Yup me and my brother had the pc version windows 98 and Juno web browser!!! I only beat the “tutorial” cause I watched my older brother do it. But id always get stuck on the mission where you have to follow the train so did he tho(he’s 5 years older than me) think i was 6 or 7. I still have it for pc and got it working on our HP Envy and I’m on New York it I haven’t beat it yet!!! We were taking turns in take a ride running from the cops one day and I told him I bet you in driver 2 you’ll be able to get out of the car. Driver 2 came out a year later and gta3 came out 2 years later and changed everything!!! But I was so happy I called it!!! I predicted the future yall a little 6 year old boy knew gta was coming!!!
When I was young, my uncle installed this game on my grandma's crappy computer for all of the cousins to play when we visited her. We spent countless hours in this game, and it was a vivid part of our "going to grandma's" experience as kids. A great video like this is a trip down memory lane for sure - good work.
01:20 The reason you can drown is because originally the game was supposed to have open parts of the concrete wall where you could drive through, but in the final release, these were removed. These could be seen on early demos that were released, but for whatever reason the area that was made for the drowning feature remained.
Driver was my favorite PlayStation 1 game. Being born behind the Iron Curtain in the early eighties I watched many old american movies on pirated VHS tapes and always admired the old muscle cars, cruisers with fins from the '50s and of course the badass american trucks like Peterbilt, Kennworth, MAC etc. Sadly enough even after the fall of communism there was no videogame with open world driving until the first Driver came, but the wait was worth it!! Driver has it all - cool muscle cars and cop chases with squealing tires, ramming into each other sheet metal onto sheet metal, jumping down hills, driving through boxes, trash cans and glass. Everything is just like in the movies I used to watch and still do. What is crazy is that Driver has 4 cities and each has real landmarks and famous buildings which makes the atmosphere even better. Hell you can even drive over the Golden Gate bridge. The cutscenes in the game are also pretty good and especially the intro. The intro for Driver is my favorite intro of all times together with the Test Drive 5 intro. Lets not forget about the epic soundtrack...man, I still regularly listen to it. It really brought the 70s into the game for sure. The soundtrack for Driver and Tenchu: Stealth Assassin's are my two most favorite soundtracks even though we are all on PS5 now and so many games passed between now and then. Those old american movies and the first Driver are the reason why I now own a '72 Dodge Demon 340 and feel like the coolest guy ever when I cruise in it and burn the rubber a bit from time to time. These old muscle cars have so much charisma and a soul...before I even open the garage door, I get weak in the knees, I get goosebumps and my pulse goes faster. And when I turn on the old V8 engine, I feel like "This is it. Today, I am the DRIVER 😎." Wow, what an exceptional game!! Hopefully we get a new proper Driver game again one day, because the good old classic american car chase still has a lot to offer. If someone of you thinks about getting an old muscle car...do it, guys. The experience is worth every penny. The looks, the sound, the loose driving and the ever present raw and powerful feeling the car gives you is something beyond understanding until you're behind the steering wheel yourself. And don't forget: "Watch the paint, man!!" GLUG, GLUG, GLUG, GLUG, GLUG, VROOOOOOOM!!
Awesome! I loved the cop cars of Driver 1 and Driver 2 on Las Vegas, and used to made them on paper at an 3d angle, full of detail and color, and then cut it out, carrying them to school between my pencils, i was 10/11 yo. Thank you very much.
01:19 - I believe that the developers planned to make some locations with an accessible seaside (like they made it in Driver 2). I came to this idea when I noticed that the car is sinking almost everywhere around the Dodge Island. And in general, why was it necessary to make a drowning script, if it was not planned to use it?
Game from my childhood and it took so long to beat, because of the difficulty on some missions. Remember the director mode, where it was not completely able to record everything i wanted to do and the game seemed to do random stuff at playback instead.
Another one is that music is gone unless you play on some older system like Windows XP with original disk. And its different music to one from PS1 version of the game.
Very interesting! And hey, one thing that I have seen first hand is that if you're driving the old T-Bird or Ferrari with the speed cheat on, while 300mph is fast, hitting the Cruise Control button can actually boost you even MORE, up to 400 mph! Yes, I know it may sound crazy, but the Cruise Control, when going fast enough, actually serves as a secondary speed booster! That's right, if you accelerate in the fastest cars in the game, then later press and hold Cruise Control, you will hit 400 mph! I'm dead serious, you gotta try this out for yourself!
This brought back so many childhood memories, including that infamous parking garage. Dad brought this home for the PS1 one day and it became an instant favorite, even if my younger self spent more time smashing up the other cars on the road than actually driving around, especially with cheat codes. I also have a vivid memory of my dad somehow successfully running over a pedestrian that got caught on a bridge, which left behind a very primitive 2D sprite of gore and a corpse, but I'll chalk that one up to an overactive imagination at the time.
Pure nostalgia eh? I remember my father got me and my sister to a store that had pirate games dirty cheap, and bought us that game. We spent countless hours with my sister, just like you said "smashing other cars"... We were very young and didn't speak or understand English at that time. Memories, memories, memories.... Wish you the best buddy! Stay safe!
Watching this video gave me such a weird feeling, I haven't played this since I was 5 or 6 (some 20 years ago) and this game has such a surreal/liminal space vibe because of the ancient graphics. I played quite a bit of driver 2 but never gave this one much attention, imagine if they remade this for the current generation but kept it simar to the original.
1:28 this has happened to me many times and the way how the water works is really weird. Once i was able to get away from the water and i got the "You wrecked your vehicle" after it.
I played this on the PS1 and the game was notoriously bad throwing your car outside derivable space and into buildings and voids, if you struck a car on its side 😂
Here's another trick - you can get an even higher ridiculous top speed in the two fast cars by engaging cruise control after about 100mph - they go mental!
i used to love to put on the fast cars cheat and use one of those two fast cars as a kid, it was fun to try and turn them and jsut have them flip around and fly
One thing that is seldom-noticed in Driver is that the police cannot track you properly if you're driving alongside the road rather than on it - once you're a set distance away from them (a few car lengths)
@@Weylmes I've had it up as a video for many years now on "surviving survival mode", lol. Weirdly the timer actually slows down the longer the survival run goes, so in order to max out the timer at 99.59.59, you need to keep it running for a few hours.

I think there is a PC version of that game which was out not so long ago, ReDriver2 or something like that.

Curious to see behind the map construction and how the developers used the props to create fake scenary to make Miami bigger.
