  • Both wheels are great, but as they share a lot in common yet have a massive price difference, it's hard to decide which to go for. Here are numerous pinch points that might be swaying you one way or the other, and what I think about them.
    As usual, I bought everything you see with my own beans and nobody asked me to review them, but all of you viewing, commenting, subscribing and supporting me with clicks and feedback does result in a great incentive to press on. Thank you for watching!

    Thanks for this Danny. Have been using the basic xbox CSL elite wheel in an attempt to keep costs down when first ordered simracing kit. It's ok but was just never fully happy with it and always wanted a square wheel. Now in position to get new wheel and was focused on the F2 V2.5 , mainly because I got excited over the thumb encodes. But now after watching this I can see that the McLaren wheel is the more level headed choice for me, thanks for the help. I won't split the savings with you but I will be subscribed from now.

    I owned the V1 McLaren rim which I loved (had the clubsport QR) until it gave up due to the dodgy shifters which they’ve now changed. In the end I asked Fanatec for an exchange with the Formula rim and it’s a tricky one to pick between the two.
    I find the extra vibrations in the Formula really helped with feel for me. Aside from that there isn’t much between them, but like you I do find the McLaren design much more attractive and I may end up buying a V2 again just as a spare rim.
    Finally, as I owned both I found this a nice comparison. You’re really clear and concise with your videos and I can only see this channel growing further. Keep it up man and hope to see you on track one day!

    I got the Formula V2 wheel, felt the hype and ordered the McLaren V2 wheel. Plan was to sell the Formula wheel bit didn´t like the McLaren wheel so ended up selling that instead. The Formula wheel feels just so much luxurious and well built. But yeah the McLaren is great value 👍🏻 Nice video mate!

    Fantastic comparison. I upgraded to Fanatec from Logitech on Black Friday. I started with the Rally Wheel as that’s what I mostly drive. I dabble a little in ACC so wanted a square wheel too but thought I’d wait and see what wheels they announced as the Formula V2 seemed a bit rich for me for a category of racing I only dabble in and suck at. Well the day the McLaren V2 was announced, it looked perfect so I immediately ordered. It arrived yesterday and I fired up ACC and gave it a try. I love it! My only slight concern was the lack of thumb wheels. Thanks for putting that concern to rest.

    Great review and agree with most you say. Have the McLaren GT3 and formula Carbon. At the end of the day, you are not looking at your steering wheel but what you are doing in the race and functionality in both is fine unless you are an e-sports driver. The McLaren GT3 is the go to wheel for most of the sims I play, but do slightly prefer the formula wheel for open wheel races. If I had a choice of one or the other, would choose the McLaren GT3 every day of the week and is the one that I use 90% of the time no-matter which format I am racing, excluding rallying or drifting of course. The rubber on the wheel feels fine and the grip indents and feel are amazing.

      @@alessandrozucchiatti6814 I own the gt2 as well and almost never touch it. There is more to a wheel than materials quality. The ergonomics and performance are paramount over anything else imho.

    I own one of the original McLaren V1 wheels bought when Fanatec offered a bundle that included the Clubsport metal QR for a really good price. I have had no problems period out of my V1 wheel over the last couple of years. It has been my daily driver and to me for a combination GT/Formula car wheel set up is awesome. I have ordered a V2 wheel as I do want a spare just in case.
    I will try the new V2 wheel as it does have some upgrades such as the magnetic shifters and I will transfer my metal QR over to the new wheel just because I have it and I can.

    GT3 V2 on a DD1 needs the CSQR addon. The standard simplified QR causes issues with the DD1. The V2 has a few ergo issues that killed it for me. I have the V2 with APM's. I use the top right paddle for DRS and I can't even remember what the top left paddle is mapped to. The two thumb dials are mapped to brake bias and differential, though I also can't remember which is which because I hardly ever change them in a race.
    The V2 is kind of overkill for my style of driving, and even though it's nice to know all those dials and switches are there if I need them, I may have been better off going with a Formula Esports or Formula Carbon rim and spent the extra cash on the Club Sport pedals.
    Also, does anyone else have issues with the Fanatec button caps snapping in half or just falling off? I have had half the caps snap in half, while the other half just don't want to stay on anymore. Did I just get a faulty batch?

      Fanatec make them, they'll be there under accessories or as an added extra when you checkout. You're looking for the Button Cap and Sticker Set: fanatec.com/eu-en/accessories/steering-wheel-accessories/button-caps-and-sticker-set?FAP+Banner&General+Links&a_aid=5f3d21d010f77

    Has anybody that ordered this wheel in the USA know how long it takes to ship, currently it says it won't be available until June 30th. Do you guys know if that's just an estimate or exact ?

    its not locked by software, its locked by a pastic pin that depresses a button inside the wheel, located on the quick release, grind it off, no limitation, can recommend for 15NM, never used it past that due to being cheaply made

    i‘m using the mclaren v2 wheel with qr for acc. the wheel has much better ergonomics for a gt game. my car handling became much better. from a quality aspect the f1 wheels are the better productline, but by a functional aspect i prefer the mclaren wheel.

    Hi me again. Just a quick question, I only heard about a fanatec driver thing today. As an xbox player, do I really need to plug it into my laptop and install it there? Or can I just plug it into my xbox (as I've bought the csl base and pedals with the gt3 v2 as well) and what do the drivers do? Thank you, you are a huge help!

    • @dannyleeracing
      @dannyleeracing  3 года назад +1

      Unfortunately yes, you do need a Windows device to update the firmware on the wheelbase - you'd have to connect the wheelbase to your PC/laptop which has the Fanatec driver software installed. From there, your Fanatec Wheel Properties utility has the ability to update your hardware firmware. There are guides on this and it's important to go slow and read carefully as firmware updates are like opening the brain of the electronics, they must not be interrupted or they could be left inoperable.
      However, firmware updates are not absolutely essential, if your wheelbase works with the games you play then updating firmware is an optional extra. However, when I bought my WRC wheel my wheelbase needed updating to recognise it, that's a case where firmware updates were mandatory to get it to work.
      Firmware updates are usually done if an error or quirk in the system is detected, new games are released or updated which cause your hardware to stop working exactly as intended, and so on. They're just updates for your hardware, delivered manually.

    Help me understand: I have a GT DD Pro bundle... The GT steering wheel has the plastic connection. I took the upgraded version to 8nm and it runs at 8nm power. Why does the McLaren steering wheel not operate at maximum power if the quick release accessory is not purchased?

    • @dannyleeracing
      @dannyleeracing  Год назад

      The plastic quick release only triggers the power limit when mounted on a DD1 or DD2 wheelbase, which have 20/25nm of torque and can detect when the plastic QR is used. Power is not limited on the GT DD Pro as it only has 8nm torque so you can use the plastic OR metal quick release and the power output will not be affected.
      In other words, as you have a GT DD Pro you're not affected by the power limit.

      I have the DD GT Pro which comes with the same QR and it’s awful. Super loud cracking/popping noises. Replaced with the QR1 and that solved the problem completely. Would never use the plastic QR so for me the price diff is negligible since the formula comes with the good QR. I like the features of the formula but want a larger wheel like the Mick.

    different size (30 vs 27mm)
    Real 5mm Carbon plate (not cheap plastic)
    Aluminum Quick release adaptor (value $80 + shipping cost).(if you want play in dd1 or dd2. you have to buy this for use full torque)
    Led light (rpm and others)
    two vabration motor intergrade with handle grib (this is most delight function in this wheel.)
    and, some more buttons.

    At 5:05 "if you're worried the McLaren wheel has more flex....." It does. I bought the McLaren GT3 V2. At 7 months old it felt as if the left grip was flexing. Then the grip broke off at the bottom and wheel is unusable.There's a thin plastic protrusion into the grip and this fractured. Sent video and pictures to Fanatec support. At my expense I am to post the wheel back but they reckoned that the wheel had been dropped, which it definitely hasn't. So haven't much faith in how they will proceed with this. Not sure what to do I could end up with the added expense of sending the wheel back and if they decide it's not going to be fixed under warranty it's going to be just over $60 per hour to fix. As well I was using the wheel on a CSL elite for PS4 base so not direct drive.

    My V2 finally arrived after over a months wait. It does feel very nice and the quality is second to none. The only issue I have come across are the paddle shifters. For me they are very close to the rim and leaves a very small gap making it a little tricky to get my fingers off the rim and engage the paddle.
