Introduction to Machine Knitting on a Silver Reed Punchcard Machine - Video One
This is the first in a series of nine videos designed to get the total beginner started on their knitting machine. It’s intended for any metal bed punchcard machine manufactured by Silver Reed or - as they were previously known around the world - Knitmaster, Singer or Studio.
These machines all use a patterning mechanism of two drums located on the back of the machine carriage. Irrespective of model number, if your machine has this two drum patterning system, these videos will apply to you.
I have filmed on a standard gauge SK280 model, which is still available brand new. The chunky/bulky model is the SK155, also still available new. If you have the plastic bed LK150 I have a separate seri...

Machine Knitting on the Silver Reed Punchcard Machine - Video Two - Set up and Yarn Prep
Просмотров 1462 часа назад
In this second video, I talk about yarn choices and the importance of using yarn of the correct weight and type, especially whilst learning. Many beginners stumble because they’re trying to knit with yarn that is too thick, or of an unforgiving non-stretchy fibre, such as cotton.
Intro to Machine Knitting on the Silver Reed Punchcard - Video Three - Open and Temporary cast on
Просмотров 1752 часа назад
There are several different cast on methods which can be used on a knitting machine, and each method has its appropriate uses. In this third video, I demonstrate two methods of temporary cast on, user for practice and swatches, and for the process of making turned hems and mock ribs. Neither would be suitable as a finished edge on a garment, but are important elements of the machine knitter’s r...

In this fourth video, I show different methods of making a closed, or fixed edge cast on. These can be used to make a finished edge on a garment, or whenever it’s essential to stop the work unravelling from the bottom.

This series was designed to show you the bare minimum of machine knitting techniques required to construct a basic garment - namely, a sweater. All too often lovely neat knitting is let down by untidy or badly executed sewing up. This video shows two useful techniques for making up - backstitching a neckband and mattress stitching an invisible seam. I hope at the completion of this series you w...
Machine Knitting on the Silver Reed Punchcard Machine - Video Eight - the Tension or Gauge Swatch
Просмотров 1052 часа назад
Being able to make and measure a proper tension piece, or gauge swatch, is absolutely essential if you want your items to turn out the correct size, and for you to make garments that fit. Silver Reed invented the useful gadget, known as the green ruler, even though technically it’s a scale, not a ruler. It enables you to make - in a matter of minutes - an accurate swatch in any yarn, any stitch...

LK150 SERIES - Video 6 Using Holding Position for Garment Shaping
This series is so great! I have an older Studio 700 and I love it. Someone who was a good machine knitter got me started and I’ve picked other things up through videos and books. But you are such a great teacher and I truly appreciate your efforts at producing these and sharing them. Thank you so much!
Hi Sally just cought this channel by chance. this is great I have an old empisal 360 that also says studio on it. i baught on ebay it has the tool box and knit litter that i don't know how to use yet but would love to learn. it came with some patterns for it but all look to samll as there i think from the 60s. i fixed it up back to working condition. I'v been learning alot but i'm sure theres still alot i don't know. so looking very much so to learn more and watching your channel more. Thank You for posting this as alot of the others post brother machines and bits and peices of singer machines. I like that this will be all about just singer. Thank You again
does anyone in the USA sale these?
@@EsteeDarla yes if you Google “Silver Reed Dealers” several options should appear.
@@sallybutcherskalamundakrafts thank you so much,
Here’s my probably very obvious question.. once done with the bottom ribbing can you re attach to the ribber to work on neck section? I can’t seem to figure this out!
@@millysmoonnursery2011 yes, you can. When I shape the top of my sweaters for the neck opening, I put all the stitches into hold. Join one should seam. Then pick up the neck stitches onto the main bed, knit 1 row then transfer to rib arrangement. Knit the ribbing double depth, followed by three rows of stocking stitch and remove on plenty of waste knitting, at least 10 rows. Join the other shoulder and the neck seam. Turn the neck to the OUTSIDE, then backstitch it into place through the open loops. Remove the waste. This produces a beautiful neat and stretchy neck. It is demonstrated in the projects on the Facebook group Machine Knitting Beginners and Returners Circle.
Thank you so much, for the very informative tutorial, it was wonderful!
Hello Sally, I have had my LK150 for about 3 weeks now and I am following your videos as I go. In this one I am happy to see that all the things that go wrong with me, you have the same problems. 😊. I am knitting finger-less gloves for the needy kids. I would like to knit a 2x1 rib but I don't want holes. The rib can only be single not turned up as that would make it too thick and probably too tight. After doing a simple e-cast on I knit 10 rows. At that point I am concerned that I will get a row of holes which I don't want. Any way to overcome that situation please? Aside, when I saw Kalamunda I assumed you were in Perth Western Australia, as we lived near there. Kind regards, JennyB.
Hi Jenny - to avoid the holes, you have to pick up a heel stitch from the adjacent needle and put on the empty one - same way as you do an increase. The name Kalamunda is because my dad visited the area during the war, his vessel was in for repairs, and the crew were billeted out to families in the area. He stayed in Kalamunda. Unfortunately, we don't know with whom he stayed, but he always said how much he enjoyed it there.
Fascination! But why does the machine need to do one pattern as ordinary lace and the other as fashion lace?
@@KarlSmith-p5r it depends on how the lace pattern is built up, especially if the transfers go in opposite directions.
i'm working on a collection to apply for grad school for fashion, and this was extremely helpful!! i had no idea what i was doing. thank you so much for this video
@@cattailsss I’m glad it was helpful for you
I have singer mod 150 I think, l bought a punch card for it on amazon but it didn’t work, , the punch card got inside the chamber perfectly, and it moves as move the carriage across bit the pattern in many show on the work . What am I doing wrong?
@@TheJadesola87 the pattern selector PS150 doesn’t convert your machine to pattern automatically. There should be a 12 pin needle selector with it. You push the needle selector into the card reader to select the right pushers. Then you use the pushers to manually put the required needles out to D position. You must also select the correct levers so that the carriage slips or holds stitches. Coloured patterns are created by knitting two rows alternately in different colours.
Fantastic! Thank you so much, I greatly appreciate your instructions.
I like the first one as well. Thank you!
You are such an amazing instructor. The best on the internet. I have the lk 150 and I am thinking about purchasing the silver reed. Thank you!

Buona sera Sally, mi sai dire dove posso comprare i rulers or scales che adoperi per contare le maglie e le righe. Grazie mille
@@adafreda4703 buona sera - you can buy them from a Silver Reed dealer. Andee Knits in the U.K. will post overseas
A presto, Ada
@@adafreda4703 Hi Ada, a green one for the 600 is perfect. For the LK100 you need a blue one because it’s a chunky machine. If you cannot get a blue one, knit the swatch according to the BLUE instructions, then measure with the green one and HALVE the results. Join the Machine Knitting Beginners and Returners Circle on Facebook where there are instructions for all the coloured rulers.
Good!

Hi Sally, that’s an excellent video. I managed to pick up one of these yesterday. It has a couple of missing parts. The first one yours looks missing as well and it’s to do with the beater bar There’s a bit missing across the top of it. Well, I downloaded a knitking manual as it was free rather than buying the weave master manual. The main piece that’s missing seems to be where the actual weave master attaches to the knitting machine. To the side of it there are letters ABCD and E and a slot well, I think the missing part goes. Would it be possible? You could send me over a picture of how you connect yours? The machine is so old and rare I very much doubt I’m ever gonna be able to purchase this part but I’m wondering look if I could look at it I could make a workaround, any help? I would be really grateful thanks rachel.

Hello, I have just bought a singer 321 and tried all methods to cast on but my machine just ties the yarn around the brushes or misses many stitches and leaves a hanging loop. The machine has just come back from a complete overhaul but I just cant get it to cast on. This is one part I like; Part 4 at 7:20. Any ideas please? I have also tried to follow your videos but to no avail. ruclips.net/video/vN4VJfgCA7Q/видео.htmlsi=SX9C_Z9SLTK2N7Y6 Sorry to post this here but it took a while to find one of your videos. Regards JennyB
@@JennyB-oj6sk this guy is using a different machine, it’s an old push button model, therefore not directly comparable to the 321. In the Machine Knitting Beginners and Returners Circle on Facebook you can find all of my tutorials. At the point you indicate on the video, the knitter has all his needles out to D position. If the Russell levers on the front of your carriage are at II, they will knit back. If the levers are at I, they won’t knit. Is there a knitting club near where you live? Finding a fellow knitter might help you.
Hello Sally, I have just bought a Singer 321 but I need a cast on comb. Are the Brother and others the same as the ones for singer? There seems to be a big difference in price on eBay. Regards, JennyB.
@@JennyB-oj6sk a cast on comb is not necessary (I never use one), but if you wish to use one, the Brother comb is suitable.

It is based on a KAL I did on Facebook, in the Machine Knitting Beginners and Returners Circle, which gives a series of schematics in basic sizes. And then I did a follow up video explaining how I designed and calculated the “patchwork” version. If you join the group, all the information is free.
A very informative video Sally and I really admire anyone who can punch a whole card with the pop punches. In the days before dye cutting machines I used the PM10 (or I paid someone to cut my cards for me!). Just as a note, at the risk of sounding pedantic (sorry!) at 4:46 Toyota machines don't use a belt mechanism, they use a grooved rotating rod that engages with the carriage and moves the needles. The rod spins backwards and forwards in time with the carriage movement - just as the belt mechanism would slide side to side (and in IMHO is much more reliable than the belt system which is prone to slipping).
@@countkostaki thanks for letting me know about the Toyota machines, glad you like the videos. I actually find card punching quite therapeutic!
