  • In the seven decades since Ishirō Honda’s 1954 classic Godzilla kicked off the durable genre of the kaiju (or giant monster) movie, this fearsome mega-reptile, a prehistoric creature summoned from the depths of the sea by atomic radiation, has stomped, chomped, and fire-breathed his way through 38 movies, not to mention countless comic books and video games. In writer-director Takashi Yamazaki’s remarkable Godzilla Minus One, the venerable behemoth returns to his roots, once again serving as an embodiment of Japan’s anxiety about nuclear weapons in the aftermath of World War II.

Duh duh duh. Are you slow? Japans government was in shambles. Self defense force was non existent. Why would America who just killed hundreds of thousands of innocent Japanese civilians in 2 strikes care about defending it? Japan had nothing to offer america, not too mention America's fleet had already left and Japan was forced to destroy or surrender all naval units. The film should be anti government. Name one government that's started a war and not wasted lives and money or just lost?

Haha just saw this comment now (don't log onto this account very often)... but nah buddy, if anything it sounds like you're the only one here with issues you mental snowflake (judging how my review seemingly offended you so much or you're just some bored troll). But alright, I'll amuse you since you felt so compelled to leave such a dense comment and at the sometime thinking you're hot shit for doing so (again, just judging based on your attitude in how you started your comment):
"Self defense force was non existent."
First of all, sure - historically Japan did not have a self defense force at that time which is correct... I'm not, nor did I ever deny this, but here is the fun part - this is a fictional movie and is running on its own version of history (like come on, it has the Takao show up in 1947 to attack Godzilla, when in reality it was already sunk by the UK in 1946 as a target ship). Minus One's history is alternative to our own. The film basically tells us that MacArthur, knowing about the threat of Godzilla, warns Japan to begin strengthening its defensives in order to protect itself against Godzilla. Thus without wanting US involvement (which makes no sense and I'll get to why soon), this line leads us to assume that that in this film's timeline (since in real history, MacArthur never would had said such a thing until after occupation), the creation of the self defense forces is moved up from 1954 to 1947. And as we seen in the original 1954 Godzilla, within a year the self defense forces were able to deploy quite the impressive force to defend Tokyo (granted they failed to kill Godzilla, but get an A for effort in scaring him away).
"Why would America who just killed hundreds of thousands of innocent Japanese civilians in 2 strikes care about defending it?"
You're confusing wartime politics and thinking with those of post-war. Furthermore, you do realize that from 1945 to 1952 (US occupation of Japan), the US military effectively guaranteed Japan's security and were fully responsible for protecting Japan from external threats (hmm, guess what kind of threat Gozilla is??). MacArthur was essentially the absolute leader in Japan, yet we don't even see him in the movie at all? Oh yeah, because he's part of the government and that would go against this movie's anti-government theme lol.
"Japan had nothing to offer america"
Yeah... wrong again, bud. Post-WWII Japan actually offered the US significant strategic, economic, and political benefits. There is a reason the US and Japan even after occupation wrote up the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty and are still tight today.
"Not too mention America's fleet had already left and Japan was forced to destroy or surrender all naval units. "
I like how you come here acting like a big know it all and but the more you talk, the more you reveal that you actually don't know what you're even talking about lol. My god man, open a history book. This is just plain wrong. During the US occupation, the Americans maintained a substantial naval presence in the region to ensure security and stability. Not to mention that the US' largest naval base in Japan was Yokosuka Naval Base, which not only is very close to Tokyo, but also Godzilla had to literally pass through it (and all the US ships stationed there) in order to get to Tokyo.
"The film should be anti government."
Why's that? Because you said you? I don't have a problem with making it anti-government, but it's gotta make sense. At least in 1954 Godzilla it had Japan all on its own fresh off US occupation and it could had shown how incompetent it was or w/e. But nah, for no reason this Minus One decided to set its story post-WW2 and during US occupation, where the Yankees were controlling the Japanese government. Thus making the Japanese government look dumb and nonexistent here is also showing the Americans (who were in control of the country) in the same light, which in itself is dumb considering how much the US were beneficial in transforming Japan into a peaceful, democratic, and economically vibrant nation, laying out foundations for Japan's post-war success and its emergence as a major global power. This is why I had an issue with the government being pretty much nonexistent here and complaining that the excuse the movie gave being lame. Like come on, multiple US destroyers full of crewmen would 100% get a response. Not to mention during Godzilla's raid on Tokyo, we don't see any American troops which is just straight up BS.
"Name one government that's started a war and not wasted lives and money or just lost?"
Remind me again what this has to do with Godzilla? But yeah fine, the US and the Gulf War (figured I'd use them as the example since we keep talking about them). Relatively short war and achieved their objectives quickly and with fewer casualties compared to many other conflicts. Other examples just to name a few are: the Six-Day War (Israel), Falklands War (UK), Indo-Pakistani war of 1971 (India), etc. That said, you do realize that all wars result in significant human and financial costs, right? War is brutal, but its part of human history and will always be.
