Apart from agreeing with all the positive feedback in your comments, I would also like to mention that I LOVE the lighting and background ambiance so much in your video. You really managed to show the most important shots in the golden ratio, perfect reflections (in the screens) and just. UGH. SO GOOD 😍
I used to work some at a Mac retailer in the 90:s and remember most machines from the era. I was a Mac fanboy and it was great having access to lots of cool hardware. I remember no real problem with the plastics back then, so it aged really bad. I now have a large collection of vintage 8 and 16 bit home computers, mostly older than the Macs. These machines show much less brittle plastics problems than the macs.
What on earth were they thinking, eh? And thanks, I was winging it with the texture and it turned out well for a first attempt. I think there's something there with practice and refinement...
if not mistaken it was Apple who recommended to raise their Apple ///, 5 inches from a table and then drop them down - hoping to re-seat the ICs which might have come out because of lack of ventilation! :D
God id love to have one of these so much. They had PowerMac 5XXX all in ones at my elementary school and they’re the first computer memories I have. I know they’re not the most beloved Macs of all time but I really think they have a timeless design and would absolutely make one my main retro Mac if I could get one. Thanks for keeping this one out of the scrapyard.
My dad worked as an Apple Education systems engineer for an Apple reseller. They were cleaning the warehouse at work and at one point he brought like two of these home (circa 2000) and my brother and sister and I would play network games with them. A lot of Bolo!
Thanks! I'm fairly new to this, but please spread the word if you like :) All the RUclips-y clicks do genuinely help small channels reach a wider audience
If you don't have to pause, and even replay the last few seconds from time to time, you're not watching this properly. There's so much going on here! Such amount of dedicated work, really admirable.
So glad I got this in my recommended, instant subscribe! No music, no voiceover, just the sights & sounds of giving a well-used PowerMac the respect it deserves. I find this very similar to that one Toyota Sienna detailing video that blew up a few years back, but this is right up my vintage Mac alley. I can't wait to see what you do in the future, hopefully you can tackle a Mac Plus (it's beautifully simple to work on).
What an amazing restoration - and video. I know how long it takes to make those close-ups. One suggestion when you re-install SMD caps: apply solder on one pad, add flux, solder the pad. THEN, apply solder to the other pad. If you apply solder to both, the capacitor won't reach the PCB. It'll work I guess but if you do one at the time and make sure the first pad has reached the PCB, then the second pad will be in place to take solder. Looking forward to the next video!
I absolutely love your style of videos. I used these computers when I was in Kindergarten. We had the walls lined with this specific model, probably about 12 of the 5400 model in total . I remember it very fondly. I was always running to get to one to play Thinkin' Things Collection 1 on it. I am glad someone has a deep passion for preserving these computers.
Yes! Aside from not wanting to snap those small tabs, that's exactly why I love leaving them. I don't have to look at them all the time, but it's a nice reminder :)
Great work-slow, careful, meticulous, but fast-paced in the editing. Subbed! In the late '90s I had a 5200CD (same form factor). It was famously underpowered, but the I/O was pretty robust for an all-in-one. I was fond of it.
And to think we make air fryers using plastics blows my mind to this day! Had heaps of issues being an electrician when they never used UV stabilised plastics. Their junk couldn't last 2 years in our Aussie conditions
I loved these old machines. They were everywhere in my highschool before they were all replaced with Molar Macs. Actually decent all-in-one Power Macs. Nice restoration, as always! I think you should embrace your cyberpunk restoration aesthetic with the cinder block walls, echo-y room, and metal table surface. I love it, it's really unique. See ya around!
I love the Molar... but I think I might love the 5400 more now (just don't tell the G3). And thanks for the kind words :) Definitely going for the liminal-industrial-cyberpunk thing. Teenage me would be happy, haha
I remember using these machines in the mid-90s in school. Brings back memories. Your technical knowledge is impressive. Solid state drive and a G3 upgrade on top of it. Nice video.
Well, I'm relieved to hear that you didn't try to ship one. There are countless sad stories about that. I hope you'll find one local sooner than later -- I'm rooting for you!
I find cleaning older Macs like this very pleasing. I detailed my Classic I, which looks like new, except a couple for small dings up front, but it's not yellowed and I restored it to its former glory. Currently runs 7.1 via BlueSCSI V2 with Wi-Fi and a 4GB SD card with a 2GB hard drive image. I love how my system turned out and my next mod will be a Noctua fan mod. The Classic II needs a retr0brite, but it's also restored and working great. Just need to recap the analog board, but for now, the voltage is steady and the audio is clear as a bell.
Sounds awesome! Please get to the analog board sooner than later... the Classic I & II are pretty much guaranteed to have leaking AB caps :( But it sounds like you have a great eye for detail, so they are in good hands
@@iiidiy Thankfully, these aren't that hard to work on. Both logic boards in my Classic I and II use SMD Tantalum capacitors and the one system has had a full recap. Going to order analog board caps for the Classic II and do a full recap on it. I might as well de-yellow the Classic II chassis and add holes to the side of the Classic I for the speaker so it'll be louder.
In 2003-2004, the newspaper I worked at had several Powermacs like these. WE were transitioning t0 the G4 iMacs and many of these were upgraded to G3 with the older ones retired. In 2004, the last of them were scrapped and replaced with Dells. The rest of us got G4s and my boss got a G5.

@@KevinFields777 good question. I didn’t track my time, but it was probably around 40-50 hours spread over a week. Maaaaybe, but they were in VERY rough shape. I picked up the one in my AIO video last winter, around Dec/Jan and he had several dozen back then. By the time I went back in April, they had been picked through and he was down to the dregs, maybe a dozen or two left, but all in pretty awful condition.
