I took this cheapest MacBook and upgraded it!
ruclips.net/video/LDP4Cu-sByo/видео.html
it runs faster on catalina :P
where can i find one
@@shineonmalawi9465 i got mine at a pawn shop for 80$
So we are in 2023 March I want a macbook on a budget.
I need your advice
What i missed most about those old MacBooks, is the apple logo lighting up. “Apple bring it back”
Apple logo light effects screen
They removed it because sometimes it was reflected on the screen and it was really annoying
why? whats the purpose of it?
@@shazmimain8293 They implemented it for the first time on the powerbook g3 only for aesthetic purposes and as it became an iconic symbol of apple laptops they continued to produce it until 2015, when it was eliminated. The reason was because it was annoying, since being transparent, all the external light passed through to the screen from behind, making it not be seen correctly

This thing's pretty nice. I gave my dad my 11 inch mid-2013 with 4GB RAM since I upgraded to an M1 Air and he loves it, way better than any computer he's ever had
Very nice! I was surprised at how much I enjoyed using this laptop and how much usable power it had for simple everyday things.
@@TheEverydayDad are all in this USA are so poor? In EU we don’t have issues to buy a new one M1 MacBook. What is wrong with your so call capitalists heaven ? Change this place or leave it! Come to EU and you will find out that you are living actually in 3rd world country 😢
@@balabhadradas1710 listen man, I’m an anti-capitalist American but you just sound like a pretentious douche. The working class in the U.S. don’t have control of their socioeconomic status, and anyone who actually cared would understand that the U.S. people are victims of a system that they have 0 control over.
@@balabhadradas1710 I lived in the Germany and know for a fact that there are very poor people in the EU. I think you need to expand your circle. There are a lot of poor people in the EU.
Also, in the USA (in most places) you can’t just walk down the street to the bakery or the grocery store. The distances between points are very far and it’s not uncommon for someone living in the rural USA to drive 30-50k miles a year. 50-70,000 KM per year.
What would it do to your household budget if you had to buy the fuel to drive 50-70,000 KM per year?
@@balabhadradas1710 wtf are you talking about , even people who work 30 hours a week can easily buy a macbook but not every one wants to spend half their income on a laptop
I bought the exact same model from Back Market recently it’s basically brand new for $98 and only has 112 battery charge cycles I’m so happy
Great Deal
Congrats!
I bought this recently for $129. It's not a bad travel companion. I upgraded the SSG to 250GB & it has 8GB of memory. I also updated the OS to Ventura via Open Core Legacy Patcher. For what I need it for, it's not a bad purchase
I owned one of these a few years ago. Can’t remember the year but it was shockingly good for the money, only paid a few hundred quid. I also love and miss the wedge design of the air. Still a great laptop to this day.
It would be very interesting to see a comparison between this MacBook Air and a used budget iPad like the iPad 7th generation. Both products are meant to do the basics, but both have different ways of doing it with advantages and disadvantages.
Might have to do that, thanks for the suggestion!
My day-to-day Mac until recently was the last iteration of that old design with wide silver bezel, except 13-inch version, from 2017. It runs latest MacOS (Monterey) well and never felt slow to me for doing the things I do on a Mac… Until I started using my M1 MacBook. Now it feels somewhat slow in comparison, and its not-Retina screen doesn’t look as good. But it’s still very usable; I like the old-school USB ports, TB2/DisplayPort, MagSafe, plus SD card slot. I plan to do what you demonstrated… Connect to a large display and use it as a desktop Mac most of the time. So thanks for showing that your older model does fine with everyday tasks.
I️m still using a 2013 11.6 inch i7 8gb, works great still
I got myself an 11” inch MacBook Air 2015 with 8GB RAM and 256GB ssd in 2018 for $450 on eBay (nowadays you can still get them for around $250-300). Still using it now in 2022 for basic task like web browsing, music, content consumption, document editing and light gaming on Steam. Those things are awesome (it can run Monterey - sadly that’ll be the last supported MacOS version). Battery down to 80% capacity but I think I will replace the battery and it would give at least 2-3 more years of use out of it.
I had this exact model but with 8GB of memory. It really was a champ and ran great. I ultimately sold it to get a '2020 MacBook Air so I could run Windows apps with Parallels, but that little old Air was a fine machine.
This laptop is arguably better than most chrome books
That's a good point I hadn't though of. It costs roughly as much as a chrome book but can do so much more.
It's not even a debate, personally i like a couple of apps in the background such as airbuddy and Lulu and magnet and those things aren't allowed on a Chromebook. The MacBook may be old but I bet if an SSD was added it would be 10x better
𝑻𝒓𝒖𝒆 𝒎𝒚 𝒈𝒖𝒚💚💚💚
Is it just me or the webcam looks absolutely amazing? Like even better than most of today's laptops. I thought it was the camera you regularly use for a sec.
Right? I think the webcam turned out amazing!
My wife still uses her 6gb RAM version of this air to this day. We bought it new in box from best Buy back in 2015 and she is still kicking. Macbook longevity was the exact reason we decided to invest in one versus getting a cheaper Windows computer that may have been more capable at the time.
My wife used to have this exact little laptop until I bought her an M1 MBA and got her to upgrade. But that old MBA was a champ. It fit in her purse and could do all the normal office work and web browsing.
She used to Lightroom on it too and that was a struggle. And edit our church videos which would take 12 hours to render a 1 hour sermon.
If Apple ever brings back the 11” MBA with Apple Silicon I think it would be a huge hit. Although an M1 iPad Air would work too if you could just run MacOS on it.
I would immediately buy an 11 inch MacBook Air with the m1 chip inside of it.
@@TheEverydayDad Yeah even if it were a cut down 6 core chip, it would still be phenomenal
Thanks for uploading this. I was agonizing over a new m2 air vs a base 14” m1 pro, since their costs are so close once you spec up the m2. This video made me reevaluate. Going for a refurbished base model m1 air for a third of the price, and honestly even that may be overkill. Thanks again
I use a 13" M1 Air and love it. What an amazing machine. But I also still have and use my i5 mid-2012 Mac mini (8GB + SSD upgrade) as my desktop computer. Of late I mainly use it as a dual-boot Linux machine with Linux Mint running most days because pretty much everything runs so smoothly and it's better with RAM. That said, I can and do boot MacOS on it whenever I need to run Mac-only software. I even use Windows on it, in VirtualBox, to run TurboTax (Windows only app). Really great how well a 10-year old device can still get a lot of useful things done. 👍
I recently revived my mid-2011 macbook air, I ended up completely wiping it and installing a chrome OS. It works so much faster and better now and has its whole new life cycle to live as a chromebook.
just a tip: whenever you have notifications on a MacBook you don't have to click the X, you can simply use two fingers and swipe right when the cursor is on the bubble.
My Mac laptop is a mid-2012 MacBook Pro, which I believe was the last fully upgradeable MBP (so I fully upgraded it 😁). The display isn't a nice as the MB Air but otherwise it does the job for me nicely.
If it works that’s all that matters!
@Ramin Omar Yep, that's it.
I bought a 2012 Macbok Pro with an I5 intel core and a 1 terabyte for storage all for under 500$. I love it and I’m going to be using it for school. The Apple logo lighting up on the back is one of my favorite parts about it
Bought MacBook Pro 15" 2015 grade B+(almost mint),16gb RAM,battery cycle count 400 with discrete GPU for $400 on eBay.
You overpaid.
I noticed the FPS on an external display can come down to the adapter.
On my M1 MBP I got 4k 30fps using a bog standard adapter, but 4k 60fps using a Thunderbolt (USB-C) to DisplayPort cable. That said, the specs page for that MacBook Air doesn't say what FPS you can use, I guess it is 24fps.
My 2013 11” MBA can do 60 fps, I think it was either his adapter or just a compatibility issue with his huge monitor.
Its probably the resolution of his monitor, back in 2013-2014 4k30 was hard for computers to push out, much less 4k60, 1080p60-1080p75 was the norm, if you want to use this older mba with an external monitor, that'd be the way to go, a 1080p monitor
The keyboards on those pre-Retina MBAs are amazing! Best laptop keyboard I’ve ever used.
I got a 2017 MacBook air 256gb for $200 on the Facebook market place. Great laptop for music production. He was asking for $300 but I talked him down. It was a deal
Installed Sonoma on mine with 8GB and 512GB SSD that I found for $200 with a slight dent near the USB port. 95% battery health, no shine on the keyboard or discoloration of the display.
You just inspired me to get one for work! I just need it for the basics and it will fit perfectly in my bag.
I bought an early 2015 13inch MacBook Air with 8gb ram for just 135$ but i know amazon is a bit safer for buyers that don't know much about laptop. but i'm sure you could find it even cheaper. you just have to read the description and ask question regarding the Macs condition and also check the rating of the seller.
Honestly really miss those 11 inch model MacBooks. I'm out a lot so I'd love to have the most compact workhorse I can get. Wish they would bring it back with today's Apple upgrades. I would totally buy a M2 version of an 11 inch Air.
Also loving the longevity of a MacBook in general. If this were any other laptop I'd imagine it'd be dead a couple years ago.
you should try the surface laptop go if your ok with windows. It shares a lot of similarities to the 11 inch macbook, and is nifty
I’m still rocking with my 2014 MacBook Pro Retina!
I just bought a Mid 2012 MacBook Air for $30 from my local goodwill! It works flawlessly after some fine tuning and I’m going to replace the battery and fix up the thermals later this week!
First time watching your videos, I like you talk fast and no bs. Good job 👍
I had this laptop for my first year of college and I swear every time I opened it the thing was dead, recently upgraded to a 2019 air and the difference is huge!
I’m to the point where I use my iPad Pro much more than my Mac. So I’d rather spend more money on my iPad than my Mac. About 4 months ago I purchased a 2015 11’ MacBook Air and couldn’t be happier.
Interesting I’m the polar opposite! I have a nice MacBook and now thinking about getting the cheapest ipad. No need to get both in the top of the line configuration, right? If I need the nice camera I’ve got it on my iPhone and if I need the processing power, I’ll just use my macbook.
I was using the 14 inch 2014 MacBook Air until I bought a refurbished M1 Air last September. Apart from the battery life it did me well.
i have a macbook air 2015 which i bought not even a year ago for 150 dollars, works great, im on the latest mac os monterrey and its been keeping up with the browsing, youtube, and school work just fine. if you care for video editing then you might wanna upgrade but regular 1080p video renders just fine, no problems there. some supported games also run pretty well too but dont expect to play any new titles on this laptop. for what its worth, its a very good computer. i'm still getting updates
24Hz 2560x1600 isn‘t a limitation of Thunderbolt 1, it‘s rather a limitation of your existing cable/adapter. I used a iMac 2010 with the old displayport (not even thunderbolt) and I got full 1440p with 60Hz.
This MacBook Air should at least do 4K/30Hz
Am I the only one who read Under Muff Line on the t-shirt ?
I purchased a Mac Air early 2014 with 8 GB, i7 1.7 processor, and 256 SSD storage. It still goes to work everyday.
I use a 2012 MacBook Pro and I hacked it to run MacOS Monterey 12.4 and I love it because it has a bunch of ports that current MacBooks lack and also on top of that it has a DVD drive.
I took your advice and bought the 2020 MacBook Air with the M1 Chip for a sale price on Amazon for new of $749 before taxes. I want you to know that I am very pleased with my purchase. I bought a case for it right away and a fan mat for my lap. I thought it would help it stay cool. But now I have to purchase a hub for it as the fan can't connect since it doesn't have one of those portals on it. On my Asus Chromebook, it works great since that Chromebook gets very hot even with fans. Not all the time but when I'm on it for 6 or more hours. I was able to put my VPN and antivirus software on it without too much trouble. The battery life is amazing. I charge my Asus a couple of times when I'm up and working on it. I treat it so carefully to make sure the battery is taken care of. I have to get used to the Apple ecosystem. Thank you again for your information regarding the 2020 MacBook Air M1 chip!
I bought myself a 2017 MacBook Pro from BackMarket for like $500. While it's a few years old I love it
I just upgraded from a mid 2013 MacBook Air to a late 2020 MacBook Air m1 and I still love my 2013 model my kids use it for Roblox and simple school work and it works for them if my 2013 could run Monterey with out a patch I would not have upgraded
I got my 2015 MacBook Air last year and it looks brand new, runs Monterey great, and I love it.
Oh my goodness 🤣 I'm sorry but I'm laughing right off the bat... the prices comparison are hilarious... the MacBook Pro 16" to a house mortgage and the base model MacBook Air to a car payment is 😂 How about the Macbook Pro 13" and 14"?
Recently scored an eBay auction for a 2015 MacBook Air for only $80.
I’ve only just upgraded to an M1 Air from a 2013 MacBook Pro. It was solid and still worked well, just a degrading battery let it down
This one has a ton of battery cycles on it and I’ll probably do an upgrade video where we swap out the battery for that very reason.
Good thing apple lets you swap out old batteries!!!
Thoroughly enjoyed this review! I’ve done Final Cut Pro and Premiere Pro editing and exports using 11.6” MBA and 12” MBr without too many problems. Final Cut Pro is far more optimised though. Subscribed 🍻
Should have bought thunderbolt 1 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter to connect the entire "battle station"
i bought a Mbp 2017(16gb, i5) for 250 on Sendico, i just had to replace the Battery and Ssd and Install Ventura, now it works really great :)
I installed mac is Monterey on mines and I'm getting ready to install mac os Ventura
This is literally the computer I got from my school
bro ur so lucky…
Amazon is so crazy, i ordered a Raspberry pi 8GB. I payed £75 for the pi however when it arrived they sent a Spanish book which when i looked it up online the book was worth £340. I had let amazon know they sent the wrong item then refunded me and let me keep the book. made a perfect profit that day
I have just come into the possession of the same Macbook.
Try to get power on however think I need new adapter to start. Let's see 😀
I upgraded my macbook air 2013 to big sur with no problem
My 9 & 10 yr old still use my 2012 MacBook Air…. Tackles all basic things well.
Nice!
Can’t imagine an iPad today can be larger than a laptop back then.
I still have the same one I have, my sister uses it and it’s actually fast(no joke), does everything u need and still works for 8 years
Battery life again is really bad but for its time and life it would last a hour and a half
This is the computer I still use. It’s so slow 🥴 I feel like I can barely do anything on it, I basically only pull it out if I need to do something that can’t be done on my iPad
I’m thinking about getting a Mac. My windows laptop is already unusable after 3 months of owning it😓
I recently bought a renewed MacBook Air from Amazon. It should arrive this weekend. We’ll see how well it works.
Nice! Hope you enjoy it when it comes in!
In theory it should be a 2017 version. I paid around $300 after taxes.
@@TheEverydayDad It arrived today. It looks good. It was as advertised. I upgraded it to Monterey. Seems to be functioning fine right now. The charger is marked up, but it is an Apple charger. It is a 2017 with 8GB RAM and 128 SSD.
How the hell did you buy the exact same 2014 11 inch MacBook that I just bought as well!!!??? 😂
And I also bought it like less than two weeks ago. Damn, what a super surprise to see how it works and performs before I use it!
I like this one because it runs my personal favorite os (Mavericks) and macOS 11, so you can get the oldest and newest software and os for a mac
I wish that apple would still sell and 11 inch MacBook Air, that would be the go to laptop for me
The way I see it is, ONE mortgage payment will give you years worth of return and productivity.
Gee you probably got my old one..lol. loved the video
what boom arm is that? looks sick!
I run 2015 MacBook Air and it’s the best thing ever, especially when corporate clients require you to use VDI
Does that run better on X86? I've never used that.
@@TheEverydayDad think Intel® Core™ i5-5250U is 64 bit? I’ve got an 2011 iMac and it’s miles ahead - starts nearly instantaneously and no lag. Sure, I have to wait a second or two for an app like Numbers to start but anyone who used a Windows laptop would appreciate how much faster it is. Also still supports the latest macOS.
Now you need to do the same thing with an older iMAC!
Might need to do just that!
New series?????
I'm actually using a Macbook Air 2017, and it's still good for work. But I'm eyeing the new Air or the entry level Pro
I have an M1, but also have a MBA 2017, which has Parallels running on it so that I can use PC-only software. Does it really well. MBAs are excellent computers! 😊👍
Hi Gary ! Are you selling the upgrade version on the refurbished products you by?
That mag safe looked pretty average to me 👀
I just bought a macbook pro 13” Late 2013 with 8gb/128gb for only $280, i got it cheap bc the speakers are crackling but its not that much of an issue since i always use my sony buds with it. I used OCLP to upgrade to Monterey 12.4 for the sake of universal control and its running smoothly and i dont experience lags since i basically just use it for browsing, meetings, school, and microsoft apps.
I was thinking of this exact setup for writing on the go. $200. What I would love though a m1 11” , in case apple is listening.
I think the 11 inch MacBook Air is so darn cute. too bad they don't make it anymore
I just picked up one for portability. My 15 in retina is too bulky to carry around
I bought a 13 inch unibody MacBook Pro 2010 2.66ghz for $135. And a 15 inch 2009 2.8ghz for $120. These are much better deals and seem to be fairly repeatable.(especially the 2010) for the $180 or less you can probably get a 2012 unibody 13 inch MacBook Pro.
Those MacBooks aren't really that good anymore as they cant be updated to big sur or even Catalina or Mojave natively (the average person wont know how to patch it) The MacBook Air is newer, thin and light and more modern looking and faster. Sure the 2009 and 10 macbook pros might have higher GHz but the i5 in the MBA would outperform it due to having 4 threads.
I have the M1 MacBook Pro and I think the butterfly keyboard is great idky people hate it soo much
had this one before my m1 mac, worked well but man that fan was loud lol
Gary....Just Wondering what you use the Scarlett for?
I am pretty sure my last MacBook was a 2013 or 2014 MacBook Air and it was bricked by big sur haha I was so nervous for you
with 4gb ram i definitely wouldn’t go past mojave,, the plus tho is that it’s the last version that can run 32 bit apps!
That is really cool.. awesome Apple still updates products that old, very cool. ( this would be just what I need.)
The camera looks awesome
This is really strange, but I did this exact thing over the past weekend... and then saw you do the same thing after the fact. Gotta say though that for $3 more you could have had a 2015 MBA 11 that is supported by macOS Monterey. That price was on Newegg, though. I'd argue that the 2015 MBA 11 is a much better deal given the bump to 5th gen Core processors and graphics. You ought to try doing a video edit with it to really put it through its paces.
Could you link smthing?
really trying to see if this model will allow for some video editing
What happen when Apple not support upgrade the Macbook?
Do you think there’s any cheap older MacBooks capable of running sims 4 + expansion packs? :)
I love my 11 inch mb air!
This was my favorite apple product ever! I wish they would bring back a similar form factor
Would you buy it over an iPad 7/8/9 for example???
why do you think that the external display can't run it more than 24 FPS
I clicked on this video because of the face expression in the thumbnail 🤪
I have a question, I am new at RUclips I use a GoPro 8 and a mavic air 2 drone in my videos.. on luma fusion
Will this computer work for editing my RUclips channel videos..
(Apple MacBook Pro 13.3-Inch Laptop with Retina Display, Intel Core i7 3.1GHz, 512GB Flash Storage, 16GB DDR3 Memory (Renewed)Apple MacBook Pro) . Right now I use a iPad Pro A1701 I believe it a 2017 model with 256 memory
I still have a 2012 11 inch Air. I use it when I need to do work in a place where my newish M1 might get bashed about.
It still runs pretty well all things considered. (Battery life is awful)
Yeah I think I'm going to upgrade the battery on this model to help with its life, its got a ton of cycles on it already.
@@TheEverydayDad Good idea. I want to do the same, but still undecided if I actually need to. It will do an hour or so off charger, which hasn’t caused me too many awkward moments. Compared to my M1 Air though, it is just unfair :-)

The 11” MacBook Air is a lovely laptop
I’ve really enjoyed this one so far.
I spent an extra $50 on backmarket and got me a 2015 13" MBP base with 16gbs ram and play games like Hell Let Loose and Hunt Showdown on max graphics 70-100fps with GFN
very cheap in your country, My neighbor bought used macbook 2014 for 380 dollar but it look like new. I also compared the price of amazon used macbook to our OL shopping here in Philippines but the prices gap is huges. Lazada and Shopee almost the same price for that 2014 macbook. 350-380 dollar.
If u have no money at all and you need some apple apps or features, good, if not... i dont really think is worth, but still, 200 bucks for it, cannot expect the m1 ultra performance nice video!
Or you could've booted into internet recovery mode and it would automatically install the most updated compatible macOS
Ok, but Dunder Mifflin cameo ❤️
2500 mortgage and 1000 car payment lol
I also got a 11" i7 air 8G RAM 125 2012 from my friend, it is nice to use as a 2nd mac install catalina not bad.
Oh nice! How does the i7 hold up in such a small laptop body?
@@TheEverydayDad it si very hot (vs i5 version), the fan alway run in full speed (I need to use Macfan to slow download a little bit)
Makes sense, I would love to see an M1 in a shell this size, bet it would be really good thermally.
