I just purchased a vintage Silver Reed SK-360. It didn't come with punch cards, so I got to either purchase cards or make my own. Your info is really helpful.
If you have a Silver Reed dealer near you, they should be able to supply a set of basic cards. Otherwise, buying blanks and a punch is a good idea. The card patterns can be found on Needles of Steel website.
Thank you, this was very helpful. Have a Silver Reed 700 and a Singer/Studio both with Ribber. I have all original punchcards as well as some that were punched by the previous owner of these machines.
Thank you for this discussion. I just acquired a Singer punch card knitting machine standard gauge without any cards. I have been reluctant to purchase any or the materials to create cards not being sure what was what.
Thank you for this helpful video. Is it possible to clip, say, about three sections of punchcard together to make one card of several sections? For instance, if I make a bunch of small cards with just one fairisle pattern of between 6 and 12 rows each, and then join them together in different combinations? Or would it be better to just make a few full length (or 36-40+) cards and just exchange each one midway through when I want to use a band or pattern that I've put on another card? If the latter, how easy is it to change cards midway through, given that you can't see the row that has just knit or is just about to because the last bit of the pattern you can see going in to knit is five rows above what's about to be knit?
I have a pattern with an 8 stitch repeat, but my bulky machine takes a 12 stitch repeat card. Am I required to use a 12 stitch repeat when using the punch card feature of my machine? Thank you for the help.
Can you please do a video to right the name on the cuff of a christmas stocking ? I can't remember how to do it, I'm driving myself crazy, it would be much appreciated, I'm reading from a time to save time by Sande Baas-- - - Marty Godle aski
Please if I want to use the punch card which side will I put the handle inoder for the machine to accept the punch card and what will make a punch card not to work on d machine
what makes the R punchcards for the ribber any different from the other punchcards? I can not imagine how the drums can control the ribber needles. Always wondered about that?
The R punchcards aren’t any different in use to any other cards and they don’t move or control the ribber needles. You need to bear in mind that you use these cards when knitting a double bed fabric, or full needle rib, as opposed to ribbing. The texture is still made on the knitter face of the fabric, but there is also texture and pattern visible on the ribber side too. Double bed fabrics have the advantage of sitting nice and flat. You’ll need fine yarn to knit double bed, 2 or 3 ply in U.K. terms. 4 ply is a bit too thick.
Sally, I have a 12 column Elna bulky & would like to try punch lace. Any idea how I could adapt some Brother designs from the standard? Since there's no lace carriage, could I just make the designs symmetrical?
Hi Jan, you could adapt any standard 24 st design as long as the pattern repeat also fits into 12, ie repeats of 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12 stitches. Punch lace uses a main yarn, plus a much thinner filament or fine self coloured yarn to create the effect of “holes”. Experiment and have fun!
Do those two rows of fully punched lines register to the machine at all? Like if I want to make a pattern that is continuous will I then have two blank lines or are those ignored and my pattern will match up as I drew it in the full 60 rows??
The two fully blank rows are designed to OVERLAP the punched pattern rows, so - no - they don’t register as separate pattern rows unless you join the cards incorrectly.
Hi Jan, you can weave with the normal carriage either manually or with punchcard/electronic patterning. The AW1 weaving arm just transfers the weaving yarn from side to side automatically, making it a bit quicker.

Yes, you will need to fill the full 12 spaces across the card, unless you want empty strips through your vertical pattern

They are of course also used for double bed jacquard, or float less Fairisle.

Hi sally if you want to weave on a knitting machine do you have to use a weaving carriage?? Or your normal carriage sorry I’m a newbie thanks
