How to Draw with Graphite: Beginners Learn the Twist and Flick Drawing Technique

- These instructions for drawing with graphite sticks are brilliant. There is so much you can do with graphite. In this easy graphite drawing tutorial about landscape drawing, I'll explain how, by using the edge of the graphite stick, you can create wonderfully imaginative marks on cartridge paper. By twisting the graphite stick on its edge really creative lines can be created. If you are learning to draw or want to expand your drawing techniques, you should get hold of some graphite, because it’s brilliant.
The tutorial starts by demonstrating the type of marks that can be made with the graphite stick. By twisting your wrist and varying the pressure you apply to the graphite stick, wonderful marks and lines can be created. The tutorial then demonstrates how to use the multitude of marks created to draw a simple landscape drawing. The drawing consists of a gnarled tree created by twist and flicking the graphite. Fence posts are also drawn using the same technique.
The easy drawing arts tutorial is aimed at beginners to drawing and those students and others wishing to improve their drawing techniques.

It's actually a piece of graphite but I get your drift. Much appreciated, cheers Paul

I'mma just a beginner..
Umm what's the difference between charcoal and graphite??
Charcoal is a matte dark drawing material that crumbles easily and is often used for expressive marks. Graphite is a slightly shiny material, usually in a grey that is used commonly in pencils and sticks for most writing and drawing applications.
Wonderful.. thumbs up.
Thanks very much, please subscribe if you haven't already. Cheers Paul
Is charcoal and graphite the same medium? Can they be used in the same manner? Or is graphite totally different?
Graphite is different from charcoal but both are carbon based. Remember that graphite is the material you find in every pencil.
Nice video sir
Thanks. Cheers
I was wondering if one couldn't say that this tecnique works like sculpturing something;
I think that might be stretching it a bit.
@@PaulPriestleyart you see, there is this idea in art history going back to da Vinci vs. Michelangelo thats says there are two ways to give form to things: by carving out or adding lines (outlining);
Wonderful 💕
Cheers
Can you use this also to fill in large areas on a Bristol board? I’m having trouble with filling in large areas with my 2B pencil (having lots of visible stripe marks when shading). I’m drawing comicart by the way.
You are pressing on too hard and not being consistent with the pressure if you are getting stripes. A little more subtlety with the pressure should help. Cheers
@@PaulPriestleyart thanks for your reaction! I really appreciate it. The marks always happen when I’m filling in areas after each other. My favorite artist can do this without any marks and I don’t understand how. Here’s an example: www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=1639052.
Do you use a knife to cut it into pieces? Thanks in advance!
You could do, I just break it, but it is a bit difficult. I've used a 6B piece of graphite in the drawing. Cheers Paul
Ah like pastels!
True
SUBCRIBED❤
Cheers, thanks
drawing masterpiece in less than 9min hhaha
Thanks
when i use the edge of the graphite stick on my paper not all parts are covered by the graphite and it looks really grainy? instead of a smoother look like yours :(
The graininess can be cause by rough paper which can give a great textured effect.
Dear sir, perhaps you can help me with something? I've been looking for a white pencil that draws over charcoal. I saw it on another video of a lightening storm but the guy won't answer. I was hoping you would let me know what kind of white pencil does that. Needless to say I have a bunch of white pencils that don't work if you are in need lol.
Not sure, have you tried a white pastel pencil? You can get them at most good art stockists
@@PaulPriestleyart thank you for answering. I just ordered one from Amazon that claims to draw over charcoal. That remains to be seen if not I will keep looking.
Great
Cheers
thank👍

Some of my graphite sticks and crayons are as big as my dad's finger; those can cover a lot of paper surface in a hurry.
They are designed to be big, gives lots of flexibility in how you use them.
Really can't fathom how this is supposed to be for beginners. You move way too fast and I don't feel like I'm learning much at all. I tried copying what you're doing but with little success. I was only able to copy the beginning, but even then I don't know what I'm doing. I'll just stick to pencil for now.
It's just a matter of practice, you have to keep going. Good luck
@@PaulPriestleyart Thank you for the words. Maybe when I have some more time I'll try that out.
