Born and raised in Utah i can agree. More than most religions they actually help a lot of people. You ever out of gas somewhere while travelling, seek out the local mormon church, theyll literally fill your tank and send you on your way....still they are just another religious control group. I think most buy into religion are miserable and want a reward for their suffering here.
Agreed. I'm an atheist and I greatly ADMIRE the theoretical mormon lifestyle. It's a religion that teaches its followers to eat healthy, to be fiscally responsible, to love and cherish your family second only to god, etc. If I ever became a theist, I'd convert to mormonism. However, it's more likely I'll genuinely believe the Earth is flat before I believe in the existence of any deity. Still, mormons have my respect & admiration. They're the best of the christians.
When I first saw this clip, I flew out to Utah from California to meet my (at the time) girlfriend’s parents. Suffice to say, Richard Dawkin’s take on Mormonism made me glad I never ended up joining a cult to marry a girl I was enamored with. In the long run, I am way better off without her.
I was a true believer until a few years ago, but things like the book of Abraham issues and other issues like polyandry (admitted in the church produced gospel topics essays) and whatnot that really contradicted what I thought the church/prophets were about really undermined my faith in the church. More than anything though, when I looked into other religions experiences with the "Holy Ghost", it becomes clear that it is a completely unreliable method of finding the truth, so it appears impossible to rely on my spiritual experiences to determine whether Mormonism is true. My wife and I stopped being active a few years ago-it was actually really rough leaving the church as it was a pretty tight community... But now things are a lot better and it's so nice to actually have a day of rest on Sunday!
@@itWouldBeWise Polyandry isn't much of an issue, since the Church in the early days practiced "sealings" only that were just that - sealings, not actual physical earthly marriages. Joseph was only sealed to other men's wives when the husband would approve, and wasn't sealed to his wife. Usually these men weren't Latter-Day Saints and didn't believe in in the power of being sealed, so the wives would request Joseph to have them sealed to him. Book of Abraham really isn't a problem, here's some good faithful and factual explanations: www.conflictofjustice.com/answers-book-of-abraham-questions/ . Holy Ghost: Yes, it can come as unreliable because others from other religions may have similar experiences. God doesn't just speak to Lattery-Day Saints, and every religion has bits and parts of truth and many strive to seek after God. Now for the testing of the Book of Mormon: there are many deceitful spirits that can confuse people. These spirits can be distinguished if they are from God or not. So, if you follow the Bible, these verses should clear it up. 1 John 4:1-3 1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. Read the 2nd verse again. The Book of Mormon confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh many times throughout the book: Alma 7:12-13 12 And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities. 13 Now the Spirit knoweth all things; nevertheless the Son of God suffereth according to the flesh that he might take upon him the sins of his people, that he might blot out their transgressions according to the power of his deliverance; and now behold, this is the testimony which is in me. Ether 3:9 Moroni 10:33 Mosiah 7:27 Among many more.
@@markbaker8849 A decent summary of what appears to be reality, but having previously believed in a "sky fairae" I can also tell you that would be a totally ineffective way of communicating anything of value to anyone except those who agree with you (although it may make you feel good about yourself as you see the "others" as apparently stupid - because why would you believe in a "sky fairae" after all)? My post was to share what I experienced and why I came to the conclusion that "there is no sky fairae", as you put it, even though at one point I did believe in one. I believe being dismissive of people's sincere beliefs misses an underlying reality that we're all basically hardwired to have very strong biases when it comes to our beliefs insomuch as they get wrapped up in our identity and/or tribe - whether religion, politics, bowling league, whatever... Being an individual with a post-graduate-level education and high IQ does not resolve that (if anything, it makes you better at rationalizing your irrational beliefs)

Not ever did he bring up religion or the existence of a god, and I was shocked when he revealed he was a devout Mormon... yet he fully accepted evolution and even once said that religion had no place in his classroom when confronted by a Muslim student about some lecture.

The church always helped those in need. Of course, wherever there are people there are problems, and Mormon church was no different. However, overall the positives outweighed the negatives.

Just a clarification, Joseph Smith didn't come up with Mormonism at age 14. He claimed to have received a vision at age 14, which allegedly started the whole process, but there's no documented account of this until 1832 (when he was 26). The church was officially founded in 1830, shortly after the Book of Mormon was published, which Joseph likely began working on 2 years earlier. So though it's possible that Joseph came up with some of the ideas of Mormonism as a teen, the actual work of writing, preaching, and gathering followers didn't start until well into his 20s.
And there are 4 accounts of how it started as well, with one where claimed that he was 15-16. The other accounts he claimed to be 14. You’d think Something as simple as your age would be easy to remember

@El Lobo I think he's more trying to eliminate misinformation. most of what he does has to do with exposing indoctrination of children and educating people on evolution. he wants to spread science and understanding, and a lot of religions don't allow people to have that. maybe you don't think it's a worthy cause, but I think making sure people are well educated and know about the truth of basic science is important in the modern world. another thing the guy does is he studies religion and gives his opinion on it. plenty of people study aspects of culture. just because this particular aspect of culture happens be offensive to some people doesn't mean it shouldn't be studied. and a lot of the points he makes are good, important points for the future of our species, as well as for modern society.
It's a reflection on the deeply ingrained need for people to form tribes or pacts, doubled with a society that isolates people. No wonder cults are springing up everywhere
South Park is fantastic, big fan of Matt and Trey. It’d be difficult to say they’re honest about and have a solid understanding of the nuances of spirituality. They’re incredibly grounded.
I know a guy who was raised as a jehovah's witnesses. He said he never celebrated a single holiday his entire childhood, not even his birthday was celebrated. He doesnt like to talk too much about it, i didnt know how strange their beliefs was. I thought it was just another branch of christianity. Until i met him and started looking into it.
Chris bruh good luck. Wait till you meet the family ahahah. I’ve known JWs who refuse to communicate with their children for up to 15 years once excommunicated. one helluva cult
Isaac Campos in accurate. The argument goes something like this: pharaoh had somebody’s head chopped off during his birthday. Somebody else had John the Baptist’s head chopped off during a birthday celebration. This must mean birthdays are bad because no good, peaceful birthday celebrations are ever recorded in the Bible where somebody doesn’t get hurt. Consequently, no one shall celebrate birthdays. No one shall wish anyone a happy birthday. Not your parents, not your siblings, not your own children, absolutely no one. And, if somebody wishes you one, you should tell them to stop it in the nicest and kindest way possible. Guess how I know.
@Mandelbroth Morten Lol. Ya. Okay. Great analysis there Einstein. Dawkins fans are the biggest overly pompous group out there. Hooray for Mormonism if it depresses this awful eugenisist chauvenist (probably racist) man.
That sounds great! But why does it have to come at the price of one of the most clearly untrue religions out there ? These are values that should be encouraged but the beliefs themselves shouldn’t
@@ztlabraptor211 who cares why they do it, if they want to have those beliefs and it causes them to live a healthy and responsible life, why should their beliefs be discouraged? If they are compelled by someone else then I have a problem with their beliefs being encouraged, but if it's free will, who cares. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just wondering what you mean
Iain Grieve you can have these things without the beliefs, so why not encourage the merits without the beliefs ? The beliefs themselves shouldn’t be encouraged, because they’re based around ignorance. That’s not even an insult towards Mormonism, just a fact that it’s based around text written from when we as humans were very ignorant of the world around us. Now the idea of religion teaches people to be fine with not knowing, and fine with accepting easy solutions without evidence, which hinders science. You also have people trying to incorporate religion into politics and education, which is a huge issue although that’s more of an issue with specific people than religious people as a whole
@@ztlabraptor211 to each their own dude, i just don't get why ppl quietly practising their beliefs should be discouraged. Sure, religion may influence the way some people vote, but honestly who cares lol, if they aren't pushing their beliefs on to others and are quietly going about their lives responsibly, then I just don't see why they should be actively discouraged.
Iain Grieve the same reason education is encouraged. I’m not saying you should be a dick about it and actively tell good natured religious people their beliefs are stupid and wrong, but people should be encouraged to think critically and try to figure out what’s true rather than what’s comforting

Some of them are really good musicians too.....they dont seem overly religious but.......they dont renounce Mormonism. Oh well!!!
Again, this doesn't justify the belief in an obvious lie. It makes me uneasy when people believe things like this as their judgement must be very questionable.
Most people that claim there is no god simply are not be truthful with them self. They more than likely have not done enough research to be so confident on the issue.
The Egyptian papyrus which were used to translate into the book of Abraham were burned in a museum in the Chicago Fire, then years later SOME fragments (11) were found to have survived. Those fragments were translated and found that they were not related to the book of Abraham translation, but that doesn’t mean these fragments were representative of the complete original papyrus. Joseph Smith only translated a part of the entire record he obtained. I don’t know of anyone that states how many records he had originally exactly, nor that the entire record was strictly this book of Abraham. Yet they claim in this interview that this is all the evidence you need to presume Joseph Smith was a charlatan. There is more than enough room for error here surrounding these circumstances of the book of Abraham to understand it, without assuming everyone is blind who believes it. The entire book of Doctrine and Covenants is direct revelation (answers to questions through prayer and vision and such) and not a translation, so if Joseph wanted to just add to the doctrine of the church he didn’t need to use a supposedly made up translation to do it.
Except the parts that survived the fire had the exact same facsimiles that Joseph put in his “translation” and referred to multiple times as part of the story. The pages that survived also included JS’s handwritten notes of this “translation”. We know for an absolute fact that what we have today are the very same pages that were part of Joseph’s con. He was a charlatan through and through. But even if he weren’t, the current church is as far from good and wholesome as anything has ever been. It is a corporation built on greed and hatred. If God exists he will punish the Mormon leadership first and hopefully the harshest for the way they were able to spin their evil to look good.
Everyone should google the video of Shaq talking about Mark Madsen who was a teammate of his and a Mormon. Shaq basically talks about how Mark was pretty much the cleanest and nicest guy ever and Shaq would go oit of his way to make sure the NBA lifestyle didnt infect him. He said that he realized that while he is not a Christian he sees that Christianity can be a shield ( I think that he used other word ) against worse things. I think it was a reference to Islam.
The part where they talked about tribalism is really important and true. that feeling that you are a part of something is just so ingrained in our minds. It's not just limited to religion. I have experienced it when I meet others from my ethnic group and there is this sort of familiarity that is present and non verbally.

IF DJT makes deals with the Taliban and says pull out troops by Sep, "what a foreign policy superhero, he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize!" ...if Biden carries out the plan, "what an international catastrophe!!!" I do acknowledge you could take examples from the reverse tribal lens too, but these things are so egregious. There is no equivalency at this time.

I am in theater, and have lived in LA too. A lot of actors are very open to new age human potential group stuff. Very ethical and based on psychology. But I have met other people fall into cult-like organizations like EST or Forum or Scientology.
Yup, I only knew one Mormon and his family for a while and hes the nicest guy I was ever friends with hands down. Very warm and kind, now that I'm remembering him I sort of miss him.
I once had a roommate with a Mormon ex. He knocked her up, and she was basically bullied into having an abortion by him and his parents, as, despite Mormons putting on a public face of being pro-life, they didn’t want her having his baby mar their family name and image. My roommate didn’t believe in abortion, but felt very painted into a corner, like she had no other options, and has been carrying this guilt with her ever since.

@Ajax Aidy As I'm noting other places in the comments section: YES. People are going to have a "religion" if they don't have one we would consider normal. There are a few who don't need it or find it suffocating, but I think they are over-represented in Internet comment sections. The people I know who were *really* screwed up and headed for death by alcoholism or life in prison were only made better by embracing an authoritarian religion that demanded a lot from them and preached hellfire and brimstone. Even people who aren't that bad off - they're going to seek a religion, and it is likely to very negative compared to a traditional Christian sect.

1 John 4:1-3
1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
Read the 2nd verse again. The Book of Mormon confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh many times throughout the book:
Alma 7:12-13
12 And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities.
13 Now the Spirit knoweth all things; nevertheless the Son of God suffereth according to the flesh that he might take upon him the sins of his people, that he might blot out their transgressions according to the power of his deliverance; and now behold, this is the testimony which is in me.

Mosiah 7:27

My post was to share what I experienced and why I came to the conclusion that "there is no sky fairae", as you put it, even though at one point I did believe in one. They like to shit on Christians for having a "holier than thou" attitude, when ironically, it's their pompous/smug/know-it-all behavior that comes off as "holier than thou".
Wtf is Mormonism?? Just another form of Christianity.
All of you have 50 versions of Christianity but all believe in Jesus.

The questions you suggested as superior that are centered around the individual necessitate the implication of the questions you reject which center around tribalism. When you refer to the individual, you imply the tribe. Hold your horses before you start looking down on others. Hooray for Mormonism if it depresses this awful eugenisist chauvenist (probably racist) man.
Living a life around being nice, having a good family and community connection, and living a clean life sounds pretty good to me...
Religion has very little hold on scientific advances these days, we are sending shit to Mars, if thats not "blasphemous" then what is lol. Of course church and state should be seperate, and I would say that they are, find me a truly religious, actually practising, politician.
I met this man years ago at a talk with Peter Bogosian and himself. He was so loving and caring. I had recently left the church and he told me he was proud of me. What a wonderful man.

When a mormon runs for president, I definitely freak out.
I’m a memeber of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and definitely not depressed.
I’m also a member and I’m severely depressed. Depression isn’t a joke, it’s a disease.
I live in a town in the southeast that happens to have a significant population of Mormons (of course, they dont outnumber protestants) and I have to say, they are some of the nicest/reliable people.......And yes, COOLEST people I've known. Some of them are really good musicians too.....they dont seem overly religious but.......they dont renounce Mormonism. Oh well!!!
My dealings with mormons has been good as well. What one believes is their own worry. Not mine.
Again, this doesn't justify the belief in an obvious lie. It makes me uneasy when people believe things like this as their judgement must be very questionable.
@@CoachSP4 all religions are an obvious lie. You must feel uneasy around 75% of the people you meet.

The part where they talked about tribalism is really important and true. that feeling that you are a part of something is just so ingrained in our minds. It's not just limited to religion. I have experienced it when I meet others from my ethnic group and there is this sort of familiarity that is present and non verbally.
Essentially everyone is in a tribe of some sort, religious or not.
It's almost impossible to avoid really.
Yes. Came here to say that too. (Paraphrasing) "people don't evaluate evidence, they ask, 'is this what my tribe believes'..." 100000%!!!!!
If DJT is making and getting vaccinated, then "what a triumph for science that our guy fast-tracked!!!" ...but if Biden is masking and vaccinating, "60% of vaccinated people will be dead in 5 years!"
IF DJT makes deals with the Taliban and says pull out troops by Sep, "what a foreign policy superhero, he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize!" ...if Biden carries out the plan, "what an international catastrophe!!!"
I do acknowledge you could take examples from the reverse tribal lens too, but these things are so egregious. There is no equivalency at this time.
@@hothamandfauri I think tribalism is the main reason people go to church, mosque, scientology churches etc.
Religion as declaration of tribal affinity makes more sense than religion as literal belief.
Majority of humanity wants a sense of belongingess and religion is a good source of having connections

I feel like I meet people that fit that description all the time in Hollywood ironically lol
I am in theater, and have lived in LA too.
A lot of actors are very open to new age human potential group stuff. Some of the real psychological groups I went to are good and I trust one very much as they literally sat everyone down after a long week workshop and taught basic psychology of what we just experienced and had us sign an agreement not to have a sexual or romantic relationship with anyone you met here for over a year because what we were experiencing was transference. Very ethical and based on psychology.
But I have met other people fall into cult-like organizations like EST or Forum or Scientology.
Sounds much more like Judaism to me.

Watch "Fight Club", maybe.
Õ_Õ Shy Guy I read this thread thinking Ajax would be the crazy person. Then you deflected and justified hunting down a white couple. Internet is weird sometimes
@Õ_Õ Shy Guy Stop the straw manning and conflation.
I'm looking at the literal context of the conversation. The guy gave you a link to the crime. Your quote reply to it above is "it doesn't matter" and then excuses that imply justification of the act.
Then you dont understand it at all. Religion, good ones anyway, is for the curious and open minded, and people who want more out of life than just instant and very temporary gratification.
@@turtlewolf8107 No argument on that - I was just quoting Dawkins. I know plenty of ppl who were born into a religion when they were young, and then embraced it themselves on their own terms when they were older -- or found religion after a wild youth and it helped them. So I honestly think he's wrong and just assumes that everyone is like him, rejecting all but cold logic and reason as they get older.

I find it hard to criticise Mormons and Scientologists when all the other religions seem to believe in an invisible, supernatural, being that lives in the sky.
The only reason people ridicule Mormonism and Scientology is because they aren't 2,000 year old stupid cults.
