 laying around (considering buying an adapter to mount a 70mm rim directly to it otherwise, for Rally) *yes those rotary encoders SUCK. There's a mod you can do to fix it mostly, but you have to 3D print and/or find the right parts and take the wheel apart. Big letdown of this rim. *rev lights are cool! until you switch to VR only :P
Question about either wheel - How do you reassign buttons for GT7? When I load the controller menu in game, neither of these wheels shows up. Do you have to use a PC to remap buttons?

This video has been great thank you
I have a formula v2.5x and was completely contempt with it until watching this video. Now I want both. My bank account will never forgive you
Good advice. I believe, for my low budget, I am good with the hard plastic
Things you can say both here and at the plastic surgeon
Loving your content man! Keep it up! I'm team formula for the future ability to go dd without compromise, more buttons, and look!
You should do asmr videos lol
Dude, clear, concise and excellent content, keep it up, sub’d
Great video. Led me to buy the McLaren over the Formula just now. I clicked your affiliate link on my phone then ordered from PC, so I hope you still get the affiliate sale for it. I did click your link again on my PC, but AFTER I already ordered. Either way, thanks much for the solid review.
Oh, also the McLaren v2 wheel has sold out. I'm selling mine. Have decided to go all in and just bought the Formula V2 wheel. Let me know if interested. I'll be selling it for full retail plus shipping, btw.
Is it considered used?
Excellent comparison, thank you.
Great video, cheers mate!
I would be happy if the wheels get full support on Xbox Series X instead of having assignment issues for the buttons and display & rev lights not working. Do you know when full compatibility with Xbox will be supported?
Xbox only allows for a certain number of buttons to be assigned. Every wheel has this problem even G923’s because the gas, brake, and steering are 3 inputs right there
Nice review mate
I’m not a big mclaren fan really and it annoys me if I got a different cars brand wheel to the car I’m driving in game 😄 hence why I went for the V2.
I would love nothing more than to have the choice between Mclaren, Aston, Merc etc. I hope it's coming...
bought a formula v2.5x wheel for my csl dd.. it just looks better imo and i feel like i need the extra buttons too.. coming from a t300rs
I prefer the f1 wheel but am on a budget as am moving from thrustmaster to fanatec setup 😩
I got the gt3 wheel on its way after the 19th have it pre ordered
Nice - enjoy it, my Formula V2 has entered retirement.
Would the Fanatec CSL DD work fine with the McLaren wheel?
Absolutely - a good match
@@dannyleeracing Awesome! Thank you.
Both wheels work on ps5 and xbox too thats cool
“As you lose hold of yourself and slide deeper into the sim racing ether” 😂😂 I was literally thinking get the formula and upgrade the paddles eventually and then you said that!
Rock solid review - subscribed.
Cheers mate, thanks for watching and leaving a comment
I have both... my Formula V2 has the advanced paddle module..... The Mclaren rim hasn't come off my rig since I got it and made the decision between the 2
Already have one preordered and shipping in the next days - watching this video gets me so excited as i've been using a standard fanatec wheel for formula racing. Thanks!
The only thing that still bothers me as an xbox user is the limited button configuration options - anyone else bothered by this?
I made the change from xbox to pc and the jump is incredible for using all of the buttons. the rev lights are useess on xbox, unfortunately.
@@nickhitchcock3277 good to know, its insane microsoft are doing nothing about it - PlayStation have 28 custom buttons 😅
The wheel itself though - its epic
Thanks mate, I just orderd the mclaren wheel with my CSL DD
hi, how did you find the CSL DD? Fanatec website does not promote CSL wheel base anymore?
Prefer McLaren v2 wheel, larger dia, and the 1 pc shifter paddle is the best with zero flex, can shift up or down from either side too
Good video! I think I’m going to get the formula v2.5 d!
awesome video! very informative and right to the point.
The decision, which one to buy is, I think, the hardest decision i´ve ever made... xd
my mclaren v2 wheel has started squeaking ... getting on my nerves.. might sell it
I sent it back. Fucked it off for a formula v2 and its the best decision i ever made
I had first the McLaren wheel when i ordered the CSL DD, but after a week i sent the wheel back and got the Formula V2.5 (non-X) because the McLaren just did not feel premium enough for me tbh and when i am spending this kind of money on a setup i need the thing that i am actually touching all of the time to feel nice. Also shifter paddles did not give me that satisfaction feeling on the McLaren wheel. I reckon that as far as form factor goes its better than the Formula, but overall the Formula is a no brainer for me especially if you count in that you get the 100€ QR1 included with the wheel which if you'd do it with the McLaren wheel you'd be just 50 bucks shy of the Formula and its way better quality.
did you add the premium magnetic shifters on the formula or just keep them standard?
@@fatdoggolovespizza i kept the standard ones which are also magnetic ones, love them.
I am pretty sure you will love the McLaren GT3!!
@@nunoferraz did you not get a blue QR with your DD1 bundle or are you keeping it on the F1 rim ?
@@offdapace2627 this wheel has a black Qr... Maybe the 1st owner replaced it. He only had the wheel for a few days and didn't use it... But maybe he replaced it.
I wish they wouldve used real carbon on the McLaren wheel, theming my rig after McLaren but kinda want both. Great review btw!
Thank for the “Crocodile Contingency” test results. Now, I don’t have to run my own test. Crocodile rental is EXPENSIVE!
i‘m using the mclaren v2 wheel with qr for acc. the wheel has much better ergonomics for a gt game. my car handling became much better. from a quality aspect the f1 wheels are the better productline, but by a functional aspect i prefer the mclaren wheel.
Does the CSL DD work at 8nm with 8nm power pack if you use the McLaren plastic quick release?
Yes
Thats about it.
as soon as I got to the crocodile picture it was an instant Like And Subscribe lol Great Video
If I knew you had the affiliate link before buying my DD and McLaren wheel I would have def used it, gonna save it for when I get the bmw wheel
Brilliant comparison
i do plan to buy Fanatec F1 coz it comes with the motor
Are u not missing the motors for vibration going back to the gt3?
The Formula V2 works in GT DD pro base? Also in PS5 ?
Very nice video mate thank you for this! Extremely helpful👍🏼
Cheers man, thanks for watching and the feedback!
I'm considering getting the McL V2. How would the shifters compare to my F1 V2 + APM and UH ( /w 285mm D-shape rim) + CS MPM magnetic shifters?
I do already have a spare QR1 laying around (considering buying an adapter to mount a 70mm rim directly to it otherwise, for Rally)
*yes those rotary encoders SUCK.
Which wheels do you have exactly?
Great video ! I ordered the Mclaren GT3 V2 with your affiliation link, hope it will work. Thanks !
Thanks man, appreciate it - it definitely makes a difference
Nice video mate thanks
New Fanatec user here Cant wait to try it.
Please could you tell me where you got the coloured buttons from for the formula V2 x. PLEASE.🙏👃

I switched from the McLaren to the Formula and didn't regret it.
Where's the video showing how to lower the noise of the magnetic shifters of the McLaren GT3 V2 wheel
Here it is, bloke man: ruclips.net/video/7e9w0MikMd8/видео.html
Thanks, nice job.
I’ve got a V2 and ClubSport wheel base, it’s great but I’ve noticed it clips so much. I’ve no idea how to fix it
Donde puedo conseguir esos botones??
What are your thoughts on the upcoming bmw wheel? That thing looks insane - both the idea of it and probably for the wallet.
well it's going to be over 2000 euro probably
are u talking about the m3 gt2 wheel? or is it a different one?
Does anyone know anyway you can get a fanatec setup (wheel wheel base and pedals) for Less money because damn they’re expensive
My friend bought one and it wouldn’t sync with the PS4
I never use F1 cars in ac. would prefer a larger diameter wheel to use in gt3
Lol, still don’t know which one to get. Had the McLaren v1 but got a refund due to the shift problems.
Yeah, heard the V1 had a bit of a gremlin on board
I sold my V2 at almost full price and got the GT3 and the Rally wheel, great decision.
