  • How To Mark Spiral, Parallel, and Perpendicular Lines on Pipe or Cylinders
    I go over a few of the methods that I use to accurately mark on pipe, conduit, tubing, or anything cylindrical. There may be other methods for the same tasks, but these are quick and effective. I hope it helps you on your next cylindrical project.

    Proper job, thanks. I'm guessing it's easier to make distance markings on the paper too before putting it on the tube, if you need them; than making the line and then trying to measure distances along that line.

    • @Makebuildmodify

      I've never had to do it. But I would try to find a larger piece of paper and follow the same steps.

  • @tomt9543
    @tomt9543 3 года назад

    I’m just imagining how big of a piece of paper it took to paint the spiral on the Cape Hatteras, NC lighthouse! Ha! Seriously, that’s a subject I’ve wondered how they did for years! And it’s tapered, not parallel sides! On another note, welding supply stores sell “Wrap Arounds”, which is a rolled up 4 inch x long price of cardstock like material, heat resistant of course, that welders use to layout cuts on pipe similar to your paper method. Kind of like the framing square of the pipe welding world, it has markings on it to layout angles (other than just 90 degrees) and saddles etc. Very good vid!

    • @Makebuildmodify
      @Makebuildmodify  3 года назад

      A huge tapered spiral like the would be a go candidate for parallel line development. Old school, but effective. You could draw a scaled representation and then plot the spiral on the building.

    • @Makebuildmodify

      That wrapping layout tool sounds fantastic!

      Good question. I've never had the need to do so.

  • @megafusrodah
    @megafusrodah 3 года назад +1

    For the double length spiral wouldnt taping the end of the triangle and then the straight egde work as well? Same principle but wont have to do the 2nd cut, start the spiral then untape the straight edge, finish the spiral w the point taped down

    • @megafusrodah
      @megafusrodah 3 года назад

      Also using the speed square would work for the perpendicular lines. Set the speed square on the top side and use a notch/ inner line and roll the tube

    • @Makebuildmodify
      @Makebuildmodify  3 года назад

      If you use the tip of the triangle first it will still overlap itself. (I just tested it)

    • @Makebuildmodify
      @Makebuildmodify  3 года назад +2

      That might work, but you would have to keep the tube from shifting laterally while you rolled it. Tough to do, but not impossible.

  • @utubepunk

    Very helpful. I need an uber straight perpendicular line on a PVC pipe with uneven ends that's 9 inches in diameter. Any ideas? Just tape a couple of 8½ X 11 inch paper together & use the same method as shown? 🤔

    • @Makebuildmodify
      @Makebuildmodify  2 года назад +1

      Maybe use some poster board or a large piece of art paper. Any square and flexible sheet stock will work.
