    You actually helped solve a fever dream my cousins and I have been having for decades. We were being chased by the cops once, came down a jump from one of the inclines and the cop that was chasing us must have hit the roof of another car because it got absolutely *launched* into the air, coming down a few moments later. We never replicated it and no one ever believed us so thanks for the proof and unlocking a core memory :)

    Things like hitting the cars roof sends you flying reminds me of how Driver is a good example to why we should praise game developers nowdays, because for every aspect of the game they put thought and time into it, for every small detail you see they had to make sure it would work the way it should. For Driver they had to save every bit of memory possible while making sure it would still play as intended, cars parking and other minor things is what made it a banger back in the day, so sad the franchise was abandoned...

      Look at it this way, at least the game died with some dignity intact and didn't become utter cringe like Watch Dogs (with both 2 and Legions being terrible offenders of this, 1 is just generic at worst).

    The cut pickup is a rather poor attempt at a Ford Ranchero. The car version they didn't cut is based on the 73-76 Ford Gran Torino which also had a pickup or UTE variation. It seems the devs scrapped the truck version because they didn't have time to finish the looks of it properly. It almost looks like the same 3d model as the other pickup but with the Torino's textures.

    • @minmogrovingstrongandhealthy
      @minmogrovingstrongandhealthy 10 месяцев назад

      The purple pickup in the garage is the same model as the world pickup just the textures are swapped with that other car even shown in the video. (Torino?)
      And honestly the garage version looks better (even tho its weird but still better) then the world version since that one have some weird nonsense texture mapping, like the car door somehow ends in the middle and not where, like its placed half way through it should be and is all wobbly distorted.
      You can use it as a meme "we have the El Camino at home" then show this mess XD
      Another car that really bothers me is that station vagon, the texturing or lets say layout placements on it doesn't make any sense ...
      There are few other mistakes on some cars but these two were always an eyesore. I can't imagine playing this on PC too. On PS1 and with a CRT TV combo I don't mind it but outside of that no thanks ...
      Driver 1 and 2 always needed a remake and this comes from a person who hates remakes ...

    Nice video, however, there are some things that I'll like to add:
    - Concerning the colors, there's one unused one that can't be loaded under normal condition, you'll have to use a hack to be able to see it. The way the game loads the traffic car is like a color palette, which the values concerning type and color are pre-determined, and this can also be changed through hacks
    - Concerning their paths, you can actually change the path they use by forcing them the direction through code, they'll use their blinkers accordingly to where they go, even if the path doesn't exist and lead them to nowhere.
    - Concerning the damage, the civ cars can actually hold the same damage as the player car, however, a special flag is set when the player car hit them, therefore disabling them. If you hit them then turn off the flag, they'll continue to drive like normal. Also, they do not get in collision with buildings or objects to avoid getting them stuck, but this flag can be enabled so that any civ car can hit any objects/buildings.
    If you need for any future video, I can provide you a monitor code, which put the camera on them and follow them as long as you want, you can find some funny stuff, like the cops can chase them lol
    Still a very nice video, happy to still see people interested in this game!

      @@Weylmes I disagree. In GTA 4 and 5 they both calculate deformation in a lazy way. Every separate mesh (door, body, fender, hood, bumper etc) is treated as part of the same one. So the car deforms like it was a single piece of clay and you smoothed it. In a real car, those are all separate parts attached only in specific places, so they bend differently to each other. Driver sells that illusion much better with things like bent hoods

    The car physics (suspension details, etc.) in this game do not even exist in today's games.
    Even though it was a Ps1 game, it had such physics and car damage details. Absolutely surprising!
    Also, playing the game at 60 FPS breaks the "touching the roof of the car" glitch. It reduces the height of the flight/jump. (If you play with original/low FPS you will experience big flying)

    Regarding car colors: there is one more "secret" NY cab color that you don't see in Take A Ride. Those differently colored cabs appear in "The Ali Situation/Problem" (and maybe in "Grand Central Station Switch", didn't test it there though) as roadblock cars in the second part if you get enough felony. They act as pursuers (obviously) and they are also stupidly squishy compared to their black sedan "friends", almost like that Superfly car that you drive in one mission in Miami.

      The game engine performs some calculations regarding the speed, angle and mass of the object hitbox. The car roof maybe could have some fixed values to repel other cars avoiding stacking they up.
      Just a theory...I am curious too.

    • @Bittboy
      @Bittboy 10 месяцев назад

      It's a bug in the physics code. Certain values are not clamped and do not take certain deltas into consideration, and _both_ cars will run the same calculations. This was fixed in Driver 2 and I was able to backport the code to the PC version, and sure enough it fixed the roof collision issues. Would love to go into more detail someday!

    • @natedunn3469
      @natedunn3469 10 месяцев назад +1

      I think it's that the hit box on the car is open up top and at the bottom, meaning that upon hitting the top or bottom of the car places you deep within the hit box thus causing the results of intense impact. That's my theory anyways 😆.

  • @FrenchRarity
    @FrenchRarity 10 месяцев назад +3

    I may have a little theory about why touching a sideways car's roof sends you flying...
    I think what happens here is that cars touching roofs are set to be pushed upwards. In normal circumstances, it would simply make your car bounce off of roofs.
    7:28 If you go frame by frame, the car touching the sideways roof seems to be building up vertical speed instead of getting launched instantly, almost like there's a gust of wind coming from bellow. You can see that happen everytime!
    That probably happens because touching it when it's sideways causes your car to remain in contact with the roof for longer, thus pushing you upwards way more often than intended. It added vertical speed for every frame that you were in contact with the roof and that's what sent you flying!
    ... But again, it's just a theory. This is probably all wrong for all I know, but it's fun to speculate I suppose.

    • @Bittboy
      @Bittboy 10 месяцев назад +1

      It has something to do with "levers" in the physics code. I experimented with backporting the physics from REDRIVER2 into the PC version, and the part of the code that does "lifting" is different and clamps more of the math, as well as using more information from the collision in calculations. I honestly can't remember exactly what fixes it, but it was definitely resolved in Driver 2 for sure.

    Me and my friends and family believed that the purple cars (in Miami) are police in disguise/police informants, every time we see one we either act cool or ram the fuck out of it, no idea how we came up with that conclusion (I guess we see one or two each time a chase sequence gets started) and I dk why I still think it's true, I guess this fact has been engraved in my mind since when I was a kid.

      Driver 1 and Driver 2 were among the best Driver games.
      And vehicle physics are still more realistic than new games today.

    • @MinecraftvsBurnout

      The graphics weren't even that bad.
      In 2004 there were just games with (naturally) better graphics.
      This game is from 1999 and is a Ps1 game.
