Starting to Draw? Three Proven Things to Do before Drawing Still Life - PART 4

- Just started drawing? These instructions for drawing will help you create great drawings. This video covers three things you need to do to make your drawing absolutely brilliant. I'll show you everything you need to know in simple easy to follow steps. This is the fourth of my art tutorials on starting to draw for absolute beginners. In this video I am going to bring together all the elements covered in the previous three easy drawing tutorials; curves, lines, tone, shading, creating depth and using the pencil. I am drawing three paint brushes in a pot each one drawn with a different pencil, HB, 2B and 8B. The drawing is a still life drawing. This method helps to create different tones and therefore creates depth in the drawing, because darker lines look closer than lighter lines.
Lines, curves (plus a link to understanding eye level) tone and shading are also covered to create a three-dimensional drawing. This technique is ideal for still life drawing but can be applied to any type of drawing.
This video is aimed at beginners, students and anyone else wanting to improve their drawing skills and learn to draw.

I’m new to your videos and am learning lots. Not drawn since 4th year of secondary school - nearly 30 years ago. (Blimey!) Thanks for explaining things clearly. Wish you were my art teacher back then and maybe I might have been able to take Art at GCSE! 😁
Really pleased you are enjoying my videos, I do enjoy making them and it's nice to know they are appreciated. Cheers Paul
“It’s not perfect, it’s wonderful” - AMEN to that and thank you, Sir.
You are very welcome
For the first time I can finally say from watching your art series, that I can say without a shadow of a doubt that
Art is the repetitive, variation of expressing a line (including shades and colour).
Thank you. I honestly believe that I can draw anything with a lot of time and patience!
That's great, good luck with your drawing.
Great lessons!! Thank you! I love that sketching kind of style. These videos are really helping me.

I like the enthusiasm :) I'm glad I found your RUclips channel mid-way through last year (I think).
Thanks for your mind comment. Cheers Paul
I used to look at the practice of drawing as painting's poor cousin.
I drew roughly just to be able to proceed with the application of my oils.
It was only a means to an end.
But I have come to appreciate and value drawing for its own sake.
It is an elegant art that can bear profound results !
The work I've done with graphite and charcoal during these past months of 'sheltering in place' have yielded pieces that stand up more than favorably to my oil paintings.
( In some places, the term VALUE is used instead of TONE )
As Ingres once said, 'If it is well enough drawn, it is well enough painted.'
Fantastic! You are a very good teacher. I am a beginner too. Thanks.
Glad you have found there video useful, have you seen the others in the series? I aim my videos at beginners because you don't learn much from watching timelapse super realist drawings. Cheers Paul

thank you sir
You are very welcome
thank u ...........no word to say....I wish u would be ma teacher
You are very kind. Cheers
Lovely, thank you. I'm so intimidated by all the hyperrealism 😮 its not how I want to draw. I've taken photos and think it's odd to spend so much time to make something look like a photo. Some of those people start out with a tracing which isn't drawing to me. More like a tattoo artist. They have lovely shading techniques but still, I don't want to trace. I want to learn to make the best representation I can with my own hand and eye and practice. Thanks Mr. Priestly 💌
I totally agree with you. Good luck with your drawing.
I am learning a lot
That's great
excellent !
Thank you! Cheers!

Do you have a book on how to draw your drawings are the best I have seen for a beginner the videos go to quick.
I don't have a book. I would suggest you stop the video occasionally. Cheers
Nice
Cheers
Like!

Wow, I'm early.
Check out my channel, RUclips.com/paulpriestleyart and you'll find the earlier videos. Cheers Paul
i will buy this pencils i like it
That's great
What if i dont have these pencils? Shall I buy them or I can draw with my pencils ( I only have HB, 5b & 6b)
The pencil are not as important as what you do with them. Use what you have.
Im jumping ahead but have you advised your viewers to upload a photo of their own onto a mini projector?
I wouldn't do that. I'd much prefer them to learn to draw from life. Cheers
Please how to shade pen

can i have names?
I use Derwent pencils
lost my HB pencil and now Im pissed lol
Never happen to me when I lost a pencil
Mr Paul do you hate hyper realistic drawings?
Yes, there is no individuality in them. It's a great skill but not sure it is art
Paul thanks for your help. But don't be precise or it looks kinda boring. Kinda do your own style. Follow your ART
I do
I do
I can't draw straight line
So what. Andy Warhol couldn't and he became a very famous artist.
ive been trying this for 3 hours no result looks like a dog dumped in a plant pot when i try
Stop feeling sorry for yourself, grab your pencil and have another go. Cheers Paul
Lockdown gang rise up
Stay in and draw
I appreciate everything you're teaching. Thank you so much.
