I can't believe that Jimmy Page and I were practically in the same town that day. My dad lived in Suffern, NY where I visited him each summer. To know that I was probably a 12 minute walk from the guy who inspired me on many levels blows me away almost 30 years later.

@@5eviexe466 Les Paul didn't design the Les Paul guitar, he simply endorsed it. It was designed by Tim McCarty and team at Gibson. Les Paul provided some input, that's it. Leo Fender tried to get Les Paul to endorse the Telecaster before Gibson came out with the guitar we know as the Les Paul, but Les already had a long relationship with Gibson and declined Leo's offer. Otherwise, we might today know the Telecaster as the Les Paul. Know what you are talking about before you start talking.

This was great. People always bag on the Live Aid appearance, (yeah Page, Jones, Plant bag on it too) but I still stand by it. Like many moments in our lives, it was that moment in time, and when looked back on, maybe not up to par. But at that time, the energy was incredible!! And while there were rough parts, there were brilliant parts as well----Robert looking over at Jimmy when he starts Stairway, and in the beginning when Robert yells "Good Evenin!, and Jimmy leans over and it looks like he says "do it again", and Robert screams out "I said Good Evening!!" so awesome. So after watching 20 hours of bands playing both shows of Live Aid all day and night, having Page Plant and Jones come on was a real dose of Rock---in contrast to all the pop that had been played (which was good). Priest and Sabbath had put down some excellent rock as well, and we all know Queen ripped it up at Wembley, but I still stand with the Zep set, warts and all! cheers!

It seems that this functional metal plate was the birth of the B-Bender tremolo device on the future factory Telecasters. That thing is probably worth a mint by now and not "just because" Jimmy Paige played it but because it was the beginning of a new innovation at Fender for a tremolo "like" device for the Telecaster other than the Bigsby.

In the words of clarence white, "if I wanted it to sound like pedal steel guitar, I'd play pedal steel guitar!" Great guitar player that was on the verge of being a household name. Bernie Leadon really popularized it on all those eagles songs. Peaceful Easy Feeling, Tequila Sunrise, Lyin Eyes, etc. Another name jimmy casually mentions is "sneaky" pete kleinow , a true pioneer in bringing pedal steel into rock, and influenced the playing of buddy cage and jerry garcia. Absolutely great stuff

Couldn't help it. One of my favorite songs! I can usually look at a pic, and what he was wearing from any period, and tell you where it was. Of course, that was harder when he was wearing the same two or three things in the later Zep years. (btw, even though he's playing a Gibson in the video, i have a sneaking feeling he's actually using that B bender on the recording of Satisfaction Guaranteed)

This one - it's just perfect isn't it? 1959, you know, you can just listen how much sustain, just listen a minute...the sustain, listen to it. Well you would hear it if it were playing but it's really famous for its sustain I mean you can just hold it and go and have a bite and aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, you'd still be hearing that one.

Well, Clarence White kind of invented it with Gene Parsons in the late 60s and played on several Byrds albums from that time, so 85 is a couple of years further.

I grew up on Zeppelin and other big names in rock but I've discovered Clarence White about a year or two ago and am just blown away by this dude's playing - the byrds, nashville west, etc. Under appreciated master

Recorded "shortly after the Led Zeppelin reunion". What asshole thinks Led Zeppelin reunited? Tell it to John Bonham's grave, ok? The surviving members of Led Zeppelin have said repeatedly, for decades now, that the band ceased to be after Bonham's death. Led Zeppelin has never reunited and can not because their drummer is dead...
