- Grace Bumbry gives a masterclass at Salzburg's Mozarteum. A dear friend sent this clip to me roughly 14 years ago. Unfortunately, I don't have the date of this class, but these are highlights from the masterclass. This masterclass clip is an extract from a broader documentary on Bumbry. She sings a bit from Signore ascolta from Turandot, Laura's arietta from La Gioconda, and Suicidio (from the CD Beruhmte Opernarien). *I guess this was filmed in the early 2000s, perhaps around 2002/2003. Jonathan Morris who was Bumbry's accompanist for many years is at the piano.

This girl in green white shirt with a long hair who stands in front of a door is me......😊😊😊 as a student...long time ago...and a blond girl who sings is Nelly Saffinova from Prag....it was filmed 1993 or 1995 or 1996
Okay, she demonstrates a pianissimo high B flat out of nowhere without being warmed up-and not even in her repertoire. There’s a lot to be said about just having a world class voice!❤
WOW Bumbry as Liu❤
This is warm and fabulously fuzzy. A clip gem.
"If you sing it properly at Gate Number One..." What a fabulous teacher! (Then out of nowhere, she just breaks into German. Ausgezeichnet!) This is delightful.
This is wonderful, I would love to see the entire piece! Brava La Bumbry!
Thank you I think I was in the room as guest to hear the masterclass. It was each year just amazing specially with Jonathan Morris ! It was just amazing ! Thank you !
Meravigliosa!
Brilliant. Than you for posting this clip.
Her marks are straigth to the point and she was in splendid voice here as well. The high B - flat pppppp on Milanov's level. Quite impressive for dramatic soprano.
Tremendous artist!
She is very clear and precise. I like her Liù, she should have recorded it. I think she could have done also Suor Angelica.
The closest sample I have to Puccini aside from Turandot and Tosca is a recording of her and Jonathan Morris (at the piano) in a recital singing In quelle trine morbide. The Bumbry of the 1970s could sing ANYTHING. She was brillant during that entire decade. I would have loved to hear her sing Ariadne. Even if just on a studio recording.
What is the second aria that she is singing
Are there other masterclasses from Salzburg ? This one is in the Oktogon- I remember well . Myself I have some recordings from the masterclass I sung with Prof. Richard Miller in the Liedertafel the old Mozarteum. I will try to make some copies in digital for Internet. It is very interesting!
This is the only class I have access to. The other masterclass I have of Bumbry was at the Juilliard School in NYC in 2003. It was not nearly as interesting as this one, though, which is why I've never posted it.
@@courtneybaritone0136 I hope that one day students from her will put some videos from Mozarteum with Jonathan in you tube. It was a great time. I was in the first Masterclass she gived 1987 with Jonathan and all years later.
Please, post it!!!!
