    You know, landing on your side or upside-down can earn you a "You've wrecked your car" message even if your car isn't really wrecked. However, I speculate that the engine would be stalling at the point when the car flips over. I'm assuming that all drivable cars in Driver are equipped with carburetors, which rely on gravity to work properly. If the car flips over and lands on either its side or upside-down, the carburetor can't function properly anymore. This leads to fuel starvation, which causes the engine to stall. I learned this from my late father, who was a mechanic at FedEx from August 1997 until his passing in April 2020.

      Or..there is just no way for the car to flip over, so the devs added a "You've wrecked your car"

    I'm loving these Driver videos. My dad gave me his Windows 95 PC when he upgraded to a Windows 98 one and this was one of the games I spent so much time playing as a kid. I'm in my 30s now and haven't played Driver in forever but watching these is making it all come right back to me.

    The 1st experiment you shown reminded me one time when I was a little kid, I also did a somewhat similar experiment in the PS1 version:
    I was playing "Take A Ride" on Miami at day, and I thought: HEY! what if I only take damage with the rear? So, whenever I ran into any police cars I would ram them with the rear. I did this cause somehow in my childish mind I came to the conclusion that as long as the front is protected, my car won't get wrecked (like in Destruction Derby 1 & 2). To my surprise, that didn't work and I saw all the flames coming up from the front despite NOT taking even a single scratch in the front and that TOTALLY blew me. Little did I know. I was a little irrational kid back then (6 or 7 years old)
    Fantastic video, man! Keep up the good stuff!

      At lest one connection to the Destruction Derby 2 is the survival mode in Driver. Cops cars behave wery similarly to AI in DD2 when you drive in the wrecking arenas.

    Part of the reason for these damage models is Reflections did the original demolition derby before this which had an incredibly advanced damage model that worked off of basically kinda the armor system you would see in interstate 76 with 8 different hit points that would deform based on where the impact was, 3 front, 3 aft, and 2 midship, also as for why the damage doesnt effect the handling
    a popular form of car construction that was used on most american cars save for ironically cars like the firebird and the dodge charger, the ones that got bashed the most was called body on frame
    where you'd have these giant I beams essentially with everything connected to it, complete with a giant stick of a rear axel
    its kinda why our cars sucked so much yet for bashing and demolition derbying the resulting result was well, the bodywork would get trashed, but everything else was still intact
    unless a wield let go, crash structures and cheapness kinda did away with it, opting for a thing where basically you have this bubble, the unibody with two rails where everything is connected to it in the front
    its why alot of those cars have roll cages and all kinds of crazyness done to them'
    IE the 71 ford mustang, the 1967 till I think damn near 1993 firebird, and the entire 1968 till 1973 run of the charger
    its why cops always used that damn crown victoria for what felt like damn near a century, you could run the thing into a pole, take the body off and by the end of the week the thing would be back running

    Another point to be noted, there's some kind of damage "infection". if civilians hit one another they will continue like nothing happened. BUT if they hit a car you previously hit before, then they "die" as well. and all civilians hitting ANY cars that had any connection to the civi you killed will die as well. interesting.

    • @Bittboy
      @Bittboy Год назад +3

      @@neillrogers3604 The game was ported at some point in mid/late 1998, and the PS1 version was given more priority since more people had a PlayStation than a capable gaming PC. All hands on deck until launch. Obviously a good move because Driver on PS1 became one of the BEST selling games. Afterwards, the PS1 devs went on to start Driver 2, and the PC team finished up within a few months. Yes, I'm fully aware of how early the PC version looks and feels. I've reverse engineered both versions of the game and know a lot about the development history ;)
