The Tina Turner of 4x4 - simply the best - my 2005 currently 370K miles and enjoyment only improves with age. Definitely a keeper for that 1 million....
Never thought I'd hear a LC be compared to Tina Turner, but I like it..
At 370k what kind of problems have you had that you needed to address other than the key serviceable items like timing belt/water pump etc?

@@driveonthestraightpath2138 in other Toyotas, yes. I have not seen it on the LC100. And it is usually accompanied by traction control and stability control lights.
for 270k miles not giving you any mechanical problem in a year its pretty good , i believe some people wish their cars main problems were a worn out seat and steering wheel...
I have a 2004 with 290k miles. Everything is done by the book and have had no issues. I love that as long as I pay for the gas and stay on top of maintenance nothing goes wrong. No matter the weather. The only “mod” I have is two sets of 16” wheels from a ‘00 LX470 (one for winter) as it rides much better than the original 18’s.
'06 LX470 owner (155k miles). It is an amazing car, I'm not planning on selling it, but even the best built cars (and their parts) wear out.
Before I bought it, the mechanic selling it did $3.5k (market value) of mileage-driven maintenance beforehand (e.g.: timing belt, seals, etc.).
A year into ownership, I took it to my local indy and got quoted $8.0k to fix different items I notice ($1.6k of which was necessary - e.g. CV boot - , the rest I just live with for now - e.g.: leaky shocks, play in the steering).
Three conclusions:
1. Most maintenance items that come up don't 100% have to be done then... which is nice (unlike my experience with BMW)
2. Parts are really expensive (even compared to my experience with BMW and VW)
3. Please don't buy one thinking the legendary build quality will save you $ - parts on even the greatest cars wear out
My 2002 Toyota LC100 is now 430.000 km and still run perfectly. Never had any mechanical or electrical trouble, and I just made standard maintenance
I’ve had my 2000 LC for 7 years and it’s at 240k now and got it at 170k. It’s definitely a keeper for another 100k

mpgs are not even that bad for me, sold a 17 tundra supercharged with a lift and big tires and bought the cruiser (98 with 175k) . It was a pain to fill up the tundra and was getting 9mpg in a good day on a downhill road... im loving my 100 series, slowly restoring it to its former glory and holding on to it
Great video with lots of good commentary. I agree with your overall view of it. It's not perfect, it has issues, but when you look at all the tradeoffs the LC is a fantastic long term keeper! Subscribed!

Love to know about the rims you have on this one and if they fit a 2000 - I know different years don't always keep the same specs.
Closing in on 384k and other than a couple of odd, expensive fixes since I bought it in '03 (starter, steering column), regular maintenance has allowed pretty trouble-free driving. The wear points he mentions in the video are all spot on. But for what you get out of it, it's worth more to me than anything anyone is going to give me for it - AND even with the couple of large repairs and the lousy mileage, it's still cheaper than a car payment. I like the fact you can still do a lot of your own work on this - can't say the same on almost anything newer that's available, plus the associated cost.
Love that yours is still plugging along! Ironically these wheels are off a 2000 model. Just painted them black.
The 4x4 van won't be able to go to the more technical areas that have lots of ruts, inclines, or rocks... so that's one reason to keep. Love my LX470! its a tank!

I have been using his car since 2001 it so good even after 21 years of continues use it wonderful car durable dependable I drove long distance s a thousands of kilometers in every trip it was amazing in road or off roads the only setback is fuel economy

I own a 2002 Lexus 470V8 on LPG with 180k miles. I live this truck although I have two quality complaints: rust and leather quality which are both worse then other cars. I love: lack of electronics, engine reliability, payload and over-designed ruggedness.
Hi from the uk! I currently own two Landcruiser 100s, but over here they do the 4.2 turbo diesel.
This is a straight 6 and, with carefull driving I get between 26 and 30pg. The cost of diesel here is higher than yours at @ £8 per gallon, so running costs are not far off yours.
I remember when you posted the first video when you bought this Cruiser. After seeing that video I went out and bought an LX470. I now also own a 1996 FZJ80(scored it off Marketplace for $1k before the pandemic) and a 200 series L.C.

Happy New Year, I’ve got the younger brother 03 GX470 Land Cruiser Prado, similar issues overall rock solid truck, valve cover gasket has started leaking I know pretty common theme among the UZ motors. But did the center dif, rear dif fluids. I’m eventually getting the timing belt done once it nears 180K mark with OEM or OEM+ goodies the laundry list is ready.
Happy new year! A buddy of mine was a tech at a Toyota/Lexus dealership and he said they'd often just tighten the fasteners on the valve covers and the leak will stop. Not sure what it is about these engines but apparently they're often loose
😂 those seats look new compared to some new cars after only a few months. Absolutely hilarious. Steering wheel too in 100% better shape than a lot of 10 year old cars w less miles. Amazing.
One issue I have with my 99 is that an engine coil fails periodically. It is an easy fix but must be fixed. I went ahead and bought a few Denso coils this last time so that 1) I have them for immediate repair and 2) much cheaper online than local dealership or part stores.
Took a while to figure this one out, but you actually need new spark plugs. When they wear, the gap gets too large and the plugs overheat causing the coils to go bad. They should be changed every 100k.
Have a '99 with 220k miles. This is mostly accurate but don't get it twisted: a twenty year old truck--even an TLC--needs maintenance and that maintenance can get expensive fast. Between the timing belt, new shocks, new starter, new CV joints, and a new manifold I'm $5k deep in 15 months. Love the ride, love the 4x4 prowess and the space... but don't expect one of these to be a breezy "only brake pads and oil changes" maintenance experience. The gas mileage-eventually-becomes a darkly hilarious joke. I almost never drive over 60mph and it's still horrendous. That said: I've never been in a vehicle that handles off-road/forest service roads better, especially in deep winter conditions. You're insane if you buy one of these for a long daily commute, but there's no better camping/expedition vehicle for the money.

The Toyota Engineer that designed the 100 series said he designed it to go 500,000 miles.

Really like the front grill, which one is that? Also understand the van debate, have a van coming in July and won’t have the same use case for the LC. The one thing to consider is how long you plan to keep the van.

Unfortunately, the US never got diesels like we do here in Europe and the rest of the world. A diesel 100 series gets closer to 18 mpg. . .

I have a 2003 land cruiser 5 speed automatic and I get 14.5 liters per 130 klm so I use 45 liters and get 390 klm on my small flags tank and the main. Tank I get 1000 klm and I am happy with my land cruiser

Anyone have an idea for fixing front seats wear and tear? Hard to find OEM seats. Havent had much luck around Los Angeles looking for someone to reappolsture them.
For LC owners, what did it cost you to do the timing belt and water pump? I currently own a 4th gen 4Runner with the V6 and have done the water pump myself, but I'm curious what doing a TB/Pump on the V8 is like in comparison.

How did you figure out which O2 sensor to change and any special tools required to change it? I have the same code right now.
Any decent code reader will let you scan the car and the OBD2 code will tell you which bank(side) and before or after the cat. No special tools were required, it was easy.

My 97 TLC has steel bumper not plastic. As long as you keep up with routine maintenance, TLC will last forever, if your car was in California, the body will still shine after 20 years.

One thing that’s incredibly annoying on these cars is the very large heavy inconvenient skid plate that covers the oil filter. If I purchased one I’d remove it and keep it off as it’s too much of an annoyance to have it especially if you plan to do maintenance yourself
If you don't plan to offroad I guess that makes sense. But otherwise I like having it for extra protection.
Not so difficult to change out without removing, at least on a 99. I've never had to remove it, though I did remove the small plate covering the oil pan drain, that one hasn't been back on for about 10years.

Recently I had to replaced the original alternator which came with the car in 2000. Had the timing belt done at the same time. Total cost was £400 supply, fit and serviced. Won’t have to think about for another twenty years.

With all due respect, if you bought it used, how do you know, "it's only needed routine maintenance?" When it was 4 or 8 years old, would know if the cam shaft position sensor or catalytic converter, or whatever was replaced?
Guy that details my vehicles, claims he used to manage a car wash. According to him, "Toyota/Lexus use the best paint in the auto industry. It's all mediocre, but Toyota is the best of them."

Fuel economy is on par with other similar vehicle. Don't know why it is always brought up in Land Cruiser review or LX or GX.
4.60-4.70 a gallon and he's complaining. In the UK we're paying nearly £5.50 for a gallon

Can’t agree with the no expensive repairs outside of standard maintenance… that’s just not true. Basically everything on this premium SUV is expensive to fix relative to their other Toyota cousins. And plenty of things can and do go wrong. Brake booster, power steering, catalytic system, sunroof leaks, all very common and expensive replacements.
Great cars but let down by rust prone chassis and components. If the chassis was galvanised or treated, these would be a great car.

Keep the cruiser sell the van. You can always find another van, a crusier whose history and condition you know is a rarer thing.

@@michaelmango8524 I’ve put purchase on hold. However, I now believe a Lexus Gx460 (Toyota Prada Landcruiser) is a better option - more availability and better prices.
100 series owner here. I've had mine for 10 years now and 120k miles. Currently at 225k miles. Overall, I think the 100 series is mostly hype about its robustness. Don't get me wrong, its a very fine vehicle and the drivetrain is reliable, but the saying of yeah, this car is made for 25 years service life is just beyond ridiculous.

Hmm, my 99 would say otherwise. It's about 23 years old now, and all it needs right now is a scheduled timing belt change.
Not sure what you're on about. I'd buy and trust your nearly 25 year old J100 at 225k. I wouldn't say the same for any Dodge/Jeep, ford, chevy, Nissan or Subaru even at half the same age and mileage. Hype is easy and cheap, but reputation is hard earned and valued. Perfect, no, but what else compares?

2005 LX470 owner here for the past 3 years, with 240k miles, I was offered 10k over the money I have into it, didn't sell it.
I sold an older one I had before (a 2000) and if regret killed I would be dead and that's why I bought the one I have now and not going to sell it.
Believe me you'll regret it as soon as it leaves.
Yes it's terrible on fuel, and test seat and steering wheel worn out, but if you consider other vehicles with this use...

If you're looking to save money on gas look somewhere else, this is far FAR from fuel economic :D
I work from home 3 days a week and from my house to work is 5 km each way, so realistically I only spend around $100/month on Gas so I don't care.
Honestly, mine, with 33 BF all-terrain does 16L/100 km in the city and 13L/100 km on the highway doing around 110 kmh.
But I had Mercedes S classes W220 and W221 and comfort-wise this (Lexus LX470) is as good if not better than those 2 vehicles.
On top of that to answer @ITZ JDUB I also have the rear entertainment system with 2 kids... forget it, it's a world-class vehicle no questions.
I am curious to know why this large and heavy 4x4 with long overhangs on both ends. Should take me to places no other 4x4 truck on same size tires shouldn't?
It may be fairly reliable( but thristy! ) ,roomy and good overall overlanding vehicle. But there is no doubt it is over hyped for it's off-road capabilities over other comparable 4x4.
