To this day I still mourn the loss of Dave Carter, a true genius of a writer. God only knows how much more treasure he would have blessed us with had he still been alive. Oh, Dave, how I miss you.
this is the absolute best version of this song...i was in the audience that night and it was beyond sublime. It was played at Dave Carter's own Celebration of Life and he is the only songwriter I know who wrote the perfect song to be played at his own memorial
Dave is/was my cousin; i treasure the memories made with this fine and sensitive soul, his wickedly sharp humor and the care he so unselfishly gave to others. ❤
When i go!! For nearly 7 days now, due to rather severe heart issues i have seriously believed that i am "going"...although i believe i am fully and totally ready to meet my Maker, now that i'm finally feeling SO much better, i'm not in quite so big a hurry, but...i am ready to "leap like coyote".
I stop and listen to this often. I feel like the banjo IS Dave's voice. The words stop me from whatever I am doing or thinking, and every time, a different phrase resonates in a new way. Tracy's violin informs and echoes Dave's voice and her harmonies soothe. A classic from a man in tune with human nature, the natural and the spirit worlds. He must have been special to know.
One of the best songs ever written. Made all the more poignant by Dave's early demise and His own 'wandering form is out on the borderline between death and resurrection and the council of the pines'. RIP Dave.
Dave and Tracy played Godfrey Daniels the small folk Club in Bethlehem Pennsylvania back early 2000s I got to meet David right before the show he wss a beautiful dude... he gave me his CD I gave him one of my CDs....this song kills
I heard Dave Carter for the first time the morning after 911, the song, "When I Go" was playing on the radio as I drove to work, and I could just swear that song was written for that moment. Sigh, mournful sister, whisper and turn I will rattle like dry leaves when I go Stand in the mist where my fire used to burn I will camp on the night breeze when I go
Dave Carter was a conduit for shared images born in the primordial ooze. If Joseph Campbell was a singer/poet this is what he might have created. Incredibly deep and powerful music.
What a gem to stumble onto. And the tablas player is my friend Benjy Wertheimer which is really fun to find. I recognized his drum hands before confirming the identity. He introduced me to the music of Dave and Tracy years ago and I still just love them as well as Tracy's new music.
Love this great song and their singing/playing it. Just turned 71 quite recently. Hoping to be around for quite a while. Would love this played "When I Go."
I stumbled upon this song on Judy Collins' new CD. She sings it with Willy Nelson and it is beautiful. But this performance by the writer is masterful. Thank you for posting
God I miss Dave Carter...Dave and Tracy made some of the best music ever in a very short time. One of the best duos ever - up there with Don and Phil or Paul and Artie. (Artie didn't play the fiddle either.) There are a lot of cool Dave Carter songs, but none better than "When I Go."
First comment that reflected on the meaning of the song. I'd use 'transformation' though. I guess most would say, 'I hope ...', rather than 'I will ... Does make becoming an angel look boring by comparison.
I will bellow like the thunder drum, invoke the storm of war A twisting pillar spun of dust and blood up from the prairie floor I will sweep the foe before me like a gale out on the snow And the wind will long recount the story, reverence and glory, when I go Think about it...
Thank you so much for posting this. I was lucky enough to be there that night and the magic will always remain in my memory, this makes it even better.
Please fathom this: Dave Carter died of a quadruple heart attack, complete instant failure while performing onstage, his heart exploded. Then listen to his 'When I Go', the greatest death song ever written (months before his death). I say an angel flew through this world and left at its moment of perfection on Earth. Yes tears flow, but only for our loss or in the moments of transcendence his music still gives us. Tracey went on and bloomed in her own right. Dave Carter, where else would a hero die.
Why do the good die young? Dave and Tracy.....Does it get any better? Dave is certainly one of the greatest songwriters and Tracy one of the greatest singers out there. Please upload more and more!
As much as I like Judy Collins and Willie Nelson's version this, in my opinion, is the best version. Totally haunting. This live version by Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer is so powerful. I put Dave Carter's lyrics and poetry right up there with Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell. RIP Dave Carter, you went far too soon. May you fly like the eagle forever.
Wow! Clips of Dave and Tracy are so rare, thank you very much for posting this! I was fortunate to have been there, seeing and hearing them again brings joy and tears.
I heard this sung by Pat Wictor on a cd by Cheryl Prashker. It's likely THE most beautiful song every written, and I will have it sung at my funeral. Thank you, Dave. I have added my diamond tears to your treasure in the sky.
Bill Nash performed this song at Uncle Calvin's on Friday night. (Great job, Bill) I've had it in my own songbook for a long time and do it from time to time, but this is such a great version, by the guy who wrote it. Note the Sitar being played with a bow at the beginning. Interesting.
fairlybursting...I believe that lovely instrument that Benjy is playing so well is actually a dilruba..."bowed sitar"...WONDERFUL choice for the piece!
Probably partly because audience members didn't have fancy smart phones in their hands to record with quality back then. I didn't get a cell phone till 2002, and it certainly couldn't make a video.
Jivegurudavysez: Wren Eye Go,Pls come 2 My Vy King send off,cuz it will B a Helluva Concert W/ This Version being the final song,B4 then mite tas well Just List them Alphabetically:Amon dual 2 thru Zappa! BTW,Just now added the Hooters "All you Zombies" Any ways ,I'm 26(x3), so won't have 2 weight as long as the rest of Y'all! Packs omen do 2Awl U fell low Travelers!

That introduction!! Exquisite, haunting, evoking the mists and beauties of the Appalachian Mountains in the mornings.
One of the best songs ever written. Made all the more poignant by Dave's early demise and His own 'wandering form is out on the borderline between death and resurrection and the council of the pines'. RIP Dave.
Seriously, one of the best songs I've ever heard from two people whose alchemy together was inspired from above.
Dave and Tracy played Godfrey Daniels the small folk Club in Bethlehem Pennsylvania back early 2000s I got to meet David right before the show he wss a beautiful dude... he gave me his CD I gave him one of my CDs....this song kills
Dave passed away just a few days shy of his 50th birthday - word was the celestial angles on that other plane of existence wanted him back .....
This is such a beautiful song. I heard it for the first time Today on the radio. This gives me hope for our present and after life 🧬💖
None better than Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer
Hello 👋👋👋
I heard Dave Carter for the first time the morning after 911, the song, "When I Go" was playing on the radio as I drove to work, and I could just swear that song was written for that moment.
Sigh, mournful sister, whisper and turn
I will rattle like dry leaves when I go
Stand in the mist where my fire used to burn
I will camp on the night breeze when I go
Love, love, LOVE this extended opening instrumental! I teared up when Dave started picking the "official" opening.
GlorianaBanana i rarely NOT cry at a Dave/Tracy song
Dave Carter was a conduit for shared images born in the primordial ooze. If Joseph Campbell was a singer/poet this is what he might have created. Incredibly deep and powerful music.
Magnificent. A true blessing to get to see this, especially now. Namaste
What a gem to stumble onto. And the tablas player is my friend Benjy Wertheimer which is really fun to find. I recognized his drum hands before confirming the identity. He introduced me to the music of Dave and Tracy years ago and I still just love them as well as Tracy's new music.
Beautiful comment,Hello Kristin how are you doing 👋👋👋👋
Love this great song and their singing/playing it. Just turned 71 quite recently. Hoping to be around for quite a while. Would love this played "When I Go."
+Eliahu Goodman Hope you are around quite a while too. Glad you appreciate and enjoy this music as I do. Have you been into folk music a long time?
me too, at 75 it feels right and close in this time of illness, death and revolution!
You must be 79 now. That's my age not.
by far the best recording of this unforgettable song
Amazing song so glad there is a catalog of Dave and Tracy songs here
I stumbled upon this song on Judy Collins' new CD. She sings it with Willy Nelson and it is beautiful. But this performance by the writer is masterful. Thank you for posting
Beautiful comment, Hello carol how are you doing 👋👋👋👋
I miss u uncle Dave
God I miss Dave Carter...Dave and Tracy made some of the best music ever in a very short time. One of the best duos ever - up there with Don and Phil or Paul and Artie. (Artie didn't play the fiddle either.) There are a lot of cool Dave Carter songs, but none better than "When I Go."
Love this song... words can't tell...
this song pierces my heart .. RIP Dave Carter ... what a talent
So sweetly mournful and evocative of the eventual, unbelievable destruction of the self which we all face;some of us sooner than others!
First comment that reflected on the meaning of the song. I'd use 'transformation' though. I guess most would say, 'I hope ...', rather than 'I will ... Does make becoming an angel look boring by comparison.
Incredible presentation of his own journey to come!
Oh my... what a moving, beautiful piece of poetry... stunning...
Crying, smiling.... thanks....
I really like this type of songs!
Beautiful example of the genius of Dave Carter. Great fiddle by Tracy Grammer.
I will bellow like the thunder drum, invoke the storm of war
A twisting pillar spun of dust and blood up from the prairie floor
I will sweep the foe before me like a gale out on the snow
And the wind will long recount the story, reverence and glory, when I go
Think about it...
What a poet he was.
Thank you so much for posting this. I was lucky enough to be there that night and the magic will always remain in my memory, this makes it even better.
We miss him, I miss him...... but he IS with us.
This might be the finest song I've ever heard.
Thank you, thank you, thank you so much for posting this rare jewel!
Just AWESOME..!! a wonderful journey..!!
Other-worldly, deep and spiritual. Amazing. Thanks for this rare visual capture of a totally unique artist and man.
It doesn't get better than this. Thank you kindly for posting this performance.

David Wolf I don’t think he died onstage, but in Tracy’s arms after a run. I could be wrong.
Actually he died OFF stage after taking a run.
Thank you Clytia
@@netw52 You're not wrong. Carter died from a massive heart attack in Tracy Grammer's arms after a morning run.
Thank you for sharing this treasure❣️
speechless...
peace and enlightenment.
A great man gone too soon...Rock On Dave...x
Excellent ultra rare footage! Dave in top from!
Stunning extended intro, and equally stunning audio quality! Thanks so much for posting.
R.I.P Dave. Your songwriting is sadly missed.
In my opinion, and from what I love to hear in music... it just does not get any better than this. thanks so much for posting..
willy
Great version! Thanks for posting these Terry.
All of the thanks below and more thanks. As I said on your clip of "Gentle Arms of Eden" I feel like a kid at Christmas. So why am I crying?
Peace.
Why do the good die young? Dave and Tracy.....Does it get any better? Dave is certainly one of the greatest songwriters and Tracy one of the greatest singers out there. Please upload more and more!

I like this longer version.
I love this song... R.I.P Dave...
Amazing. Stunning. Thanks so much for posting.
I heard this sung by Pat Wictor on a cd by Cheryl Prashker. It's likely THE most beautiful song every written, and I will have it sung at my funeral.
Thank you, Dave. I have added my diamond tears to your treasure in the sky.
The hairs on my arms were doing handstands during Tracy's playing at the very end.
Wow! Powerful!
Yes you can say that,Hello Paula how are your doing
Awesome.
:D :D I love music

Hello ginny how are you doing 👋👋👋
♥
fairlybursting...I believe that lovely instrument that Benjy is playing so well is actually a dilruba..."bowed sitar"...WONDERFUL choice for the piece!
That's right, I forgot to mention him for credit. Lovely playing by Benjjy on this.
More please! Why aren't there more live Dave and Tracy performances on RUclips?
Probably partly because audience members didn't have fancy smart phones in their hands to record with quality back then. I didn't get a cell phone till 2002, and it certainly couldn't make a video.
These are great coz CDs of them are like limited edition or smth and go on amazon for a minimum of 250$CAD for most...
Prophet
My God
I did'nt realize who this dude was....
I just recently heard Judy Collins & Willie Nelson's version of this, but in most of the time the original is better:)
Hi all--- I heard of him of course (same name) so I thought Id check him out.. Crikey his good--But why Late? What happened to him?
REAVERS!!!
Is that really a sitar? I never saw one played with a bow before...
I believe Dave Carter was as talented a songwriter, if not more so, than Bob Dylan.
Dave died unexpectedly of a heart attack while on tour.
Very sad
