I've always been a big fan of Colin and his content since the days of IGN but this is the epitome of youtube/podcasting to me. So many content creators make fast, bullshit videos with frenetic editing and they typically seem to have a poor command of language. Last Stand is a perfect example of less is more. A few panels with genuinely interesting and insightful people offering their perspective in a unique and entertaining way. Makes you realise how important these channels are when there's so much shit that youtube pushes into your feed.
Really appreciated the grifter discussion. I felt like each of the three had a somewhat different angle to contribute to the conversation. It’s frustrating how little nuance there is in the gaming industry and how you’re either one extreme or the other. My same feelings with the “culture war” in general. Just a waste of time with no real arguments of substance, just rage bait.
So I’m listening to this after the weekend so it’s amazing to me how Dustin’s foresight is almost divinely. Maybe the same Angel in Trumps shoulder was at Dustin’s home as this podcast was being recorded. Does this mean that Chris Collin Dustin Ferman maybe the next coming?
The sleep problem could actually be sleep apnea. I used to wake up in the middle of the night to pee, but really it was because I wasn't breathing. Now that I use a CPAP, I never wake up to pee anymore. I sleep through the night.
@@TheMaestro116 Which is weird, because one of his favorite games of all time, Bioshock, has a history so rooted in PC gaming. Until the PS2, and really mainly the PS3 came out, consoles got truly inferior ports of PC games. I would say modern 3D console gaming owes just about everything to PC games of the 1990s and early 2000s
Interesting to hear that I'm not the only one who plays games based on the season, when Chris talked about a game being "An October game." I do that all the time. I tend to play all of my RPGs during the summer, because(and Colin can probably appreciate this being a football fan) when football season starts, so much of my attention is focused on that, I don't like to play games that rack up a ton of playing time and require a ton of attention. So I try to play those during the summer and then come September, I focus on shorter, simpler games that I can play in shorter spurts. The last thing I want to do when my time is more limited during the week is to pop on a game that has me spending half of that limited time reading text opposed to pure gameplay moments.
The AI write-in about Bethesda procedurally generating terrain is completely insane and shows they don't know anything about game development. AI and procedural generation are completely different technologies, and only one of them uses other artists' work without consent.
Correction- What dustin mentioned about GamePass tiers is mostly correct, but he mistaken the new normal GamePass tier for the old version. GamePass Standard gives you the bulk of GamePass games with no day1 access, but does give you MP online. They essentially traded day1 access for inclusion of MP online
Holy shit, out of all people I never expected Chris to be the first person I heard talk about how bad XDefiant’s level design is. It struck me immediately when playing the game how poorly of a job the artists did designing the pathing and deciding how to draw the player’s eyes to the right places. The crashed plane map is probably the most egregious example. Just a bunch of brightly colored trash randomly scattered around the space with no concern for the flow of the level or drawing attention to the wrong places. Another map on a bridge has the worst clean zones (i.e. the part of walls players will contrast with) I’ve seen in a game because the tops of the walls have bright green plants with hanging vines that mess up the visibility. That same map has random foot high benches placed in the middle of paths for no fucking reason as well. I remember being hearing nothing but great things about the maps before playing so it shock to see how bad they were.
Xbox and their moves is such an abomination to the industry. And you can't even make an argument that its no big deal cause they still put out great games......They haven't put out shit for 1st party and this gen is at the mid point already. So hilarious
GTA keeps selling bc there's always a new crop of players along with popular channels that give them tips and tricks. I think the secret to live service games is not necessarily keeping players coming back, but always having new players coming in. GTA Online is the perfect game for this. Some new kid is going to grow up eventually and want to start his empire in GTA online. He can do it with buddies or the online community. Rockstar as a company have dedicated all their resources to their top tier titles. Not many companies including Sony have that luxury. The only popular title they have imo is God of War. I think they can make money with a new version of Home. I can imagine it being like a social media game type service. You can have people create their space and do some meet ups where they can race, play pool, bowling, or battle. I'm surprised they don't try to bring it back. They can definitely make money selling stuff. Would that require a lot of resources like GTA online is the question. I know I would want to use something like that. I still log in to GTA Online today just to buy and drive around with the cars I own.
If AI can maintain quality of games and have developments go from 5+ years to 2-3 like during the 7th generation is ok with me. We got 3 Mass Effect games in 5 years, entire series would start and finish in a single generation. COD 4 Modern Warfare (just one of the biggest multiplayer shooters ever made) was developed by 100 people in 2 years. If graphics are what's causing games to take so long to be made, then maybe AI can assist with that.
Colin, please play Disco Elysium. Everything you're saying you like about Pentiment is also in Disco. No combat. Just talking to people, and making choices.
I'm stoked to see Jeanne D'arc added to PSN. It was one of my absolute favorites on the PSP and over the years it kept running circles in my head to the degree that I paid stupid money for an imported physical copy. Will still be the easiest double dip of my life tho
The right-wing grifter segment is 100% on point. I really liked the idea of people who aren't in the gaming industry anymore, coming back and making their own content without corporate, left leaning infrastructure. Melonie Mac did that, and I was supportive. Cut forward three or so short years, and she has gone completely off the fucking rocker. It was really unfortunate to see happen in real time because things don't have to be the way they are.
Melonie Mac ditched all her friends and started her right wing plunge once her career was starting to stagnant and die.Her numbers started to decline and she decided to make the pivot to making more "right wing" content. Friends of hers have been on record talking about her switch. The timing was obvious to people paying attention. You say she went "completely off the fucking rocker" but honestly. it's a grift from the start. They slowly go from left to right and get more extreme over time because that's the only way to maintain relevancy once they alienate their original audience completely. Plus, they can't just completely transition . They have to make it seem "natural" Like they're being "woken up" to reality. It's how people like that get accepted into the right because otherwise even people like her will be called a grifter by the people she's trying to appeal to. I rambled but yeah. Her schtick is obvious. It's what the Dave Rubin's of the world and Tim Pools of the world have done as well. Same with Joe Rogan. It's lucrative to appeal to the right on RUclips and social media. People that pretend otherwise are lying. These people are making bank by exploiting people but people don't want to hear it because they like what they hear being said back to them.
You gotta ask though, why do they get more popular if they right wing grift? Probably because there's a group of people who are being under served by everything coming out of California.
@@skeetsofrage9517 I mean. it's true lol, sorry if the facts hurts your feelings. Like Ben Shapiro. He grew up with parents who worked in Hollywood in well paying jobs. He went to Harvard. Why do you think to this day he's trying to make movies? He has his production company now and tried to make a movie with the actress from The Mandolorian but the movie bombed. He's bitter that he didn't make it in Hollywood. Alex Jones literally in court when his wife was divorcing him and he was battling for joint custody of his kids said he's only playing a character on his show and that he doesn't believe everything he says.
